Abstract

This paper discusses the network-based language teaching in the State University of Surabaya. Network-based language teaching (NBLT) refers specifically to the pedagogical use of computers connected in either local or global networks, allowing one-to-one, one-to-many, and many-to-many communication. This research explores what happens when learners are brought together with texts, media, and other speakers of the language in computer-mediated contexts of interaction in English class.

Abstract

This study is aimed at finding out what students need in taking English as required course, what students want to learn, and how they want to learn. The data were taken from 500 questionnaires distributed to students. The data revealed that most of the students do have positive attitude in learning English, and because of this the students have more chances to take the best of their learning. However, as most of the students also take English because they are required to do so, there are also some factors that may discourage learners’ motivation in learning, i.e. materials selection, and teaching methods.

Abstract

English verbs have unique inflectional markers which show the past tense. There are two inflectional markers that become the categorization of these verbs. The first marker is the additional morpheme [d] or [ed]. All verbs with this marker are categorized as regular verbs. The second marker is the verb morphophonemic change like the word ‘sing’ [+present] and ‘sang’ [+past]. The verbs of this kind are categorized as irregular’ verbs. Simply, the regular verbs are those whose changes can be morphophonemically predicted while irregular verbs are the ones whose changes are morphophonemically unpredictable. This research is aimed to figure out whether there are morphophonemic inflectional patterns for irregular verbs. This paper is descriptive qualitative research. The data were collected using observation with note taking technique. I analyzed the data using distributional method. The result of the analysis shows that there are four additional sounds added to the ’regular’ verbs such as [d], [t], [ɪd], and [əd]. I also found that the morphophonemic changes in the irregular verbs are influenced by the syllable number, the positions, and the environments of the peak sounds. These findings prove that the term “irregular and regular” is not fully appropriate to classify the verbs.

Abstract

This paper is attempting to explore the plural markers in both Arabic and English. The data collected qualitatively are sorted to meet the scope of this paper. Through contrastive analysis, it is discovered that there are numerous significant differences rather than similarities in terms of syllable count start, patterns of plural nouns in relation to gender, regularity, regular vs irregular plural and internal vowel change. Moreover, Arabic has some uniqueness in its plural marking system. Being well informed on all of these might pave the way for second or foreign language learners to comprehensively understand the plural marking system in Arabic and English.

Abstract

I was interested in reviewing Susan Cain’s (2013) “Quiet: The Power of Introverts in a World That Can’t Stop Talking” for two reasons. First, as an introvert I wanted to learn more about myself. Second, I wanted to explore Cain and others’ criticism that group activities in the workplace and in education are unfair to introverts. This book review contains two parts. The first part elaborates the general concept of introversion, borrowing heavily from the impressive amount of research and practical experience presented in Cain (2013). The second part addresses the criticism that teachers who use Cooperative Learning (CL) are being unfair to their introvert students.

Abstract

An advertising always presents messages and invitations either in verbal or non-verbal form which represents a product and also reflects the benefits that is offered to the consumers at the same time. It also happens in atelevision advertisement of toothpaste that is quite popular in Indonesia, named Pepsodent. One of the interesting points in this advertisement is the language changes which occur in every decade (ten years) along with the development of Indonesian society. The data taken are diachronic data started in the 1980s until 2010s by choosing one advertisement for each decade which is considered popular enough in the society. This study analyzes four advertisements that represent four decades to prove that in performing its functions, an advertisement always pays attention to the development of a society as the dominant factor. The results of this study indicate that from sociopragmatics viewpoint, the language used in an advertisement, especially Pepsodent’s television advertisementchanges in the range of tenyears along with the development of the society. Those advertisements show the changes in the meaning and the differences in language selectionin each decade which is influenced by the development of the society.

Abstract

This  study  discusses  the  use  of  the  cooperative  principles  and  the conversational  implicatures  in  Nurfadli  Mursyid’s  Tahilalats  comic. Tahilalats is one comedy comic in Line Webtoon. The comic contains four panels in each episode, and its stories concern social phenomena. However, the readers said that Tahilalats comic was difficult to understand. This was the reason the writer conducted this study, which was an analysis of the use of the cooperative principle in Tahilalats comic. The study aimed at finding the  forms  of  conversational  implicature  and  describing  the  functions  of conversational  implicature  in  the  comic.  This  study  was  focused  on  30 episodes of the comic, and to collect the data the writer used simak and catat techniques  (Sudaryanto,  1993).  The  results  are  related  to  the  cooperative principle and the conversational implicature. The violation or compliance of the cooperative principles can describe the implicatures in the conversation. The uses of both produce humorous effects because these potentially lead the reader to misunderstand the comic when reading explicitly. However, reading the comic further, the reader will understand the implicit meanings.
