Two decades or more, in the global scheme, Islamic studies have been enforced to take broader paradigms from dogmatic-theology to popular-religious. Islamic studies is not merely discussing on sacred corpus only, but everyday life of Islam also. In academic space, this field has increasingly been an intersection -if not a contestation- across disciplines, such as political science, anthropology, sociology, history, economics, media, and cultural studies.

Abstract

This study considers a question of whether blessings are commodified in the ritual practices of religious therapy associated with the certain religious figures. Buying the Air Berkah (Holy Water) from Habib Hasan Al Muhdor, a religios leader of Majelis Shalawat Ahbabul Musthofa, is a continuous tradition practiced by local Muslims at Widoro  Krejengan Probolinggo. By observing this religious (or economic?) therapy, this study attempts to argue that they have been transmitting the material thing, money, into the blessing of the attendant spirit mediums. As they received blessing and magical item from the medium air berkah, they reached for wallets to make donation. This study goes to analyze the ways their stock of knowledge are constructed through ritualized practices of buying air berkah and the ways it reproduced the social structure of Krejengan community associated with their religious belief in the commodified item of blessing. It leads this study to conclusion that religion of the masses requires holy men to satisfy the needs of ordinary men and women, and hence the sacred and charisma are corrupted by the demand for miracles and spectacles through certain mechanism, including religious therapy.

Abstract

Important lines of issues on which this study is based to reveal the religious phenomena of Kirab Pusaka. The first is that Kirab Pusaka is a mysterium reality in the sense of that it has represented the certain rituals held by the Solo Palace as the center of people. For this purpose, this study will examine how Kirab Pusaka could be the sacred, and how the Solo Palace is spiritually regarded as the center of the sacred. The second is about construction of Kirab Pusaka as the sacred especially for Solo people. It is important to not only study this event by taking a distance between the researcher and the object of the research, but also to directly experience it as the involded person. The researcher will have important role to manifest his experiences during interview with some people and observation in the field. Keywords: Kirab Pusaka, Mysterium Reality, and The Sacred.

Abstract

This study is to figure out the possibility of pesantren in designing a local wisdom based logics of education. It is a starting hypothesis that needs more analysis, theory, and discussion. Today’s globalisation often makes pesantren into a streotypical ‘scary’ position among society, then it needs an escalation from trom self-developmental educational system into a logics of education which is based on tolerances and local wisdom. This effort is possible to do with habituation of local wisdom based logics of education to santri. The possible solution is getting started with the simplest thing instead of underestimating the dominant globalisation and traditional nature of pesantren.

Responding to this phenomenon, moderate Islam is required to take part in addressing puritanical Islam. Some of the offers presented were defensive jihad, being aggressive and also loudly voicing peace.
