Abstract

A search for a philosophy of leadership has to begin with ontological and epistemological questions. The former deals with what leadership is and the latter is concerned with how one can know. Hence, this work engages in exploring the meaning, scope, and nature of leadership through the methods of analysing common words and metaphors of leadership in the Old Testament, particularly the Book of Deuteronomy. In addition, the research perspectives on the nature of leadership in the area of leadership studies are discussed to arrive at a more comprehensive understanding of the characteristics and functions of leadership. This article deals with the ethical values that lay the foundation for the leadership practices in Deuteronomy. In doing so, sources of moral courage will be discussed first, as people’s personal and corporate moral courage has to originate from certain concepts, which serve as a philosophical underpinning, driving leaders in the ethical directions of leadership practices. Next, leadership with a concern for people and ethics is discussed. The crux of the philosophy of Deuteronomy is that people should choose life by obeying the law of the Lord and avoid destruction that results from disobeying the law. Hence, leadership practices are there to create life or well-being for the people. Finally, there will be a study on how ethical practices shape society, with reference to Israelite society in the context of the narratives in the Book of Deuteronomy.

Abstract

Children are a group of people who often experience trauma, which then leads to a cycle of cycle. Various psychological help has been sought but has not addressed spiritual recovery. This study discusses forgiveness in the process of children who are in crisis so that spiritual development occurs in children. The author uses various library sources and analyzes the biblical text in discussing the topic. This study uses hermeneutical approaches to promoting biblical texts as applicable to everyday life. Forgiveness plays an essential role in the recovery process. Children need help identifying what they are grateful for regarding the forgiveness process. Gratitude produces liberation and leads to hope, thus leading to change thatresults in spiritual healing. To help children forgive, children need reconciliation with the creator. To meet this need, spiritual directors play an important role in assisting children to meet their spiritual needs. Spiritual directors can help traumatized children replace their distorted view of themselves, others, and God with a proper view of the truth. This study aims to involve the contribution of existing practical theology to propose the idea of the role of forgiveness in the grieving process for children experiencing a crisis.

Abstract

Christlikeness is the essence of the Christian life. Efforts to build spirituality in the era of technological progress have been widely analyzed, including for the millennial generation but are more at the level of phenomena. In general, the millennial generation is understood as those who were born in the range of 1987-2001. The contemporary lie in the world today is full of massive technological influence that changes human social life and even human spiritual life, especially creating the millennial generation. This article aims to demonstrate that attempts to build spirituality for the millennial generation in accordance with their characteristic must be based on and simultaneously aimed at being in the Christlikeness. This article will employ the literature method from books and journal articles. Specifically, most of the journal articles will cover the research within the last 10 years. There are three stages of analysis carried out, namely:  first, conducting a study on the characteristics of the millennial generation specifically in Indonesia, second, demonstrating the essence of spirituality which is Christlikeness by examining Luke 9:23, and thirdly efforts to build a spirituality that is relevant to the Christian millennial generation in Indonesia. Conclusions are the final part of this article. The implication of this research both theoretically and practically is addressed to the church, the parents, and Christian educators who deal with the millennials. There is an urgency for to understand the characteristics of the millennials that they can build their spirituality. Furthermore, all who deal with the millennials must provide a relevant context for the millennials such as technology, their spirit of freedom, the attachment to the family. The essence of spirituality which is Christlikeness must be delivered through all these characteristics.

Abstract

This paper examines the perception of transparency among the Church Councils with an ethical-theological analysis and an analysis of financial accountability. The background of the problem is that there are different perceptions among the congregations regarding church financial accountability. These differences reflect differences in theological ethical content. The data collection method used is a mix-method, which uses quantitative tools by distributing questionnaires and in-depth interviews with several church assemblies. The final number of respondents is 167 church assemblies from two church groups, namely the Indonesian Christian Church of the Central Java Regional Synod (Gereja Kristen Indonesia Sinode Wilayah Jateng/GKI SW Jateng) Region of Solo and the Javanese Christian Churches (Gereja-gereja Kristen Jawa/GKJ) Region of North Yogyakarta. The result is a moral obligation is proven to have a significant effect on transparency and intention to disclose financial information to the congregation. This moral obligation to make church finances transparent is based on the church community or congregation members. The ethical drive mainly comes from the community. Theologically, this result on the one hand confirms the existence of the church as a community of faith that drives the formation of values. On the other hand, it presents an opportunity for the church to make a program that formed a personal value of transparency in the Church Council. The research contribution is to the development of the Church Council's guidance on financial accountability and the development of theological ethical values.

Abstract

In a number of ways, the epistle to the Hebrews is a unique letter among the New Testament epistles because of its Jewish nuance and emphasis on the Mosaic Covenant. The author quotes and alludes to Old Testament texts in a variety of ways, which has aroused great interest for many theologians. The theological themes of the letter have also resulted in much study, particularly when one attempts to apply these unique themes to the present-day church. This study focuses on six of these themes (God, Christ, Priest, Covenant, Endurance, and Faith) and their significance for the current church contexts. A text analysis research method is employed to exegete various texts. In accordance with many other studies on the subject, this study also concludes that the epistle to the Hebrews is profoundly Christocentric. Christ is the primary focus in all the letter’s emphases. The writer of Hebrews seeks to explain the superiority of the New Covenant, and how the Old Testament was ultimately focused on and fulfilment through Christ.

Qualitative method was utilized by the researchers, who interviewed the pastor, church committee members, and many members of the congregation. Data triangulation was used to obtain pertinent information from interview transcripts, and the results were then presented in a descriptive manner. Based on the collected data, these roles—which the pastor does in his capacity as a spiritual leader—were recognized as being essential to achieving church autonomy in GKII Gracia Sintang: 1) enlistment of the congregation in spiritual ministry to involve them according to their own abilities and potential, 2) optimization of external opportunities and utilization of internal potential to achieve good results, 3) mobilization of the congregation through encouraging and galvanizing them to participate in church ministry. In order to support these roles, particularly mobilization, training, pastoral visitation, and sermon delivery aimed at awakening the congregation to the importance of their participation were carried out.

Abstract

Parents must nurture their children from their earliest days to know God personally. However, some parents sometimes do not realize this and neglect their responsibility. Thus, this study explores how parents and the church should develop a mutual partnership in children’s spiritual education. The author used a qualitative method with a literature approach to investigate the problem and propose suggestions. The conclusion was that the parent is the primary responsible party in educating children. But, they can not do this task independently without the church's help. Since relying on Sunday School as part of the church’s responsibility for teaching children alone is not enough, the church could help them by providing training that educates parents to do their parental responsibilities. And to ensure that the education at home will overlap with church teaching, Sunday School teachers and parents as partners should develop mutual respect and communication. If everyone involved in children's ministry, directly or indirectly, could cultivate this joint responsibility, it would help children grow in fear of God and be better people. As the future generation, improving the quality of our ministry for children will eventually create a better church, now and later.
