Abstract

The purpose of this study is to find out how the application of mind mapping method in improving students’wrting skill of descriptive paragraph of grade X students in SMA Harapan 3 Medan Harapan 3 Medan. This research is a Classroom Action Research. The subjects in this study were students of grade X SMA harapan 3 Medan.. While the object of this study is the application of mind mapping method in improving students’ writing skill of descriptive paragraph . Based on the results of the study, it was found that from the results of the action as much as 2 (two) cycles in grade X students of SMA Harapan 3 Medan concluded that the use of mind mapping method can improve writing skill of  descriptive paragraph. From the results of the Cycle I and Cycle II activities as many as 70% of students were declared complete in the writing material of  descriptive text with an average value of 71. Thus this study was stated to be successful and it could be said that the use of mind mapping method could improve students'wrting skill of descriptive paragraph.

Abstract

English as a foreign language only practiced in particular occasions and one of them is in classroom. It means classroom is a place where EFL learners mainly improve their English abilities. However, EFL learners tend to be passive learners because they are afraid of making mistakes and getting negative feedback from teacher. It leads EFL classroom has less interaction which affect EFL learners’ achievement. In order to enhance classroom interaction, teacher could use kinds of elicitation techniques. This study aims to find kinds of elicitation techniques used by a pre-service teacher in EFL classroom by using categorization from Long and Sato (1983) and Richards and Lockhart (1996). Besides, it is also to find its dominant kind. This study used qualitative research method and the data were gathered form transcript of a teaching video. Other than that, the data were analyzed qualitatively. The result showed that based on Long and Sato's (1983) categorization, 62 display questions (80.52 %) and 15 referential questions (19.48 %) found in EFL classroom. In addition, based on Richards and Lockhart’s (1996) categorization, 15 procedural questions (19.48 %), 55 convergent questions (71.43 %), and 7 divergent questions (9.09 %) found in EFL classroom. Furthermore, based on the nature of interaction, the dominant kind of elicitation technique was display question (80.52 %) while based on its purpose; convergent question (71.43 %) dominantly used by a pre-service teacher in EFL classroom.Key words: Elicitation techniques, Pre-service teacher, EFL learners, EFL classroom.

Abstract

 Abstract The title of this paper is “An Error Analysis of Students’ Translating Tenses”. The goal of this research are to find out the kind of errors do the students commonly make in English-Indonesian translation, especialy in tenses and to find out the causes of their errors in English-Indonesian translation tenses. The method that the writer used in this research was descriptive qualitative as its method to analyze and describe entire data. The research participants of this study was the member of grade XII T-Eind’s Class at SMK 2 Pasundan Cianjur. The member of partisipants consisits of 47 male students. The data was taken from translation test and interview. After getting entire the data, then it was analyzed and describe it. Then after analyzing them, the writer found the kind of errors when students’ translating tenses. such as translation verb, translation to be, translation of “be”, translation of plural word and the unsuitable dictions of transfer the words from SL to TL in tenses. Based on the analysis the error when students translated verb in tenses consists of 83 erors from 423 data, the error when students translated to be in tenses consists of 53 errors from 423 data, the error when students translate “be” in tenses consists of 35 errors from 423 data, the error when translation plural of word consist of 8 errors from 423 data, and the unsuitable diction of translfer the word from SL to Tl in tenses consists of 37 erors from 423 data. Moreover the causes of students errors when they translated tenses are translation used word to word method, the students have not a good source language (English language), the students have not a good comprehension of vocabulary and the students not understand about tenses (present continuous tense, past continuous tense and future countinuous tense). Some suggestions was given to develop the learners’ competence and the reseacher hoped this study benefit for others reseachers as futhermore reference. Keywords: translating, tenses, an error analysis.

Abstract

 AbstractListening is one of compulsory subjects for the students of English education study program of STKIP Siliwangi Bandung. It is taught at the first semester as a basic for the students to enhance others skills, such as speaking, reading, and writing. In fact, the students face problems in learning listening and it makes the objectives of learning do not achieve well. So, this research is aimed at creating listening course book to help the students learn effectively. This research focuses on listening for general communication. The research employed Research and Development. This method is divided into three parts; introductional study covers need analysis, literature review, proposal arrangements, and prototype;product developmentcovers materials arrangement and course book arrangement;and testinginvolves validation from expert, and revision. The subject of the research is the first semester students of English education study program of STKIP Siliwangi Bandung. The instruments used were interview and questionnaire. Interview was conducted to gather the data related with the themes used in the course book in every unit. There were six themes obtained through the interview. Then the themes chosen were developed based on the material guideline composed by the researcher in the previous research which cover macro and micro skill. Next is validation by three experts using questionaire. The revison covered the content, display and language, then the test was re-taken to gather the feasible of the coursebook. From the computation, the mean score of content hit the precentage of 79.17, while display was 77.78 and language was 77.5. from the resut, the researchers could assume that the course book was feasible and ready to use in teaching and learning of Listening for General Communication. Key words: listening for general communication, course book. Abstract

AbstractThe title of this paper is “An Analysis of Students’ Ability and Difficulties in Writing Descriptive Text”. The researcher did the research at vocational high school. This research focused on the students’ ability and difficulties in writing descriptive text. Even though descriptive text is not too difficult, but many students still found it difficult. The aims of the research are to know the ability of students in writing descriptive text, to know the difficulties of students in writing descriptive text, and to know how the teacher teaches descriptive text. This is a qualitative research. In collecting the data, the researcher used text analysis, observation and questionnaire. The components of writing that are analyzed are developing the ideas, organizing of ideas, grammar, vocabulary and punctuation.  The results of this study illustrate that student faced difficulties in organizing and developing ideas. They were not able to develop ideas on the texts they wrote. Whereas, in term of grammar there was no significant difficulty, they can write descriptive text by using the correct grammar. In term of vocabulary, it was difficult for students to choose appropriate vocabulary even some of them still used Bahasa Indonesia. In term of punctuation marks, there is no significant error.  Based on the results of this study, it is suggested for teachers to pay attention to the teaching structure of descriptive text in the development of ideas, arrangement of ideas, grammar, vocabulary and punctuation. Teachers are also expected to provide examples and practice about the descriptive text to the students so they can achieve the purpose of education, especially in English subject.

Abstract

In teaching and learning process there is an interaction between teacher and students known as classroom interaction. Classroom interaction can be broken down into two: teacher’s talk and student’s talk. However, in many classes it is common that teacher’s talk is more dominant than students’ talk. Deploying descriptive qualitative study,  this paper aimed to find out types of pre-service teacher’s talk in vocational high school classroom interactions, and to find out the type that most frequently used in that classroom interaction. The data were obtained from transcripts of the teaching video from three English pre-service teachers. The data were then analyzed and categorized by using framework of teachers’ talk proposed by Flanders (1970) namely Flanders Interaction Analysis Categories (FIAC). The result of this study shows that all categories of teachers’ talk occurred in the pre-service teacher classroom interaction with varied percentage of occurrence, such as Asks Question 53%, Accepts Feeling 3%, Praises or Encourages 7%, Accepts or Uses Ideas of Student 6%, Lecturers 9%, Gives Direction 18%, and Criticizes or Justifies Authority 4%. From the data, it can be seen that Asking Question is the category occurred the most in the classrooms which shows the pre-service teachers’ preference on using questions in their classroom interaction.Keywords: English class, classroom interaction, pre-service teacher, teacher’s talk, Flanders Interaction Analysis Categories (FIAC)

Abstract

AbstractThis study was designed to improve the students’ writing ability of report text by using Jigsaw technique. This study was conducted in two cycles by following the procedures of the action research. There are planning, implementing, observing, and reflecting. Each cycle consisted of two meetings. The data of the study were gathered through the following instruments, namely observation checklist, questionnaire and test. The subjects of this study were 32 students at eleventh grade of Administrasi Perkantoran (AP) program in academic year 2016-2017 of Nurulhidayah Pasundan Vocational School. The finding of the study indicated that Jigsaw technique was effective in enhancing the students’ motivation and participation. From the result of questionnaire, it showed that 74% students participated actively in the first cycle and 80% students participated in the second cycle. This implied that the first criteria of success had been fulfilled. Furthermore, the finding of the study indicated that Jigsaw technique was successful in improving students’ writing of report text. The improvement could be seen from the increase of students’ mean writing score from 55.09 in the pre-test cycle, and 74.62 in the first cycle increase become 80.46 in the second cycle. If it calculated into class percentage, there were 4 students (12.5 %) who passed KKM in the pre-test. Meanwhile, in the cycle 1, there were 24 students (75%) who passed KKM and it gained which was in the post-test cycle 2 there were 29 students (90.62%) who passed KKM. So, it indicated that the second criteria of success has been achieved. Keywords: Jigsaw technique, writing ability, teaching report text.

Abstract

 ABSTRACT This research concerns on the use of English Borrowing in the automotive article in Indonesian Motoblogs. Apart from that, there is an attempt to find out the dominate English Borrowing words that used by the article author, the reasons of an article author that used English Borrowing words in writing their article. The research was conducted by using qualitative method which is the source of data are the texts in the article of motoblogs (TMCblog.com, IwanBanaran.com, and Kobayogas.com), in collecting the data the researcher obtains the data by observing the word considered as English borrowing word from certain motoblogs, doing open ended interview to the author of motoblogs through email, and analyze every couple data with brief description based on Malmkjaer theory. The research findings showed that the types of English borrowing word that usually used by the author of automotive blog is dominated by Pure Loanword, and the reason of the author of automotive blog in applying English borrowing word in writing their article is because there is no equivalent word to shown or explain the author idea in writing the article, to shortening the word or sentence without discard the meaning, the last reason because English word are briefer and to the point in revealing the exact meaning. The researcher provide several suggestions, for lecturers it suggested could apply English borrowing word wisely especially in Morphology and Semantics class, and for students suggested that they can improve their skills and abilities in using and analyzing English Borrowing word that already used in morphology and semantics class. Keywords: Borrowing, Motoblog, Internet, Mass Media Online.

Abstract

Communication is a human activity everyday, people always communicate each other. Sometime people do not realize what they are talking about. To make a good communication, human must follow cooperative principles. That is why Grice offers to use theory of cooperative principle to avoid misunderstanding and misinterpretation between the speaker and the listener. However, some people do not fulfill those maxims to be used in the conversation for certain reasons, and when they violate the maxims it is called flouting maxims. A descriptive qualitative approach is used for this study because the data are in the form of words rather than of numbers and statistics. This study reveals that based on theory of Grice’s Cooperative, there are four maxims which are flouted by the main characters of  “Home Alone Part 2 ‘Lost in New York’” movie this movie since 1992 directed and written by John Hughes. The result shows that there are four Maxims Flouted by the main characters there are flouting maxim of quality, flouting maxim of quantity, flouting maxim of relevance, and flouting maxim of manner. And there are several reasons of flouting those maxims are data finding also revealed that the communication could still even though the main characters flouting the maxims. Four reasons by the main characters to flout the maxims are competitive, collaborative, convivial, and conflictive reason. In terms of types, quantity maxim flouting is in the highest rank and relevance maxim flouting is in the lowest rank. In terms of strategies, overstatement is the most frequently used and metaphor is the most rarely used. Abstract

 AbstractSpeaking is one of important aspects of language. Speaking plays an important role in transfering English speaking skill to students as well as the key to the success of teaching learning process of speaking. There are many methods or approaches used by lecturers in the classroom in teaching speaking in university, they however considered not so effective in stimulating students to be more active in speaking and to have more bravery and self confidence to use their own English although they may make more mistakes. Based on the depicted reality, the researcher feels chalenged to know how is the implementation of Community Language Learning (CLL) method, to investigate its strengths and weaknesses, as well as to find out students’ difficulties in teaching s6peaking.This research entitled The Implementation of Community Language Learning (CLL) in Teaching Speaking. This research is conducted on the second semester students of English Education Study Program who are taking Speaking For General Communication II on the second semester students at one of universities in Cianjur. This research aims to know how the implementation of CLL and to investigate its strengths and weaknesses, as well as to find out students’ difficulties in learning speaking through CLL.This research uses qualitative method which employs several techniques in collecting the data.
