Abstract

This study aimed at improving the students’ achievement in reading comprehension by using Numbered Head Together Strategy (NHT). The subjects of the study were the students of II B class of English Eduation Department, Undiksha. The study was designed in the form of a classroom action research.Each cycle involved planning, action, observation, and reflection. The data were collected by using tests, diary, and questionnaires. The result of the data showed that the students’ achievement in reading comprehension improved along with the implementation of the NHT strategy. It was shown by the student’s mean score in the tests. In the pre-test the students’ mean score was 53.12 (sufficient). It increased up to 75.15 (very good) in post-test I and it increased to 85.50 (excellent) in post-test II. The result of the questionnaires also indicated that the students gave positive response toward the implementation of the NHT Strategy.

Abstract

Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk menginvestigasi tipe-tipe dan sumber interlanguage yang dinuat oleh siswa-siswa kelas X di SMKN 1 Singaraja dalam menulis teks deskriptif. Keseluruhan data dianalisis menggunakan teori dari Azar dalam mengklasifikasikan tipe-tipe eror yang dibuat oleh siswa. Berdasarkan data dari analisis penelitian ini, terdapat 14 tipe eror yang dibuat oleh siswa yang termasuk: verb tense (16.61%), capitalization (14.70%), omit a word (11.50%), add a word (10.86%), singular-plural (8.31%), run-on sentence (6.39%), word choice, word order dan spelling (5.75%), punctuation (4.79%), word form (3.51%), article (2.56%), meaning not clear (1.92%), dan yang terakhir yaitu incomplete sentence (1.60%). Berkaitan dengan sumber-sumber eror, hasil dari penelitian ini mengindikasikan bahwa sumber terbesar dari eror adalah communication strategy (46.33%)Kata Kunci : teks deskriptif, interlanguage, tulisan This research aimed at investigating the types and sources of interlanguage committed by the students of class X in SMKN 1 Singaraja in writing descriptive text. All data were analyzed by using Azar’s theory in classifying the types of error committed by the students. Abstract

Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mendeskrisikan jenis kalimat dan strategi tindak tutur permintaan lokusi dan perlokusi dari tindak tutur permintaan (request acts) diantara siswa pelajar bahasa inggris sebagai bahasa asing. Penelitian ini menggunakan rancangan deskriptif kualitatif. Subjek penelitian ini adalah siswa Sekolah Menengah Atas di kelas bahasa Inggris sebagai bahasa asing. Data penelitian ini dikumpulkan dengan mengobservasi simulasi percakapan yang dilakukan siswa melalui bermain peran dengan lima situasi sosial yang berbeda. Data yang diperoleh dianalisis dideskripsikan dengan cara identifikasi, pengelompokan, dan kesimpulan. Hasil penelitian ini menunjukkan bahwa siswa lebih sering menggunakan kalimat pertanyaan untuk menyatakan permintaan daripada kalimat pernyataan dan perintah. Namun, siswa lebih sering menggunakan kalimat pernyataan untuk merespon permintaan. Strategi yang lebih dominan digunakan oleh siswa adalah query prepatory dan tidak ada satupun siswa menggunakan mild hint strategi dalam membuat kalimat permintaan. Selanjutnya, strategi tindak tutur permintaan perlokusi lebih didominasi oleh strategi penolakan, khususnya strategi penolakan tidak langsung. Penelitian ini dibatasi oleh simulasi percakapan melalui permainan peran yang mengacu pada lima situasi. Kata Kunci : tindak lokusi, tindak perlokusi, jenis kalimat, dan strategi This study was aimed at describing locutionary acts, perlocutionary acts ( sentence types/forms) and request strategies among the English as Foreign Language students. The research used a descriptive qualitative design. The subjects of this study were senior high school students in EFL class at Sekolah Menengah Atas Negeri 1 Kuta Utara.The data of this study were collected by observing simulated speech role play encounters under five different social situations.The collected data were analyzed descriptively through identifying and classifying locutionary acts, perlocutionary acts and request strategies and drawing a conclusion. The result of this study showed that the students more frequently used interrogative sentences than imperative and declarative sentences in performing a request act. On the other hand, they most frequently used declarative sentences in responding a request. The strategy that was dominantly used by the students was query preparatory and none of them used mild hint strategy in making the request. Finally, perlocutionary request act strategieswere dominated by refusal strategies, especially indirect strategy. This study was limited to the use of simulated role play encounters in five situations.keyword : locutionary acts, perlocutionary acts,sentences types (foms), and strategy.

Abstract

Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk 1) menyelidiki jenis tindak tutur yang digunakan oleh guru bahasa Inggris dalam proses belajar mengajar di SMA Negeri 2 Banjar. 2) Mengidentifikasi sebagian besar tindakan wicara yang digunakan oleh guru bahasa Inggris dalam proses belajar mengajar di SMA Negeri 2 Banjar 3) menemukan fungsi pedagogis dari tindakan berbicara yang digunakan oleh guru bahasa Inggris. Penelitian ini merupakan penelitian deskriptif dengan pendekatan kualitatif. Ada dua guru sebagai subyek penelitian ini. Data dikumpulkan berdasarkan instrumen seperti observasi penelitian, panduan wawancara, kamera video. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa, 1) Ada empat jenis tindak tutur yang ditemukan selama proses belajar mengajar. 2) Tindakan berbicara yang paling sering digunakan oleh guru adalah tindakan ucapan direktif yang terjadi saat para guru mencoba memberikan pertanyaan, meminta sesuatu, memberi perintah, menyela, mengundang, melarang, memberi saran dan mengingatkan. Jenis tindak tutur ini menyumbangkan sekitar 130 ujaran dengan presentase sekitar 62%. 3) Fungsi pedagogis yang disajikan oleh tindak tutur dibagi menjadi empat mode. Itu adalah arahan sebagai fungsi kontrol, commissives sebagai fungsi organisasi dan representatif dan ekspresif sebagai fungsi evaluatif dan fungsi motivasional. Kata Kunci : Kata Kunci: Tindak Tutur, ucapan guru This study aimed at 1) investigating kind of speech acts used by English teachers in teaching and learning process at SMA Negeri 2 Banjar. 2) Identifying the most speech act used by English teachers in teaching and learning process at SMA Negeri 2 Banjar 3) discovering the pedagogical functions of the speech act used by English teachers. This research was a descriptive study by using qualitative approach. There were two teachers as subjects for this research. The data were collected based on the instruments such as research observation sheet, interview guide, video camera. The results of the study show that, 1) there are four kinds of speech act which are found during the teaching and learning process. 2) The most frequent speech act used by the teachers is directive speech act that occurred when the teachers tried to give questions, request something, give command, interrupt, invite, prohibit, motivate give suggestion and remind. This kind of speech act presented utterances about 133 utterances with the percentage about 62%. 3) the pedagogical function served by speech act divided into four modes. Those are directives as a control function, commissives as organizational function and representative and expressive as evaluative function and motivational function. keyword : Key Words: Speech act, teachers’ utterances.

Abstract

The English teacher in Nusa Penida district, Klungkung regency almost applied teacher centered method in teaching and learning process. It was caused by the sources of learning was only from the teacher and book that was used in the class. It made teaching and learning process became monotone and bored. Reflected to that problem, IBM team build relationship with the group of English teacher of Junior High School in Nusa Penida in order to improve competency of the used of ICT as the tool used in teaching and learning activity.  The method that was used to train the English teacher was apprentice training by implementing cognitive apprenticeship model. This IBM had been conduted for 8 months and it resulted: (1) the competency of English teacher in operating ICT during teaching and learning proess in the class was improved, (2) the English teacher’s respond that used cognitive apprenticeship model during the training activity were positive. It could be seen from the Englisgh teachers’ enthusiasm during the training activity.Key words: ICT, model cognitive apprenticeship, English Teacher

Abstract

Penelitian ini ditujukan untuk menganalisis strategi terjemahan yang sering dan jarang digunakan dalam cerita pendek yang berjudul In Twilight Born oleh John. H. McGlynn. Penelitian ini termasuk dalam penelitian kualitatif dengan menggunakan checklist dan rubrik sebagai instrumen. Hasil dari penelitian ini menunjukkan translation by paraphrase using unrelated word sebagai strategi yang paling sering digunakan dan Translation using loan word or loan word plus explanation sebagai strategi yang paling jarang digunakan. Terdapat 11 kata yang termasuk strategi translation by paraphrase using unrelated word dan 4 kata termasuk strategi translation using a loan word or loan word plus explanation. Selain itu, kualitas terjemahan yang dimiliki dalam cerita pendek yaitu akurat, berterima, dan mudah dibaca. Dalam aspek keakuratan, ditemukan data sebanyak 254 kalimat yang termasuk sebagai terjemahan akurat, 47 kalimat termasuk terjemahan kurang akurat, dan 1 kalimat termasuk terjemahan tidak akurat. Dalam aspek keberterimaan, ditemukan sebanyak 272 kalimat yang termasuk sebagai terjemahan berterima, 30 kalimat termasuk terjemahan kurang berterima, dan 1 kalimat termasuk terjemahan tidak berterima. Dalam aspek keterbacaan, ditemukan sebanyak 279 kalimat yang termasuk sebagai terjemahan terbaca, 14 kalimat termasuk terjemahan kurang terbaca, dan 0 kalimat termasuk terjemahan tidak terbaca. Dengan demikian, penelitian ini bermanfaat untuk para penerjemah dapat memberikan hasil terjemahan yang lebih baik melalui penggunaan strategi dalam menerjemahkan teks dan meningkatkan kualitas terjemahan. Selanjutnya, peneliti lain diharapkan bisa menggunakan jenis strategi lain dan teks yang berbeda.Kata Kunci : terjemahan, strategi terjemahan, kualitas terjemahan, cerita pendek This study was aimed at analyzing translation strategies in the short story entitled In Twilight Born by John H. McGlynn. This study is qualitative research that used checklist and rubric as the instruments. It was found that translation by paraphrase using unrelated word as a strategy that mostly used and the translation using loan word or loan word plus explanation as a strategy that rarely used. There were 11 words in translation by paraphrase using unrelated word and 4 words in translation using a loan word or loan word plus explanation. Moreover, the quality of short story translation was accurate, acceptable, and readable. In accuracy aspect, there were 254 sentences categorized as an accurate translation, 47 sentences as less accurate translation, and 1 sentence as an inaccurate translation. In acceptable aspect, there were 272 sentences categorized as an acceptable translation, 30 sentences as less acceptable translation, and 1 sentence as an inacceptable translation. In readability aspect, there were 279 sentences categorized as a high readability, 14 sentences as a medium readability, and 0 sentence as a low readability. Thus, it is beneficial for other translators to conduct better translation result by applying the strategies and improving the quality of translation as well as it is as the reflection for the other researchers to apply other strategies and use other text sources.keyword : translation, translation strategy, quality of translation, short story

Abstract

Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui ada atau tidaknya perbedaan yang signifikan pada pemahaman membaca siswa kelas X di SMA N 1 Singaraja yang diajar melalui strategi mengajar timbal balik dan strategi konvensional. Desain penelitian ini adalah eksperimental semu dengan menggunakan desain kelompok kontrol post-test. Populasinya adalah siswa kelas X SMA N 1 Singaraja. Pengambilan sampel acak kluster digunakan untuk memilih sampel. Sampel penelitian ini adalah siswa X MIA3 dan X MIA2. Setiap kelas terdiri dari 32 siswa. Kelompok eksperimen diajarkan melalui strategi pengajaran timbal balik sementara kelompok kontrol diajarkan melalui strategi konvensional. Post-test dilakukan untuk mengumpulkan data. Data dianalisis secara deskriptif dan inferensial dengan menggunakan IMB SPSS Statistics 25. Hasilnya menunjukkan bahwa kelompok eksperimen memperoleh skor yang lebih baik daripada kelompok kontrol. Nilai rata-rata untuk kelompok eksperimen adalah 70,84 sementara kelompok kontrol memperoleh 65,93. Statistik inferensial dilakukan dengan melakukan uji-t. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa to > tcv (12.029 > 1.99897). Hal ini mengindikasikan bahwa terdapat perbedaan yang signifikan dari penerapan Strategi Pengajaran Reciprocal pada pemahaman membaca siswa kelas sepuluh di SMA N 1 Singaraja diterima. Ukuran efek dari penelitian ini adalah 0,50725. Itu diklasifikasikan ke dalam efek sedang.Kata Kunci : Eksperimen, Pemahaman Membaca, Strategi Mengajar Timbal-Balik This study aimed at determining whether or not there was a significant difference on tenth grade students’ reading comprehension in SMA N 1 Singaraja who were taught by using reciprocal teaching strategy and conventional strategy. The design of this study was quasi-experimental design utilizing post-test only control group design. The population was tenth grade students of SMA N 1 Singaraja. Cluster random sampling was used to select the sample. The samples of this study were X MIA3 and X MIA2 students. Each class consisted of 32 students. The experimental group was taught by using reciprocal teaching strategy meanwhile control group was taught by using conventional strategy. Post-test was conducted to collect the data. The data was analyzed descriptively and inferentially by using IMB SPSS Statistics 25. The result showed that experimental group obtained better score than control group. The mean score for experimental group was 70.84 while control group obtained 65.93. Inferential statistics was done by conducting t-test. The result showed that to > tcv (2.029 > 1.99897). It indicated that stated there is a significant different of the implementation of Reciprocal Teaching Strategy on tenth grade students’ reading comprehension in SMA N 1 Singaraja was accepted. Abstract

Tujuan dari penelitian ini adalah untuk menemukan tipe-tipe dari strategi komunikasi yang digunakan oleh staf pelayanan informasi di Jatiluwih Rice Terrace, tipe dari strategi komunikasi yang paling banyak digunakan oleh staf, dan alasan dari strategi komunikasi yang digunakan oleh staf. Penelitian ini menggunakan qualitative design. Metode yang digunakan untuk mengumpulkan data adalah observasi dan wawancara. Hasil dari penelitian ini menunjukan bahwa ada delapan tipe strategi komunikasi yang digunakan oleh staf pelayanan informasi di Jatiluwih Rice Terrace, yaitu; Message Abandonment (17%), Circumlocution (1%), Non-linguistic Signal (18%), Literal Translation (6%), Foreign zing (11%), Appeal for help (10%), Stalling or Time Gaining (18%), Comprehension check (11%), and Clarification request (8%). Time gaining dan Non Linguistic signal merupakan tipe strategi komunikasi yang paling banyak digunakan oleh staf. Ada dua alasan utama dari strategi komunikasi yang digunakan oleh staf, yaitu; (1 untuk menghindari kesulitan bahasa yang akan dihadapi oleh staf agar membuat pengunjung lebih mudah untuk memahami dan tidak bingung tentang ucapan dan (2) untuk membuat komunikasi lebih efisien dan menyediakan waktu untuk berpikir.Kata Kunci : strategi komunikasi, layanan informasi, jatiluwih rice terrace The purpose of the study was to find out the types of communication strategies used by the Information Center Staff at Jatiluwih Rice Terrace, the type of communication strategies mostly used by the staff, and the reasons of communication strategies used by the staff. The subject of this study was the Information Center staff at Jatiluwih Rice Terrace. This study employed qualitative design. The methods of data collection were observation and interview. The findings of study showed that there were nine types of communication strategies applied by Tourist Information Center staff at Jatiluwih Rice Terrace, namely; Message Abandonment (17%), Circumlocution (1%), Non-linguistic Signal (18%), Literal Translation (6%), Foreign zing (11%), Appeal for help (10%), Stalling or Time Gaining (18%), Comprehension check (11%), and Clarification request (8%) Time gaining and Non Linguistic signal were the communication strategies that were mostly used by the staff. Abstract

One of the ideal purposes of communication is giving information, but sometimes information is delivered in certain condition to make another intention. The violation of such ideals then occurred based on one?s reason and can be observed by looking at the available context. Of all the reasons behind maxim violation, politeness is one of them. It is an essential part of communication which could maintain a good relationship between both speaker and hearer. Teacher is one of the essential parts in education sector. In teaching and learning process, teacher sometimes violate the maxim to imply a more encouraging yet polite responses. In this study, the writer had combined two variables of pragmatics study which occurred in the ground of educational sector. In this study, the writer had combined two variables of pragmatics study which occurred in the ground of educational sector. The writer then tried to define the way on how Mrs. AS, one of the English teachers in SMPN 3 Singaraja violates the maxim and also its relation with politeness. Videos of teaching and learning process had been taken and transcribed to provide an authentic data. The result of the data shows that 229 utterances had violated maxim while achieving politeness at the same time. Abstract

      Generally, this research was aimed at improving students’ reading comprehension by applying MALL-based learning strategy through Quizizz application in literal reading class. Subjects of the research were the second semester students of G class at Undiksha Singaraja who took literal reading subject. The research used classroom action research method which was done in two cycles. The data were collected by giving reading comprehension test to measure the student’s reading comprehension; observing the teaching learning process and giving questionnaire for collecting the data of student’s perception toward the implementation of MALL-based learning strategy. The results showed that the score of students’ reading comprehensions test improved significantly at the end of each cycle. Beside that, the students have positive and good perceptions toward the implementation of MALL-based learning strategy. In short, the students’ reading comprehension in II D class could be improved by applying MALL-based learning strategy through Quizizz application. Keywords: MALL strategy, Quizizz application, reading comprehensionABSTRAK Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui ada tidaknya peningkatan kemampuan membaca mahasiswa dalam memahami isi bacaan dan respon mahasiswa terhadap penerapan strategi MALL dalam proses pemebelajaran literal reading. Untuk mengimplementasikan strategi MALL, peneliti menggunakan jenis penelitian tindakan kelas. Di dalam penelitian tindakan kelas ini, data dikumpulkan melalui pengamatan, tes, dan kuisioner. Pengumpulan data dengan teknik tes dilakukan untuk mengetahui tingkat  pemahaman membaca yang kemudian dianalisis secara kuantitatif untuk memperoleh skor rata-rata mahasiswa. Sementara itu, pengamatan dilakukan untuk mengumpulkan data berupa kondisi proses pembelajaran literal reading di dalam kelas. Sedangkan kuisioner diberikan untuk mengetahui respon atau tanggapan mahasiswa terhadap pelaksanaan tindakan. Pelaksanaan tindakan pada penelitian ini dilakukan dalam dua siklus, yang masing-masing siklus terdiri dari tiga kali pertemuan. Berdasarkian hasil pengamatan pada masing-masing siklus disimpulkan bahwa penerapan strategi mampu meningkatkan proses pembelajaran literal reading pada mahasiswa semester II kelas D prodi Pendidikan Bahasa Inggris. Hal lain dapat dilihat sebagai indikator perbaikan proses pembelajaran literal reading yaitu terjadi peningkatan pada keberanian mahasiswa untuk mengungkapkan gagasan mengenai teks bacaan yang dihadapinya. Peningkatan skor pemahaman membaca mahasiswa terjadi pada setiap akhir siklus.Kata kunci: Strategi MALL, Aplikasi Quizizz, Pemahaman Membaca
