The Journal of Linguistics and Language Teaching contains the research manuscripts related to the broad areas of Linguistics and English Language Teaching. Abstract

This paper seeks to explore the undergraduates’ experiences when reading journal articles as references for their thesis composition through a narrative inquiry. Four undergraduates of English Language Education program at UIN Mataram were interviewed to analyze  what they encountered when reading such genre. The findings suggest that their experiences mostly circulated around their motivation and challenges, therefore the narratives were focused on these facets. In terms of motivation, these students seemed to be strongly driven by controlled motivation that entailed the need for a model, accessibility and currency, as well as demands from supervisors and institutions. Furthermore, these students also encountered challenges in terms of unfamiliar academic technical terms and vocabulary, boredom due to text complexities, and failed reading strategies. These findings imply the need of scaffolding the reading of journal articles for undergraduates in their final year of study.

Abstract

Learning English in Junior High School emphasizes on four language skills, they are speaking,writing, reading,and listening. However, it sometimes collides with the complexity of grammar, one of which is learning the present simple present tense in which for some people is acomplicated matter and makes it difficult for them in understanding English. Departing from this problem, a new breakthrough is needed, so that students are interested in learning English. Today’s education emphasizes on how to learn by utilizing technological sophistication, then Multimedia is one of the technologies that can be used to stimulate thoughts, feelings, concerns, and  abilities or skills of  learners. This technology has a very positive impact on students since it can provide solutions and ease in carrying out the learning process. The purpose of the study was to describe the implementation of interactive multimedia and to describe the level of defiance  of the eighth grade students of SMP Muhammadiyah I Surakarta in learning of Simple Present Tense.  The study employed a quantitative research approach, and the type used was an experiment. The experimental design in this study was randomized pre-test post-test design. The sample in this study was class VIII A, assigned as the Experiment Group 1 (EG1) who was taught by using interactive multimedia, while class VIII B, assigned as the Experimental Group 2 (EG2) who was taught by  using the lecturing method and supported by using a handout. After learning was complete, both groups were given the same post-test. The result found that the EG1 who given treatment by using interactive multimedia got higher results than the EG2 who treated by Handout, where the mean score of the EG1 was 83.04, while the mean score of the EG2 was 72.96. Based on the result above, it was indicated that the students of SMP Muhammadiyah I Surakarta was more comprehend in learning The Simple Present Tense by using interactive multimedia better than conventionally, since interactive multimeda can build their creativity power and increase their understanding in English.

Abstract

Motivation has been long believed to be an essential contributor to students’ success in learning English. Many studies (e.g., Gbollie & Keamu, 2017; Wang, 2008; Zhang & Xiao, 2006) have been dedicated to investigating the relationship between motivation and success in learning English. While these studies have contributed to shedding light on the importance of motivation on students’ achievement in learning English, insufficient research has been conducted to address the concept of motivation itself, how the concept has evolved since the first time it was developed, and to what extent motivation affects both teachers and students’ performances at school. Owing to this fact, the present article seeks to discuss the notion and conceptualization of motivation by following several steps. First, the present paper took on arguments from prominent figures on the field of motivation to explore the essence of motivation and why it is essential for English as second or foreign language (ESL/EFL) learning. The conversation then built on the current theoretical framework of types and factors influencing student and teacher motivation. Following that, a plethora of discussions on the possible ways to increase student and teacher enthusiasm and motivation inside EFL classrooms were elaborated.

Abstract

This is a case study that aims at analyzing students' English proficiency as reflected in students' TOEFL-Like scores at Universitas Sains Alqur'an Central Java in Wonosobo, Indonesia particularly years 2017, 2018, and 2019. The study focuses on students' achievement of English proficiency embedded in TOEFL-Like scores which consist of three sections, namely Listening, Structure and Written Expression, and comprehension of Reading. Considering the huge number of the data (2811 participants), to do the research, the data are conducted statistically using the SPSS application. In detail, the data were analyzed using descriptive statistics to find mean (to know students proficiency achievement), minimum, maximum and standard deviation values (to know the variance of students' English proficiency levels). Categorization of the proficiency levels is referred to Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR) standard. The study revealed that structure and written expression is the most difficult test faced then consecutively reading and listening. Then, the lowest and the highest scores were 217 and 567 with a standard deviation 31, 4. Furthermore, the mean of the total TOEFL-Like score achieved was 369, 09. Therefore, the students were mostly categorized as basic users (A2). The study suggests that an appropriate module can be considered to help the students to reach better proficiency, especially in a matter of structure and written expression section.

Abstract

This study aimed at investigating how far teachers and students really understand the existence of character education in the curriculum, especially through the teaching and learning process in the classroom by using English textbooks as a medium. There were six teachers and six students who participated in this research. A semi-structured interview with a one-on-one interview was conducted in order to see the perspective of teachers and students about character education in their textbooks.  The study revealed that both teachers’ and students’ agreed that character education is essential in creating good individuals with noble characters to tackle moral degradation. Their understanding of character education in the textbooks they were using now was satisfactory. It can be seen through both teachers and students were aware of dealing with character values in the textbooks that embedded in the teaching and learning materials which can be presented both in form of implicit and explicit but they did not know about 18 character values proposed by the government yet.

Abstract

This study attempts to elaborate on the importance of cultural understanding of English foreign learners’ communicative competence. In the English language teaching in Indonesia, the role of culture is a crucial thing which needs to be combined with the teaching material to assist teachers and students for reaching the learning objective. Based on the findings of some studies, English learners in Indonesia face several obstacles when they find some terms which are unable to get its point in the literal meaning. Understanding the background culture in learning English is expected to minimize students' misunderstanding and lead them to use proper English in real communication. Integrated teaching material which contains cultural contents and its backgrounds is one way to introduce English to the learners, not only as a language but as a culture as well. Providing topics of learning based on authentic sources from native English speaking countries such as fable, short story, conversation role-play, songs, and movie. Arranging integrated teaching material that covers listening, speaking, reading, and writing with included cultural or arts contents of English native speakers. The teacher should not only teach students in linguistic competence but should teach them communicative competence as well because mastering linguistic competence is insufficient to use English in natural discourse. The appropriateness of English in use toward communication context is the objective of understanding the culture and language.

Abstract

This research is motivated by Indonesian language learning which requires each student to master four language skills, namely listening, speaking, reading and writing. In children with dyslexia or reading difficulties, the implementation efforts made by the 7th grade teacher of the Bengkulu City Special School 05 so that the child continues to master language skills despite having difficulty reading. This study aims to describe the methods used by teachers in Indonesian language learning so that dyslexic children can master reading skills. This type of research is descriptive qualitative research. Data collection techniques used were observation, interviews, and documentation. Meanwhile, the data analysis techniques used were data reduction, data presentation, and finally verification. The results of the study concluded that the implementation of learning in dyslexic children was preparation, implementation, and evaluation. The Indonesian language learning method used by the 7th grade teacher of SLB N 05 Bengkulu City in dyslexic children is the lecture method, the audiolingual method, the skimming method, and the picture and picture cooperative method.

Abstract

This research aims to determine students' perceptions on the implementation of the learning process during the Covid 19 pandemic at the graduate program of English Education of the University of Bengkulu. This research is a descriptive research involving students in academic year of 2019/2020 from two classes consisting of 34 students. The data was taken using a questionnaire in the form of Google form consisting of 40 questions with 5 answer options: strongly agree, agree, neutral, disagree, and strongly disagree and semi-structured written interview given through the Google Classroom application. The data obtained were analyzed quantitatively and qualitatively. The results of this research indicate that students have a positive perception of the implementation of the learning process during the Covid19 pandemic the the graduate program of English Education of university of Bengkulu with the averageobtained  score of 1211.25 which is in the good category. Moreover, the data obtained from the written interview showed that most students gave positive responses to online learning conducted at the graduate program of English education of the University of Bengkulu. These findings are expected to be taken into consideration to improve and prepare for the better future online and offline learning process at the University of Bengkulu, especially at the Graduate Program of English Education of the University of Bengkulu.

Abstract

This study investigated how the Talking Chips Technique can help students to improve their speaking. The sample was only one class and  total number of students was 36 students. This study used a time series design and three data collection, i.e. note taking, participant observation, and speaking test. The data from observation were analyzed by using thematic analysis and band score of speaking. This study was conducted by using multiple pre-test and post-test. Therefore, the findings of this study were based on pre- test, treatments and post- test. During the treatments, there were problems related to classroom management (noisy, low participation, laughing), fluency (pause, flow and speed) and accuracy (pronunciation, grammar and vocabulary). Those problems could be minimized. After post-test, there were still problems, but the problems were fewer than previous ones like only fluency and accuracy because students had showed the awareness and enthusiasm in speaking English. This study showed the improvement of students’ speaking achievement from treatment until posttest. It was proved by the mean score pretest and posttest. In pre-test, the mean score of fluency was 61.1 and 62.81 for accuracy. In post-test, the mean score of fluency was 71.451 and accuracy was 74.69. Then, t- test for fluency was 7.05 and t-test for accuracy was 8.31 with t critical or table was 2.031. It meant that H1 was accepted. There was significance improvement of students’ speaking in terms of fluency and accuracy.  The findings suggest that the students still need further treatments to improve their speaking even though they have achieved the target.

Abstract

At the graduate level, students’ poor performance cuts across almost all the compulsory subjects in which English is inclusive. Poor academic performance of students is one problem impeding the smooth actualization of the educational purpose, which is to prepare an individual for mentally serving both himself and society. Therefore, the primary purpose of this research is to discover the internal factors, such as lack of motivation factors contributing to the poor academic performance of graduate students of the English Department. In this research, researchers selected three participants and utilized an interview as the method to collect the data, and interview guidelines as the instrument. The authors analysed the data qualitatively and explained the findings descriptively. Several things will affect students’ academic performance, especially those related to motivation. It starts from within the students themselves, from the family environment, and even lecturers greatly affect student motivation in improving academic performance. It should not only focus on the mistakes made by students, as there must be a cause behind it all. In a nutshell, the results of this study revealed that one aspect of internal factors causing poor academic performance was the lack of motivation derived from two sizeable directions, family and teacher.
