Abstract

Wound healing is a series of biophysiological processes, beginning with tissue injury, and ending with repairs from the wound tissue itself to a complete state consisting of several phases including inflammation, proliferation and remodeling. Every process of wound healing always leaves a scar. Hypertrophic and keloid is a product of abnormal wound healing. This abnormal scar formation is influenced by several factors, one of which is the wound stress. A tension that is too large in a wound will cause a hypoxic state in the wound itself. This hypoxic state will cause recurrent inflammation which leads to abnormal scar formation. One of abnormal scars formation prevention is reduction in wound tension. Reduction in wound tension reduce the inflammation process.

Abstract

Introduction: A cataract is an opacity of the lens, caused by many factors. Rapid Assessment of Avoidable Blindness (RAAB) that has been conducted in three provinces (NTB, Jawa Barat, dan Sulawesi Selatan) in 2013-2014 has come into a prediction of new cases of cataract blindness will increase 0.1% from the population or about 250.000 people a year. Metabolic disease such as Diabetes Mellitus (DM) is one of the well-known factors of cataract. Many studies, including Blue Mountains Eye Study and Beaver Dam Eye Study, have proved the increase of incidence and prevalence of posterior subcapsular cataract on diabetic patients. Posterior subcapsular cataract (PSC) means the lens opacity starts from the posterior part of the lens. Aim: to study whether there is a correlation between DM and PSC in Surabaya or not. Method: This research used the observational study with analytic design, and the method used in this research is cross-sectional. Spearman correlation was used in this research to test the correlation between variables. Result: The population of this study is all pre-surgery senile cataract patients on PHC Hospital Surabaya. Twenty-two samples meet the inclusion and exclusion criteria. The analytic result shows that the correlation between diabetes and the posterior subcapsular senile cataract is insignificant (p= -0.092). Conclusion: The exact pathogenesis of PSC remains unknown. It shows increased degenerative changes and the accumulation of extracellular material which can happen on diabetes patients. However, it has been noted to occur as a result of a gene mutation. That explained the insignificancy result of this research and the different distribution of PSC in the world. Descriptive research about cataract types epidemiology in Indonesia is needed.

Abstract

Background: Pseudomonas aeruginosa is an opportunistic pathogen which can cause infection in every part of the human body lacking normal defense. This bacteria is one of the leading cause of nosocomial infection in Indonesia. Treating infection caused by Pseudomonas aeruginosa is now more challenging due to its resistance to many classes of antibiotics. On the other hand, Muntingia calabura L. is a genus of plants in the family Elaeocarpaceae, which is spread widely throughout South East Asia, including Indonesia. Some of the researches in the past show antibacterial properties of these plants. Aim: to determine the antibacterial effect of Muntingia calabura L. Leaf extract to Pseudomonas aeruginosa. Method: This research is an experimental study using in vitro technique and non-equivalent control group design. The method used in this study was microdilution in 96-well microplate and concentrations of Muntinga calabura L. Leaf extract used in this study were 50-800mg/mL. Minimum Inhibitory Concentration (MIC) was measured by a spectrophotometer, while Minimum Bactericidal Concentration (MBC) was observed by direct streaking to the agar plate. Result: MIC value was found at the concentration range of 400-800 mg/mL, while MBC was found at concentration 800 mg/mL. Conclusion: There is a potential bactericidal effect of Muntingia calabura L. To Pseudomonas aeruginosa

Abstract

Introduction: Globally, the rate of child mortality is mostly due to recurrent infection and nutritional factors. Promotion of exclusive breastfeeding and appropriate weaning food can reduce the risk of getting a chronic disease and under-5 mortality and morbidity. Exclusive breastfeeding means giving only breast milk without adding and/or replacing it with any other food or drink (except drugs, vitamins, and minerals). Exclusive breastfeeding has many benefits both for mother and infant. Aim: This study was to investigate the correlation between maternal knowledge about breastfeeding and breastfeeding pattern among breastfeeding mothers at Waru Primary Healthcare Center Sidoarjo. Methods: This study is an observational analytical study employing cross-sectional design and Spearman correlation for data analysis. This study was conducted at Waru Primary Healthcare Center Sidoarjo between August and September 2017. This study was conducted in a total of 100 participants. This research used a questionnaire as an instrument. Resulta: The result showed a significant correlation (p = 0,049). Thus it can be concluded that there is a correlation between mother's knowledge level about breastfeeding with mother breastfeeding pattern at Waru District Health Center Sidoarjo. The correlation coefficient value (r=0.197) indicates that the positive correlation is very weak between the mother's knowledge level and the pattern of the lactating mother. Conclusion: These results indicate that the higher the level of mother's knowledge, the higher the pattern of breastfeeding mothers. Increased knowledge and breastfeeding patterns may reduce the risk of chronic illness, morbidity and mortality rates among under-fives. This research can be useful for education, and it is expected that health workers can cooperate with the government in promoting exclusive breastfeeding.
