Abstract

Many people hold a negative perception of the exiting tarekat (path for mystics to follow especially Sufism). This attitude is the result of the exclusiveness of the tarekat‘s programs. One of the exclusive programs is the asbal activity in the tarekat of Naqsyabandiyah Muzhariyah in Pontianak. Besides, in the asbal activity rebana (tambourine) is used to accompany praise to Rasulullah (messenger of God) which allows of many interpretations among the society. However, it can be explained that the exclusiveness of the asbal activity is aimed at avoiding suspicion in conducting tarekat which may result in bid‘ah and the practice of tarekat without bai‘at. The asbal activity also contain aspects of collective guidance which will further be elaborated in this writing.

Abstract

Al-Jabiri denominated his interpretation project of the Arabic tradition as the Arabic reasoning critique (naqd al-aql al-arabi). The project began from his concern over the present reality of the Arab and Islamic world which arguably is still underdeveloped and his desire to present a new thought methodology as a tool to get out of the slump and awaken to the preferred reality. Al-Jabiri differentiated two traditions, one that refers to the tadwin of Islam as part of Islamic-Arabic tradition and the other referring to and departing from the European Renaissance (modernity). The gap between "what was there" (the traditions of our past) and "what is here" (Western civilization) is growing wide and steep. This condition, according to him, made most of us miss the romanticism of our past, but at the same time there is a desire to break away with that tradition. This is the condition that has spawned "a Split Consciousness" of the Arab society, torn between subjective and objective factors, between the ideological burdens and the objective historical reality which is increasingly far from the ideal progress of modern civilization. In the context of modern-contemporary Arab thought, the tendency of literal-textualist thought, (read: tendency of traditionalism) can in fact be referred — though partly —to the framework bayani reasoning system, as well as other trends in favor of modernity based on burhani reasoning system as something that comes from the outside, that goes through the translation process in the tadwin period. The attraction between the two tendencies of tradition and modernity, according to Al-Jabiri, should be used as the realization of a new tadwin moment, with the new size, standard, and enlightenment, on a single principle: "modernization" (reform of thought, tahdits) requires the fulfillment of the prerequisites of "traditionalization" (back to tradition), and similarly "traditionalization" requires the fulfillment process of "modernization."

Abstract

Right wing and left wing are the terms used by many people in judging the emergence of two giant paradigms: Islam and Marxism. Right wing describes the appearance of Islam, while left wing is attributed to the concept and application of Marxism. Substantially, “right” has the nation of good, positive characters, obedience, and decency. On the contrary, “left” portrays the symbols of bad, negative characters, disobedience, threat, and immorality. Although the interpreta-tion of the meaning of right and left is solely based on the root of human language culture, people have historically accepted right and left as good and bad. However, as this paper point out, Islam has yet to represent the paradigm and the right wing movement nor does Marxism represent the left wing since there good thing and truth in Marx‟s ideas.

Abstract

Once the tendency of mysticism was characterized by isolated spiritualism which separated its followers from the society. No wonder, many ulemas rejected this kind of Sufism. In the turbulence of modern human life, Sufism has become an alternative to consider since modernism (viewed fromcertain aspects) has failed to créate a more meaningful life for humans. However, nota ll the tendencies in the movement of Islamic spirituals can instantly overcome the meaninglessness of a society. The writed argues that the kind of Sufism that can answer this challenge is the one that is concerned with the problems of invironment, social ethics, and the future of humanity, which relies on the power of emperical knowledge and spiritual awareness that is mystical in nature. This kind of Sufism is what Fazlur Rahman referred to as neo-Sufism.
