Abstract

Abstract: Language is a mean of communication. To understand the language, we have to invent the meaning of words as many as possible either in a sentence or in whole texts. Vocabulary is one of the most important elements in a language, and teaching vocabulary is clearly more than presenting new words. Reading comprehension depends on several interrelated skills: understanding oral language, decoding the printed words, reading fluently, and using strategies to increase comprehension. Understanding reading material needs a specific reading strategy. The strategy should facilitate the comprehension of the students who want to read effectively. One of the techniques which can be used is Direct Method. The idea of this technique was that foreign language teaching must be carried out in the same way people learn their mother tongue

Therefore, the objective of this research was to find out whether or not it was effective to teach writing narrative paragraph by using Note-taking technique to the eighth grade students of the state Junior High school 33 of Palembang.  The method used in this research was pre-experimental method that is one group pre-test post-test method. The population of this research was all of the eighth grade students of the state Junior High school 33 of Palembang. The sample of this research consisted of 37 students. In this research there were two variables, they were independent variable and dependent variable. The independent variable of this research was note-taking and dependent variable was the students’ writing achievement. In collecting the data, the written test was giving twice; pre-test and post-test. The data were analyzed by using matched t-test.  Based on the result of the data analysis, the result of the research showed that the students’ average score in the pretest was 63.58 in which the lowest score was 50 attained by two students and the highest score was 70 reached by two students. Then the students’ average score in the posttest was 72.08 where the lowest score 60 achieved by one student and the highest score was 80 achieved by five students. By using the students’ score it was found that the result of the calculation of the matched t-test was 8.854, this score was higher than t-table that was 1.684 and the critical value at 5% of the significant level in one-tailed testing with df= 36. It means that null hyporesearch (Ho) was rejected and alternative hyporesearch (Ha) was accepted since the result of t-obtained was higher that t-table. In other words, the teaching writing narrative paragraph by using note-taking technique to the eighth grade students of the state Junior high School 33 of Palembang was effective.

Abstract

The researchers had found that learning reading are (1) investigating whether there was a significant difference of students’ reading comprehension achievement before and after being taught by using Guessing Meaning from Context strategy, (2) findingout in terms of strategies for Guessing Meaning from Context which strategies produced better achievement by the students. The researchers carried out quantitative study with one group Pre-test Post-test Design, involving one class as experimental class. The instrument in this research was reading test. The data analysis showed there was a significant difference on students’ reading comprehension achievement after being taught by using Guessing Meaning from Context strategy. Then, surrounding words, pictures, experience, and imagination as the strategiesincreased the most than the otherstrategies. Hypothesis test showed that the significance value (2- tailed) was 0.000 (p<0.05). It could be concluded that null-hypothesis was rejected. So, the result of the research inferred Guessing Meaning from Context to be able to improve the students’ reading comprehension in all aspects. Keywords: guessing meaning from context, improving, reading skill.

Abstract

This study used the experimental method with quasi experimental design, specifically, non-equivalent control group design. There were two groups, namely, experimental group in which it was given treatment by using PBL and control group in which it was given no treatment. For collecting the data, both groups were given speaking test and self-confidence questionnaire. For speaking, the data were collected using speaking test which was evaluated by two raters using analytic rubric consisting of five elements, namely accent, grammar, vocabulary, fluency and comprehension. Meanwhile, students’ self-confidence was evaluated using a ready-made-self-confidence questionnaire which measured (1) language use anxiety, (2) causal attribution, (3) perceived L2 competence, and (4) self-efficacy. Both data were analyzed by using t-test to see the difference in means (1) between pre- and post-test of students’ speaking achievements and of their self-confidence, and (2) of post-test of speaking achievements and of their self-confidence between the first and the second group. Regression analysis was also given to see the contribution of PBL to the variables in questions. The results showed that (1) there was a significant difference both in speaking achievement (t=8.828, p<.000) and self-confidence (t=7.968,p<.000) of the experimental group after being taught using PBL, (2) there was also a significant difference between experimental and control groups both in speaking ability (t=2.307, p<.027) and self-confidence (t=3.595, p<.001) , (3) the contribution of PBL to the students’ speaking achievement was 99.7%  and to self-confidence was 92.7%. In conclusion, PBL could be considered as an effective method in teaching speaking and in increasing students’ self-confidence.
