Journal of Educational Action Research is concerned with exploring the dialogue between research and practice in educational settings. This journal publishes accounts of a range of action research and related studies, in education and across the professions, with the aim of making their outcomes widely available and exemplifying the variety of possible styles of reporting. It aims to establish and maintain a review of the literature of action research. It also provides a forum for dialogue on the methodological and epistemological issues, enabling different approaches to be subjected to critical reflection and analysis.

Abstract

This study was aimed to improve the students’ writing competency in XI IPA-2 at SMA Negeri 1 Sukasada through the implementation of the Idea-Details strategy. The subjects of this study was class XI IPA 2. This study was conducted in form of Classroom Action Research. The data were collected through some instruments, namely writing competency test, questionnaire, and observation checklist. The result showed that the implementation of the Idea-Details strategy was success to improve the students’ writing competency in narrative and report text. The percentage of students who achieved score higher than or equal to 75 increased from 20% in preliminary observation to 85% in cycle 2. The cycle was stopped in cycle 2 since the percentage of the students who achieved the passing score were more than 75% regarded to performance indicator.

Abstract

This research aimed at improving students’ writing achievement for grade X in SMA Negeri 2 Singaraja through peer review and Facebook. In the planning step were carried out to create a Facebook group and make lesson plans. The results of the research showed as follows: First, there is a positive trend of the students’ mean score.  It increased from 64.9 in the pre test to 77.9 in the first cycle and to 88.7. Second, there were no students left behind in the second cycle. In pre test, there were 26 students who did not passed the passing grade of 72. In the first cycle, the number decreased to 4 and finally all students’ score had passed the passing grade after the second cycle. Third, the students’ response toward the implementation of the technique is positive. This means that the third indicator of research success had also been accomplished.

Abstract

The objective of this research was to improve students’ English speaking competency by using podcast in teaching and learning. The subject of the research was the speaking competency of the tenth grade students of SMA Negeri 1 Amlapura, i.e. X MIA 1 class. The method used in this study was Classroom Action Research (CAR), conducted in two cycles. There were two kinds of data collected, the qualitative data were obtained from the questionnaires and observation checklist. The quantitative data were collected by conducting pre-test and post-test. The result of study showed that the main score of the students’ English speaking competency gained on the pre-test was 60.43, on the post-test 1 was 72.46 and on post-test 2 was 79.78 and 83.33% of students could pass the standard minimum score. It can be concluded that the students’ English speaking competency could be improved by using podcast in English teaching and learning.

Abstract

This study aimed at improving speaking competency of the students using project-based learning. The subjects of this study were the eleventh grade AP1 students of SMK Negeri 4 Bangli which consisted 25 students. The study was conducted by following the action research procedures and it was completed in two cycles. The result of the study showed that speaking competency of the students could be improved by using project-based learning. The result of post-test 2 proved that the students’ mean score was 80 which significantly improved from the pre-test result that was 69. The class percentage of the students passing the test was 100% which was beyond the expectation which was 75%. Based on the questionnaire, the students also had positive response towards the implementation of project-based learning. The result showed that learning English using project-based learning could improve their speaking competency in terms of fluency, pronunciation, grammar, and vocabulary.

Abstract

This study aim at: (1) to find out whether Numbered Heads Together can improve students’ vocabulary mastery, (2) to find out the response of the students toward the implementation of the strategies. There were two kinds of data (qualitative and quantitative data) which were collected through tests, questionnaire, and writer’s diary. The students’ mean score was 4.63% in pretest, 6.2 in posttest 1, and improved became 7.97 in posttest 2. There were no students passed in the pretest, 2 students in the posttest 1, and 18 students in the posttest 2. The result of writer’s diary and questionnaire also showed that the students gave positive response toward the strategies. The results of the questionnaires showed that 18 (90%) of the students admitted that they really like the implementation of Numbered Heads Together. Moreover, 17 (85%) of the students admitted that they were motivated in learning English using Numbered Heads Together.

Abstract

This study aimed at improving the students’ achievement in reading comprehension by using Numbered Head Together Strategy (NHT). The subjects of the study were the students of II B class of English Eduation Department, Undiksha. The study was designed in the form of a classroom action research.Each cycle involved planning, action, observation, and reflection. The data were collected by using tests, diary, and questionnaires. The result of the data showed that the students’ achievement in reading comprehension improved along with the implementation of the NHT strategy. It was shown by the student’s mean score in the tests. In the pre-test the students’ mean score was 53.12 (sufficient). It increased up to 75.15 (very good) in post-test I and it increased to 85.50 (excellent) in post-test II. The result of the questionnaires also indicated that the students gave positive response toward the implementation of the NHT Strategy.
