Abstract

The objectives of the research are to know the errors made by the learners in their English narrative composition; to identify the factors the learners made the errors; to identify the errors made by the learners; to correct the errors which have been made; to improve the teaching quality which is appropriate with the curriculum and the syllabus; as well as to get the data and the explanation about the difficulties in studying English especially in arranging the English narrative composition. The method used in this research is descriptive method that gives the data and the explanation about the recent symptoms of the errors made by the learners. The descriptive method consists of the ways in giving the note, the analysis and the interpretation about the recent condition. The characteristic of the descriptive method is to give the existence of the data which is straight to the problems as the recent variables are not manipulated. The research was carried out by conducting a written test about English narrative composition to the learners. After analyzing the data, the findings point out that the errors of derivational morphology is 10.3% and the inflectional morphology releases in 89.7 %.Key words: morphology, narrative composition, error analysis

Abstract

The problems of this research were how to improve vocabulary using comic and how to motivate the students to apply it in their English. The research was guided by a conceptual framework leading to the using comic through peer work to improve their motivation to speak English during the process of classroom communication interaction. The research type was an action research. The subject consisted of 20 students of the first grade of SMK Al Hidayah 1 Cilandak  in 2015-2016 academic years. The research data were collected using test (test after first treatment and test after the second treatment), observation for collecting data on the students’ motivation in improving vocabulary ability using series pictures. Data on vocabulary ability using comic were analyzed using the descriptive and statistic analysis, to know the improvement in mean students after the first cycle and the second cycle. Based on the first cycle, the students’ average was 67.8, then, on the second treatment, the students’ average increase to be 78.8. It can conclude that teaching vocabulary using comic can improve students’ vocabulary ability.Key words: improve, vocabulary, comic

Abstract

AbstractThe objective of this study is to find the ways of a postgraduate student in investing in the shaping of her second language identity in the local communities of practice in a city in the UK. This research is a case study which employs qualitative descriptive method. Data was gathered through diaries and interviews. It is found that the subject, Jasmine, was active in the communities. She knew how she should invest her English in there although she was not too confident with her English. She involved in several communities in the UK, for example meeting with people in the church, visiting the local family, gathering in the cafe, and involving in the English study club. She did not find limitation to speak English from the native speakers in the communities.  This implies that she found who herself and how she should invest in the societies. These finally shape her identity as a second language learner in the local communities. In conclusion, her investment in the local communities has shaped her second language identity. Key Words: Second Language Learner, investment, identity

Abstract

This paper offers a broad semiotical overview of the horror film, in Conjuring 2. Horror movies aim to bring the audience to deep fear. Therefore, this out of our complacency in the quotidian world, by way of negative emotions such as horror, fear, suspense, terror, and disgust, that is represented in movies. To do so, horror addresses fears that are both universally taboo and that also respond to historically and culturally specific anxieties.Therefore, this journal focuses in to main characters Valak and Loraine, who lead this film to be a horror. This journal is the result of an exploration into the literary reviews of the contemporary horror genre and a semiotic analysis a paranormal, Lorraine. In this journal, the research would discuss a few ethical and semiotic problems related to reality's ability to actually take place within, and break through, fictional representations. This research concerned with the presence of material bodies in the performing sign and code of binnary opposition. This research of signs, codes and conventions in film is called semiotics. Semiotic analysis is a way to explain how an audience makes meaning from codes. This research describes an innovative film studies assignment in which readers can explore still horrorism and Hollywood cinema

Abstract

The aim of this research is to find out morphological and syntactical errors made by the students in their composition, the frequency of errors and  the dominant type of error, the sources of error, and find a remedial teaching. The method that was used in this research is descriptive method, a method which seeks to provide the depicition or description of a case. This research conducted on the second semester of 2016/2017 in SMK Kharismawita 2 Jakarta. Meanwhile, the sample of this research is 30 students of XI APh class of SMK Kharismawita 2. In this case, the researchers use purposive sampling in choosing the sample and  the method of this research is qualitative research.In this research the researchers are going to find some morphological errors made by the students, these errors can be classified into 9 categories of morphological errors. These are categories, number, percentage of morphological errors made by the students : adverbs, adjectives, indefinite demonstratives, adjectives, nouns, plurals, possesive adjectives, past formations, singulars and to infinitives.Meanwhile, in this research, the researchers are going to find some syntactical errors made by the students. These categories are categorized based on surface strategy taxonomy. These are the categories, the numbers and the percentage : omission, addition, misformation, and misordering.

Abstract

The objective of this study is to investigate whether teaching using song or story-telling is more effective in mastering English vocabulary for elementary students. The method of this research is quasi experiment. The data is analyzed by using t-test. Based on the data analysis, the results show that there is significant difference of student’s vocabulary mastery those who are taught using song and those who are taught using story-telling. It was supported by the result of class experiment mean 79,83, median 80,83, modus 81, 83, standard deviation 7,30,  while the result of class control mean 69.50, median 74, 25, modus, 71,5 and standard deviation 7,21. Based on t-test show t counting= 5,620 and t table =2,002 with significance 5% or ( ) and dk=58 that it is meant t counting > t table (5,620 > 2,002) and Ho is rejected and H1 is accepted. In short, teaching using song on students mastering English vocabulary is more effective than using story-telling for the fourth grade students.  Key words: vocabulary, song, story-telling

Abstract

The aim of this research is to find out the effect of vocabulary mastery and logical thinking towards the students’ listening skill. The research was conducted at SMK. The population in this research is 450 students of Grade XI, with 90 sample students. The method used in this research is a survey method. The data are obtained from the vocabulary test, logical thinking test and listening test. The hypothesis test are showed : 1.) There are any significant effects vocabulary mastery and logical thinking towards listening skill. That is proved by Sig. 0,000 < 0,05 and Fo = 19,049. Based on the result of the research, it proves that students’ vocabulary and logical thinking mastery give positive contribution towards the students’ listening skill.Keywords : Vocabulary Mastery, Logical Thinking, Listening Skill,

Abstract

The use of film as learning media can support teachers and students in learning speaking English process. Thus, it can develop the speaking skill, language content, and vocabulary mastery of the students. This can be used by the teachers as a media resource to help the students improve  their speaking skill. Film is a learning media for learners to access deeper about the introductory of new words, phrase, or even simple sentences. It also assists students to learn more about English expressions. It can be concluded that in order to help the students to practice their speaking skill, the teacher should pay more attention to material, media and activities in the class. Abstract

This research is aimed at knowing the effect of reading habit on students’ recount writing skill. This research employs a survey method with samples consisting of 42 students randomly drawn from four different classes XI of SMKN in kota Serang. The data are collected by distributing questionnaires and writing tests, are analyzed applying regression and correlation analyses. The research result shows there is a significant effect of reading habit on students’ recount writing skill, as shown by the value of sig 0.017 < 0.05 and tO 2.483. Based on the result of the research, it can be concluded that reading habit has an effect on student’s recount skill.

Abstract

The objective of the research is to get empirical data concerning the effects of vocabulary and grammar mastery towards student’s reading comprehension. This research is done by Kolgomorov-Smirnov method, ANOVA Table, Proportional Correct for testing the item difficulties, Biserial Coefficient and Kuder Richarson testing. Samples are taken of the achievable population were 60 students from grade eleven of social and science in section 3 and 4 at SMA Negeri 14 Jakarta. Data collection is conducted by giving test for reading comprehesion, test for vocabulary mastery, and test for grammar. The results show that there are significant effects of vocabulary mastery and grammar mastery altogether towards student’s reading comprehension of X1 grade at state Senior High Schools in West Jakarta. It is proven by the score of Fo = 4,160 dan Sig. = 0,021 < 0, 05. There is a significant effect of vocabulary mastery towards student’s reading comprehension as it is proved by the score of to = 2,662 dan Sig. = 0,001 < 0,05. There is a significant effect of grammar mastery towards student’s reading comprehension as it is proved by the score of to =-0,222 dan Sig. = 0,082 > 0,05 Key words: vocabulary mastery, grammar mastery, reading comprehension
