Abstract

Wood bent has been observed on three wood species from forest people plantation, i.e. Rasamala (Altingia excelsa Noronha), Java Tamarind (Tamarindus indica L.) and Marasi (Hymenaea courbaril L.), through steaming and soaking in 3% NaOH pre-treatment.The results showed that pre-treatment by soaking in 3% NaOH for 7 days continued by steaming for 30 minutes at temperature of 105 + 3ºC, could increase bent ability of each wood as follows: Rasamala 124%, Marasi 41% and Java Tamarind wood 13%, compared to bent ability of these woods with steaming treatment only. The Rasamala wood has bigger bent-radius or more difficult to be bent than the two others. Bending radius and increasing of wood bending of wood with high specific gravity is lower than wood with low the specific gravity

Abstract

Type and dimension of cell, especially fiber and tracheid, generally is used as a standard of utilization and quality of product. Beside type and the presence of fiber, up to now unusual fiber dimension in the bark of Marobamban (Helicia spp.), is not yet discovered. Traditionally, this swamp species is planted merely for protecting land from erosion, but the other part of the trunk like bark and its fibers are not yet utilized. The aim of this research is to know the anatomical structure of Marobamban bark and the presence of unusual fiber dimension as well as the fiber class quality. This research was conducted in Wood Anatomy and Identification Laboratory Forestry Faculty, Mulawarman University for one month. IAWA (International Association of Wood Anatomist) is used as observation and analysis standard. The result shows that outer bark with grey white coloured has thorny fiber along the surface and hooks to each other. Fiber length is classified as short category with big diameter. Fiber lumina and wall thickness are classified to moderate and very thick  walled respectively. Fiber quality is classified to the third class.

Abstract

The feasibility of a preservative treatment using carbon dioxide (CO2) as a carrier solvent under various conditions was determined based on the treatability of three different commercial tropical wood species (Agathis sp., Palaquium sp., and Heritiera sp.). Treatment was conducted at six combinations of temperature and pressure (15ºC and 40 kgf/cm2, 15ºC and 60 kgf/cm2, 15ºC and 80 kgf/cm2, 25ºC and 60 kgf/cm2, 25ºC and 80 kgf/cm2, dan 35ºC and 80 kgf/cm2) with five replicates using two specimens of each wood species for each treatment. Results showed that most of these treatment conditions, except treatment at 15ºC and 40 kgf/cm2, resulted in retention levels above the Silafluofen toxic thereshold value (< 0.25 kg/m3) without any physical damages to all treated materials. The treatability of wood with CO2 impregnation was affected by the wood properties and treatment conditions

Abstract

Bending Stiffness values which is expressed in EI can be obtained by using bending test of beam in laboratory. Base on value of deflection that was entered to one particular equation, can be calculated the bending stiffness. Usually bending test in laboratory was conducted with beam put down above two simple placements by giving one point loading in the middle span or two points loading in one-third span each. The deflection was measured in the middle of span. In the calculation of bending stiffness, usually used the deflection of the bending moment only. In fact, there was deflection caused by shear load, so total deflection in the middle span is bending deflection plus shear deflection. The shear deflection on beams with certain length and dimension was compared to bending deflection that has different value to each other. The test of Acacia mangium timber beam showed that comparison value has variety; it can reach more than 15%. This matter will influence the value of the bending stiffness of beam. By including shear deflection higher bending stiffness value will be obtained, so it will yield more economical design. The objective of this research was to determine ratio of shear to bending deflection, and the influence of calculation of bending stiffness if shear deflection on the beam with certain dimension and length of span is calculated.

Abstract

The demand for hardwood pulp is rapidly increasing in the world, partly due to the limited availability of softwood and hardwood in developed country of the world and partly due to the technical advantages which short hardwood fibers process for various paper and paperboards. The study was confined to the establishment of appropriate criteria pulpwood from tropical forest.  The evaluation and analysis on the effect of wood specific gravity on the fiber properties, wood chemical properties, and pulp characteristics were conducted using data source from Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO).The data of wood specific gravity value for the species varied a wide range from 0.30 to 0.98, because of dense nature of wood, high specific gravity species are generally believed to require impregnation and cooking periods. While some among the denser species have high screening reject and high permanganate number (PN) or Kappa number (KN) values. The finding of liquor penetration of chips does not depend wholly on specific gravity but also on the anatomical structure and chemical constituents of wood. As to the other wood and fiber characteristics, strength and physical properties of pulp hand sheet, wood specific gravity a certain relationship to fiber morphology. The results showed that variability of wood specific gravity affected the cell wall thickness, lignin content and pulp sulfate quality. This result of analysis can be used as a preliminary pulping indicator.

Abstract

The inner-part of coconut wood has low to medium density, which have not been utilized yet optimally as construction material. The purpose of this study was to improve the properties of inner-part of coconut wood by densification, such as it can be considered as a substitute of wood. Pre-treatments were steaming (a1) and boiling (a2) at 120°C for 15 minutes, and pressing temperature were 150°C (b1) and 175°C (b2). Deformation targets were 10% (c1), 20% (c2) and 30% (c3) from the initial thickness. The results indicated that the treatments did not affect to some of the densified wood properties. The appearance of panel surface was smooth and shine, but darker than that of solid. The increasing of density was 4.43 ~ 27.21% with strain recovery of 0.17 ~ 0.52 after soaking in water for 24 hours at room temperature.

Abstract

It is known that compression wood by heat treatment needs approximately 20 hours at 180ºC to attempt the permanent fixation of compressive deformation. On the other hand, even the permanent fixation of compressive deformation by steam treatment is reached in 10 minutes at the same temperature, this method needs expensive apparatus and inapplicable for large wood dimensions. These both problems can be solved by Close System Compression (CSC) method. CSC is a method to press the wood inside an airtight seal chamber, which is placed between the two hot press plates. Wood moisture contents, which evaporate due to heat from hot press, are trapped inside the CSC and produce steam. The wood species used in this research was Randu (Bombax ceiba. L) with dimensions of 2 cm (L) x 2 cm (T) x 3 cm (R). The wood specimens were compressed into 2 cm in radial direction inside the CSC at 140ºC, 160ºC, and 180ºC for 10 min, 20 min and 30 min. They were compressed in air-dried, water saturated and steam saturated conditions, because it was predicted that moisture content of wood and steam pressure, which was produced inside the CSC has significantly effects on the fixation of wood, beside the temperature. The result shows that moisture content of the wood has an effect on the decreasing of recovery of set. However, it was needed 180ºC temperature and 10 kg/cm2 steam pressure to attempt the permanent fixation. Therefore, it was necessary to add water to produce the steam pressure besides that was produced from the evaporation of wood moisture content.
