Abstract

Literary reception encompasses reader’s role in making meaning from literary texts. Student’s reception of teenage short story can give an idea of student’s acceptance of this type of text. This is interesting because students as teenagers are rarely involved in responding to teenage short stories, particularly ones available in newspapers. This research aims to examine the reception of teen short stories in the Kedaulatan Rakyat Newspaper by students of Madrasah Tsanawiyah in Bantul Regency in terms of intellectual and emotional aspects. Respondents in this study are 128 students of MTsN 1 Bantul, MTsN 3 Bantul, MTsN 4 Bantul, MTs Al Falah, and MTs Hasyim Asy'ari. The data were collected using a reception questionnaire focusing on intellectual and emotional aspects. The results of the study are as follows. First, in terms of intellectual aspect, the students’ reception of teen short stories in Kedaulatan Rakyat is high (70.82%), moderate (15.62%), and low (13.58%). Second, in terms of emotional aspect, the students’ reception of teen short stories in this newspaper is high (38.86%), moderate (20.28%), and low (40.86%). Fourth, there is no significant difference between the reception of students from state madrasah and private madrasah. Based on the results of this study, it can be concluded that students of class IX of Madrasah Tsanawiyah, Bantul Regency can understand well the elements of story builders and the structure of short story, language, themes, and conflicts in the short story. Students also understand the logic of the story in the text and feel the tension of the conflict. The new values in the short stories and actions of the main characters are quite acceptable to students. Students are also interested enough to discuss the short stories further. Meanwhile, most students felt less emotional impact and do not feel the tension presented in the short story.

Abstract

This paper seeks to discover the relationship between the development of ‘ilm al-ṣarf and of the Arabic lexicography. The analysis is made based on the entries of the Arabic dictionaries—which are the samples of this research. The dictionaries taken as the samples are those produced between the second century (first generation) and the twentieth century of Hijriya. The three concepts of ‘ilm al-ṣarf— tajrīd, i’lāl, and binā—are applied to analyse them. This article aims to trace and elucidate the development of the three concepts as they appear in the dictionaries. Based on the analysis, it is found that ilm al-ṣarf has evolved through time even though its basic principles had been applied from the first edition of the Arabic dictionaries.

Abstract

One of the specialized varieties of language which is known in human communication is the language of law. This variety of language can be found in some documents such as regulations, bills, and court’s decree. A decree uses special register whose existence is influenced by the context of situation, i.e. the field of discourse, the tenor, and the mode. These three dimensions of the context of situation in a decree released by the Supreme Court are the objects of this research. Conducting research on the context of situation of a text is important because by understanding the context we can understand the whole meaning of a text. The researcher used qualitative research methods to reveal the context of situation of the text of this legal language variety. The primary data are derived from the Supreme Court’s decree Number 210 K/Ag/ 2014, and they are analyzed using Systemic Functional Linguistics theory by Halliday and Eggins to answer the research problems. The research found that the context of the situation consisting of field, tenor and mode plays an important role in the realization of the text. These three dimensions are interrelated to build a discourse of a text.

Abstract

This research aims to describe and analyze the strategy used in translating Dīwān al-Imām al-Syāfi`ī. All analyzed data were taken from the translation of Dīwān al-Imām al-Syāfi`ī using dynamic equivalence technique. The method used in conducting this research is distributional review, starting from describing, filtering, classifying, and analyzing the data. Analysis process starts from choosing the translation strategy used in translating the text, then classify each data based on the strategy. After that, the classified data is being analyzed by stating which strategy category is used and what would probably be the reason for the translator to chose that specific strategy. The result shows that there are four translation strategies used by the translator in translating Dīwān al-Imām al-Syāfi`ī. Those translation strategies are replacing words order (taqdīm wa ta’khīr), loss (inqāṣ), gain (ziyādah), and substitution (tabdīl). For loss and gain strategies, there are another two categories which are avertable and inavertable. Based on the result of the analysis, the researcher then conclude that the main reason for the translator in choosing to use these strategies is the presence of linguistic and non-linguistic differences. Linguistic difference is indicated at patterns of sentence, uslūb and the dilālah between the two languages. As for the non-linguistic difference is related with cultural differences between the two languages.

Abstract

The collapse of most authoritarian rulers in the Arab world in particular and the Middle East in general, was automatically followed by a wider change in the direction of political policy and freedom of expression (hurriyyah al-ta'bīr), channeled through various social media. The freedom of expression does not always have positive implications but is accompanied by the growth of expressions of hatred. Hate speech or khitāb al-karāhiyah contri-butes to the social and political contestation of the Arab Arab World. The research questions in this study are as follow (1) what factors are behind the emergence of hate speech in the Arab world?(2) what is the form and type of hate speech that occurs in the Arab socio-political context? and (3) what is the meaning behind the hate speech? The primary research data were newspapers, journals, related books, and supporting data obtained online. These data were analyzed qualitatively based on the sequence of research formulation. The data analyzed with a socio-pragmatic approach combined with a discourse analysis approach that views language as a social symbol. The results of the study show that (1) hate speech in the context of the Arab World emerged from diverse contexts such as the clash among football supporters, Sunni vs. Shia, and the tensions among rebel groups and the rulers, and the peak of the hate speech occurred during the Arab Spring; (2) though hate speech may be expressed using neutral terms, it essentially refers to a particular discourse; (3) forms of hate speech are contained in the selection of words that are rude, dirty, and hateful; 4) forms of hate speech are expressed in the form of revolutionary slogans. These three forms of hate speech have a referential meaning towards the social facts that occur, namely in the form of the guiding of certain political discourses such as criticism of the Mubarak regime, hatred of certain social groups such as the IM, hatred of political figures, and incitement to commit criminal acts.

Abstract

Speaking is the most frequently used language competence for tourist guides. They use this competence in order to serve their guests optimally. This study aims to examine Arabic speaking competence of tourist guides in Puncak, West Java. This study uses a qualitative approach with various data collection techniques including participatory observation, indirect observation, and interviews with a number of key informants. The key informants in this research are tourist guides, tourist guide association committee, and tour operators in Puncak area. This study found that language acquisition methods affect the speaking competence of the tourist guide, which may increase over time depending on the intensity of interaction with tourists and language usage. These tourist guides show different levels of language proficiencies including grammar accuracy, different ability to avoid using slang, and involvement in various topics of conversation. Self-taught guides normally have limited abilities in almost all of the above indicators, while guides who studied Arabic either formally or semi-formally tend to be more competent although they cannot avoid using Arabic slang. Meanwhile, guides who learned Arabic from their interactions with native speakers tend to ignore grammar and language accuracy even though they are able to communicate effectively.
