Abstract

Reagent selection is one of the factors that could influence the quality of laboratory results. The use of open system tools gives thepossibility to choose the best reagents, including the reagent for high density lipoprotein (HDL) determination. The aim of this studywas to compare HDL level determination using two different reagents measured by Hitachi 902. A cross sectional study was done fromJanuary to February 2007 in Ratulangi Medical Centre Laboratory, Makassar. From 47 samples we found that the mean HDL levelusing Daichi reagent was 50.47 mg/dl ranging from 45.99 mg/dl to 54.94 mg/dl and the mean using Roche reagent was 56.23 mg/dlranging from 50.93 mg/dl to 61.53 mg/dl with p = 0.098, and Pearson Correlation was 0.900 with p = 0.000. There was no significantdifference between HDL level measured by Hitachi 902 using Daichi and Roche reagents.

Abstract

Nasopharyngeal Carcinoma (NPC) is one of the most frequent malignancy disease in Java and the incidence rate at several Hospitalsseems increasing yearly. Prevalence of NCP in Indonesian were 3.9 per 100.000 citizen each year. Eipsten-Barr Virus (EBV) is one of theetiological agents of Nasopharyngeal Carcinoma (NPC) and infected B lymphocyte that cause transformation of it to LymphoblastoidCell Line and expresses several antigens. One of them is known as Latent membrane Protein 2A (LMP2A). These antigens is the maintarget of Cytotoxic T lymphocyte (CTL) in immune system surveillance by recognizing an epitope Human Leukocyte Antigen (HLA)class I complexes which expressed on the target cell surface. Beside EBV, there are other factors that. Research of the HLA class I antigenis one of the immune genetic system that has the ability as genetic sensitivity to the disease. The research in NPC patients is not tobe done to show representative for of population in Indonesia especially in Java. The aim of the study was to know the associationbetween HLA class I profile and NPC patients in Java population and to isolate lymphocyte from peripheral blood 24 NPC patients formicrolymphocytotoxicity test with Terasaki Plate derived from UCLA-USA. The results is significantly associated to HLA – A 24 (RR 2.25),HLA A2 (RR 1.635) and HLA A11 (RR 1.065). Based on these HLA class 1 profile as an immune genetics marker on NPC is one of themost important target. In order to develop EBV vaccine in the future, this is necessary especially for Java Population in Indonesia.

Abstract

The role of electrolytes in the human body is very important. Almost all metabolic processes are affected by electrolytes. The accuracyof examination results depend on the management in pre-analytical, analytical, and post-analytical processes. The management ofspecimen is one of the essential factors in pre-analytical process that may influence the accuracy of laboratory results. This study haspurposed to observe the influence of time-interval variation at the examination of Na, K, and Cl serum concentration. A cross-sectionalstudy was conducted on 30 outpatient’s serum samples who visited the Clinical Pathology Laboratory of Dr. Wahidin Sudirohusodohospital in Makassar during July to August 2007. The Na, K, and Cl serum samples were examined immediately, 1 hour-delayed, and2 hours-delayed. Data were analyzed using paired T test in SPSS version 11.5. In this study we found that there was no significantdifference for Na and Cl between immediate and delayed samples, similarly showed for K between immediate and 1 hour-delayed (p >0.05). A significant different for K between immediate and 2 hours delayed, and between the first hour and the second hour delayedsamples (p < 0.05). From this study we could conclude that delayed samples more than 2 hours had no influence for Na and Clexamination result. Delayed samples more than 2 hours for K had influence for the examination result.

Abstract

Abstract

Calcium measurements in the emergency laboratory use several instruments. Nova pHox Plus (group A) measures ionized calciumwhereas Beckman Synchron CX5 (group B) and Cobas Integra (group C) measures total calcium. Comparison of the results from the threeauto analysers has never been performed. To compare calcium results using three auto analyzers are Nova pHox Plus, Beckman SynchronCX5, and Cobas Integra. Samples consisting of whole blood were examined by Nova pHox Plus auto analyser and serum samples wereexamined using Beckman Synchron CX5 and Cobas Integra auto analyser. This study has been carried out on 21 individuals. Statisticalanalysis was performed using T-test and Pearson correlation coefficient. The level of significance was determined as 0.05. Results of thethree auto analysers did not show significant correlation (P > 0.05). There were not significant correlation between Nova pHox Plusand Beckman CX5, Cobas Integra.

Abstract

Hypothyroid in the pregnancy particularly in first trimester can influence the development of brain and neurophysiologic system infoetus. The diagnose approach of hypothyroid with laboratory evaluation which measure AntiTPO, TSH, and FT4 is the recommendedchoice. Full attention should be paid towards the treatment and management of hypothyroid in the pregnancy in order to avoid anybad complication.

Abstract

Pleural effusion is a fluid excess into pleural cavity due to transudation or exudation processes. The fluid deposited in the cavity canthreat the patient’s life. The pleural effusion could be produced in a patient with tuberculosis, cancer, cardiac failure, renal failure orviral/bacterial infection. The study is aimed to analyze the patterns of substance in the pleural effusion fluids produced by differentdiseases. A cross sectional study was performed from June 2006 to June 2007 at Clinical Pathology Laboratory of Dr. WahidinSudirohusodo Hospital, Makassar. The fluids were tested for glucose, total protein, LDH, and leukocyte count. Of 87 pleural effusion fluidsamples from 14–80 years old patients, 34.5% were transudates and 65.5% were exudates. Glucose value was higher (one tail T test,p < 0.01) in transudates group, whereas protein, LDH and leukocyte count were higher (one tail T test, p < 0.01) in exudates group. There were no significant differences of glucose, protein, LDH and leukocyte count among diseases within transudates group, as well aswithin exudates group. Staphylococcus spp., Klebsiella spp., and Acinetobacter spp., were the predominant bacteria revealed from thefluid cultures. Values of glucose, protein, LDH and leukocyte count have a different pattern between transudates and exudates groups. However, no special patterns were found among diseases within groups.
