Abstract

AbstractThe title of this paper is “An Analysis of Students’ Ability and Difficulties in Writing Descriptive Text”. The researcher did the research at vocational high school. This research focused on the students’ ability and difficulties in writing descriptive text. Even though descriptive text is not too difficult, but many students still found it difficult. The aims of the research are to know the ability of students in writing descriptive text, to know the difficulties of students in writing descriptive text, and to know how the teacher teaches descriptive text. This is a qualitative research. In collecting the data, the researcher used text analysis, observation and questionnaire. The components of writing that are analyzed are developing the ideas, organizing of ideas, grammar, vocabulary and punctuation.  The results of this study illustrate that student faced difficulties in organizing and developing ideas. They were not able to develop ideas on the texts they wrote. Whereas, in term of grammar there was no significant difficulty, they can write descriptive text by using the correct grammar. In term of vocabulary, it was difficult for students to choose appropriate vocabulary even some of them still used Bahasa Indonesia. In term of punctuation marks, there is no significant error.  Based on the results of this study, it is suggested for teachers to pay attention to the teaching structure of descriptive text in the development of ideas, arrangement of ideas, grammar, vocabulary and punctuation. Teachers are also expected to provide examples and practice about the descriptive text to the students so they can achieve the purpose of education, especially in English subject.

Abstract

Communication is a human activity everyday, people always communicate each other. Sometime people do not realize what they are talking about. To make a good communication, human must follow cooperative principles. That is why Grice offers to use theory of cooperative principle to avoid misunderstanding and misinterpretation between the speaker and the listener. However, some people do not fulfill those maxims to be used in the conversation for certain reasons, and when they violate the maxims it is called flouting maxims. A descriptive qualitative approach is used for this study because the data are in the form of words rather than of numbers and statistics. This study reveals that based on theory of Grice’s Cooperative, there are four maxims which are flouted by the main characters of  “Home Alone Part 2 ‘Lost in New York’” movie this movie since 1992 directed and written by John Hughes. The result shows that there are four Maxims Flouted by the main characters there are flouting maxim of quality, flouting maxim of quantity, flouting maxim of relevance, and flouting maxim of manner. And there are several reasons of flouting those maxims are data finding also revealed that the communication could still even though the main characters flouting the maxims. Four reasons by the main characters to flout the maxims are competitive, collaborative, convivial, and conflictive reason. In terms of types, quantity maxim flouting is in the highest rank and relevance maxim flouting is in the lowest rank. In terms of strategies, overstatement is the most frequently used and metaphor is the most rarely used. Finally, dealing with reasons for maxim flouting, conflictive reason has the highest rank in its occurrence.Communication is a human activity everyday, people always communicate each other. Abstract

This research investigated the implementation of cartoon story maker application as an instructional media in writing narrative text class, then to find out the strengths and weaknesses of cartoon story maker application as an instructional media in writing narrative text, and to find out the students’ response in writing narrative text by using cartoon story maker application as an instructional media. This study was conducted at a senior high school in Cianjur. The qualitative method was the research designed in this study. Therefore, observation, questionnaire, and interview were employed as the data collection in this research. The findings showed that cartoon story maker application creates fun learning and enjoyable learning for students and had a good atmosphere in the classroom, several strengths and weaknesses of cartoon story maker application. Besides the researcher also described their responses in writing narrative text by using cartoon story maker application. Cartoon story maker gives good impact for students, most of students give positives responses. It is supported by the fact that they enjoyed their writing process using cartoon story maker. To sum up, since the implementation of cartoon story maker has positive responses from the students and able to help them, this instructional media can be implemented in teaching writing narrative text in senior high school.

Abstract

Vocabulary is one of the most important things to teach English to young learners, however in the practice it faced some issues especially on the use of medias, the use of media which is not interesting can make students’ easy to get bored in learning. This research paper is intended at increasing vocabulary mastery and describing the implementation of teaching vocabulary by using storytelling to teach vocabulary to the fifth grader students of Jamaras elementary school. This research focused to get insight on the implementation of storytelling by using finger puppet in teaching vocabulary to young learners, to find out the strength and weaknesses of teaching vocabulary through story telling using finger puppet, and to find out the students response in teaching vocabulary through storytelling using finger puppet. This study employed a qualitative design. The researcher used two narrative stories to gather the data. Concerning the qualitative data, this research collected and analyzed data from classroom observation, guided interview, and guided questionnaire. This research was conducted in elementary school in Cianjur, involving a teacher and students of Jamaras elementary school. The participants were ten students of the fifth grade. The findings show, that storytelling by using finger puppet is beneficial to teach vocabulary, because it made the student easy to get new vocabulary. Whereas the strengths of the use of storytelling using puppet in teaching vocabulary were the students were more interested and not bored in the learning process. The weaknesses of the use of implementation storytelling using puppet was the students more focus on puppet than on the story that conveyed by the teacher and also from the students response from the questionnaire teaching vocabulary through storytelling can help them to get the new vocabulary in a fun way.

Abstract

The issues surrounding beauty concepts such as related to women in color, how society make their own standard of beauty and how its prevalence in any mass media’s advertisements deserve our attention. Fenty Beauty tried to handle those problems related to skin tone and beauty standards. The objectives of this research were to analyze how the cosmetic advertisement represent beauty concepts according to semiotics signs, and to decipher messages conveyed by verbal (tagline) and visual signs in cosmetic advertisement represent beauty concept. The participants of this research are Rihanna and eleven models in Fenty Beauty advertisement video in each scenes. The Fenty Beauty video itself captured woman with different skin tones, hair, body sizes, ethnicity and religion. To obtain the data the researcher used two instruments namely video observation, and documents analysis. The findings investigating the beauty concepts cover the skin tones, make up, hair and face symmetry. Meanwhile, the finding examining messages there verbal and visual sign. Verbal sign was found  in two types. The first is ‘the new generation of beauty’. It means as freedom of expression in creating beauty looks based on their apparences. The second is ‘Fenty Beauty by Rihanna’, it means beauty is something personality. The messages are conveyed in visual signs are everyone is beautiful in their own way with what is God already given. There’s no concrete standard for beauty relate to skintone, hairs and face symmetry. The natural make up always makes someone more gorgeous. Furthermore, the researcher would also suggest further research to incorporate readers to think critically and open-minded what they see in cosmetic advertisement.

Abstract

Pragmatics is branch of linguistics studies that attracts the writer to learn more about it. This study aims to identify the directive speech acts performed in “The Fault in Our Stars” movie script. Moreover, this study investigated how often the direct speech acts performed and which type of directive speech acts that are most frequently used in the movie script. The writer uses qualitative research method by collecting data from read the movie script, analyzing the dialogues of each characters, watch the movie and read the library research. A total of 40 directive speech acts were successfully identified. The result of analysis shows that the illocutionary acts with directive speech acts of suggest is the most frequently in the movie script (3, 50%). The least frequently used locutionary with the directive speech acts of order in the movie script (0, 0%). This study is expected to give some useful insights in understanding what directive speech acts is.  The writer hopes people can not only produce speech acts in their daily activities, but also understand why and how people react or response directive speech acts. Keywords: Directive speech acts, movie script, dialogues, qualitative.
