Abstract

Background: The number of elderly populations is increasing each year. As the number of elderly populations increases, the risk of non-communicable diseases, such as hypertension, diabetes, stroke, will also increase. The main risk factors for this disease include unhealthy diet, inadequate physical activity, smoking, inadequate rest, frequent stress and etc., which are considered as individual's lifestyle. This lifestyle starts when the individual grows up. Therefore, health interventions must be carried out since the individual turns to adulthood in order to prepare themselves for healthy ageing.Purpose: This study aimed to review the conceptual framework necessary to develop public health programs in preparation for healthy aging.Discussion: In the preparation for healthy ageing, health interventions should be conducted by targeting the adult population. The health interventions should be based on the theory of behavior change, life-course approach, and ecological approach. In addition, with the advancement of technology, the health interventions can also be carried out by involving digital intervention. The contextual elements, such as social, cultural and psychological context are also important in implementing the program so that it can be accepted by the targeted community.Conclusion: There is no intervention that fits all levels of society. Therefore, the interventions must be developed specifically for the population according to the local context.

Abstract

Background: According to the World Health Organization, healthy aging is the process of developing and maintaining functional abilities that make the elderly happy. The increase in the elderly population requires more attention. In particular, health services at the primary health care level face problems related to the limited capacity of overall health services, especially in terms of health promotion and preventive health issues. It is necessary to improve the quality of health care services for the elderly to prevent greater health problems among the elderly population.Objectives: Understand the need to provide holistic health services for healthy aging and use their capabilities, and strengthen cooperation among health professionals in achieving healthy aging.Discusion: Primary health care is pointed out that primary health care should provide comprehensive services in a holistic manner to support a healthy aging process. Therefore, a well-structured, integrated, and cross-industry collaborative primary care system is needed. The system should include changes in professional behavior, coordination of care, and participation of patients' families and communities in comprehensive health care. This can be achieved through inter-professional education, continuous training and education of primary health care professionals, as well as primary health care services and cross-level health care technology innovation.Conclusions: Healthy aging is not just the absence of disease. Everyone in health and social care at all levels can play a role to help improve healthy aging. To make the elderly healthy, starting from the prevention of young health problems, it requires collaboration between health workers, primary health care and other health service levels, and health care that cooperates with patients, families, and communities.Keywords: healthy aging, primary care, preventive, health worker

Abstract

Background. Indonesia has become the country with the highest elderly population in Southeast Asia which around 27 million people within 2020. Demographic bonus, where the productive age is higher than the non-productive age, should be optimized so that it becomes an opportunity to decrease the dependency ratio of the elderly over 65 years. However, increasing life expectancy has other implications which as the increase in health problems associated with the aging process, including the emergence of degenerative diseases. The concept of healthy aging formed due to the increase of public awareness to live within quality life and maintaining a healthy lifestyle through physical activity and good nutrition. Healthy aging is the process of developing and maintaining the functional ability that enables wellbeing in older age. Lifestyle improvement from the early stage will have a better effect on a person's lifelong health. Unfortunately, it is not widely known by the public, so awareness is not yet evident and benefits cannot be obtained optimally.Objectives. Healthy aging is the process of developing and maintaining the functional ability that enables wellbeing in older age. The aim of this review is to raise awareness among the adult age group about the important role of physical activity and nutrition in achieving a healthy aging condition.Discussion. American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM) and Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommend adults aged 18–65 year to participate in moderate-intensity aerobic physical activity for a minimum of 30 minutes on five days per week, or vigorous-intensity aerobic activity for a minimum of 20 minutes on three days per week. Moreover, recent WHO (2020) guideline towards physical activity and sedentary behavior recommend all adults to have moderate-intensity for 150 – 300 min or vigorous-intensity for 75 – 150 min per week. But this recommendation has not been able to reduce physical inactivity number in Indonesian society, especially adult and senior adult. There are some nutrition elements related to mobility health, mainly are protein, vitamin D, calcium, antioxidant and omega-3, and many studies report that Indonesian adults suffer deficiencies on these nutrition elements and cause health problems related to mobility. Health interventions should involved many stakeholders, e.g government, private sectors, NGO, mass media, and many more.Conclusions: The concept of healthy aging and interventions related to this need to be recognized and implemented as early as possible to get optimal results, and preferably starting from adulthood. Health interventions carried out must be holistic and synergize between physical activity, nutrition, mental health and other factors that play a role. A community-based approach is the easiest and fastest way to change mindsets and behavior patterns, and can be implemented in the work environment or other communities.

Abstract

Background: The rapid ageing population among older adults from 2020 to 2040 has led to an emerging focus as this group begins to experience ageing and has a higher risk of having chronic illness of non-communicable diseases. Therefore, it is important to provide General Practitioners (GPs) with adequate knowledge and attitude of healthy ageing to ensure the quality of health service among older adults.Objectives: To identify the perspective of general practitioners including the knowledge, attitude and practice towards adult health and nutrition to support healthy ageing in Indonesia.Methods: An online survey was conducted among 100 general practitioners registered at the Indonesian Medical Council (KKI) and domiciled in the Greater Jakarta area and outside the Jabodetabek area. The sample recruitment process was carried out using the Alomedika online application. All data were analyzed using SPSS software.Results: Almost all (92%) of respondents who took this survey had a supportive attitude in providing additional nutrition to adults to support healthy ageing. About 76% of the respondents did so by recommending milk. However, in terms of knowledge, around 67% of the respondents showed inadequate results, especially about physiological changes that occurred in adults. There is no statistically significant difference between respondents’ demographic characteristics and all perspectives measured in this study (i.e., knowledge, attitude and practice)Conclusions: The study indicates that it is important to educate general practitioners about the healthy aging process in order to maintain general practitioners' attitudes and behavior in health services to support the success of achieving healthy aging in Indonesia.

Abstract

Background: Including Indonesia, the elderly population worldwide is on the rise. This situation is closely related to the increase in the incidence and prevalence of non-communicable diseases. Eating behavior is related to the risk of non- communicable the risk of NCDs in the elderly. Therefore, nutrition intervention should be carried out from old age.Objectives: The purpose of this study is to review potential nutritional interventions to prepare for a healthy ageing process in an Indonesian context.Discusion: This review uses social cognition theory to emphasize the importance of nutrition education, the development of nutritional products with biologically active compounds, and practical guidelines that influence individual dietary behavior. Nutritional interventions should take into account Indonesia’s existing food-based balanced nutrition diet guidelines and the dietary patterns of adults and the elderly. Indonesia has a large population, ethnic and cultural diversity, which together affect people’s daily consumption of various foods.Conclusions: Customized nutrition education programs and the development of functional foods are appropriate interventions that can be implemented in Indonesia.
