Abstract

Advertisements in radio are heard by many people in promote services or products. The advertisements in the radio tend to mix the language from Indonesian to English. This study aimed to analyze the types and the functions of code mixing used in commercial and non-commercial advertisements of Guntur Radio FM Station Bali. This study was embedded research design. The research instruments used were smartphone, observation sheet, field note, transcription sheet, and classification sheet. The result of this study is shown that there were 8 types and 6 functions of code mixings in commercial advertisements. The types were insertion of word, insertion of phrase, involving changes of pronunciation, letter of the alphabet, insertion of clause, proper words, incomplete sentence, and short forms type. While, the functions were quotation, repetition, facility of expression, interjection, personalization and objectification, and qualifying message. In addition, there were 3 types and 3 functions of code mixings in non-commercial advertisements, and the types were insertion of word, insertion of clause, and incomplete sentence, while the functions were facility of expression, quotation, and phatic function.

Abstract

A question speech act is a communicative act that shows the intended language function, including questions, requests, apologies, suggestions, commands, and offers. This study aimed analyze the questions speech act types, question speech act social function, question speech act linguistics structure3 and questions speech act language elements produced by students in junior high school level. The study used descriptive qualitative. The subject of this study was seventh-grade students in junior high school. The data were collected through the elicitation technique. The analysis of this study included data collection, data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing. The analysis result showed that from 960 questions, the students more frequently write two types of questions: yes/no questions and wh questions, rather than rhetorical questions and tag questions. The social functions used were directive functions speech act includes asking and requesting. The structure of yes/no questions was used verb in the beginning sentence then followed by the subject. Meanwhile, the structure of wh question was used wh then followed by an auxiliary verb, subject, and main verb. The result showed that non-effective questions were higher than effective questions, there were grammatical errors found that make the questions not effective. The language element of the questions speech acts based on the semantics situation types. The result showed that states is higher than activity, accomplishment, semelfactive and achievement.

Abstract

The covid-19 pandemic has made the traditional learning system distance learning. Some research outside the Indonesian context states that distance learning has become commonplace, but it is different from Indonesia. So that the supporting factors faced by students in carrying out remote teaching are different, especially in the Indonesian context. Since remote teaching was implemented, there have been many obstacles experienced by teachers and students in following the learning process. This study aims to analyze students' perceptions regarding the supporting factors for the implementation of remote teaching. This study uses mixed methods (qualitative and quantitative) which aims to analyze more valid and accurate data results. The focus of this research is 142 eleventh grade students who have carried out remote teaching. In data collection, researchers conducted literature studies, interviews and questionnaires. The results of this study show that there are ten factors supporting the implementation of distance learning found in the matrix literature review and confirmed by the subject. The supporting factors found can be used as guidelines for the government, teachers and students in implementing the distance learning process in the future.

Abstract

Women in society experienced unequal treatment due to their genders which aroused women's actions to fight for opportunities. The ideology of feminism concerns the life struggles of women to encounter the patriarchal culture and reach gender equality. This study is aimed to analyze and compare the characterizations of Snow White based on feminists' perspective. The subject of this research is Snow White as the main character in two different versions. The study employed textual analysis and revealed that Snow White with positive femininity, such as beautiful, diligent, and expressive, and negative femininity, such as dependent. The data analysis will be presented in three parts, including the similarities, the differences, and the comparison of Snow White's characterizations based on feminists' perspectives. The research will follow the qualitative analysis consisting of data collection, data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing. However, in the story by Regis Maine, Snow White is described as more feminist than Vera Southgate's character. It can be concluded that Snow White in the story by Regis Maine is more feminist than Snow White in the story by Vera Southgate due to the masculine and feminine traits which could be used to encounter the patriarchal culture and reach gender equality.

Abstract

Remote teaching has emerged as an increasingly utilized learning strategy amidst the pandemic in order to mitigate the spread of the COVID-19 virus. Therefore this study aims to analyze the teachers’ roles and their challenges in the context of remote teaching. Moreover, the study was researched by using a qualitative method in which the data will be served descriptively. Specifically, observation and interview methods are used to collect data from two EFL teachers at the senior high school level. Data analysis consist of four process there are data collection, data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing and verification.The result of this study showed that the teachers implemented eight different roles in the context of remote teaching namely controller, organizer, assessor, prompter, participant, resource, tutor, and observer. Furthermore, in applying for these roles, the teachers also faced some challenges from different categories such as poor connection, low motivation of students, difficulty in sharing and in preparing the learning material, limited access to learning platforms, and difficulty in the assignment process.
