Abstract

The purpose of the research was to describe the results of the speaking problem factors of class XI students at SMA Negeri 1 Tanjung Selor. The design of the research was a descriptive. The subject was taken by random sampling technique. The researcher took 28 students of class XI with each representative from 8 classes. To collect the data, the researcher used documentation, questionnaire, and interview. Based on the results of the questionnaire showed that 1) there were 53.6% of students answered the lack of proper vocabulary selection, 2) 42.9% of students answered less confident in pronunciation, 3) 35.7% of students answered that they did not use proper grammar, and 46.4% of students answered that they could not speak English well. The results of interview with the teacher of English and the students showed that there were several problems faced by the students namely weak of grammar, weak of pronunciation in English, not fluent in speaking English, lack of vocabulary, difficulty compiling English sentences, lack of practice speaking at home and at school, embarrassed by wrong pronunciation and fear of being laughed at by friends. Based on the result of the research showed there were some factor of speaking problems faced by the eleventh graders of SMA Negeri 1 Tanjung Selor namely less of confidence, weak of grammar, weak of pronunciation in English, not fluent in speaking English, lack of vocabulary, difficulty compiling English sentences, lack of practice speaking.

Abstract

This study aimed to determine students’ learning style in ninth grade at SMPN 9 Tarakan. This research is a qualitative descriptive research. The targets of this study were teachers and students of SMPN 9 Tarakan. Data collection techniques used questionnaires and observations.  From the data collected, based on the results of data analysis, it stated that class IX students who were involved in learning process tend to have a visual learning style. Students who had a visual learning style of 57%, auditory percentage of 13%, and kinestics of 30%. So from the results of this study it can be concluded that class XII students who take online learning tend to have a visual learning style.

Abstract

This research aimed to find out the average difference of Augmented Reality students' learning results in enhancing vocabulary mastery understanding about describing animals. The subjects of this research were 26 students from grades 7-6 of SMP Negeri 7 Tarakan in the academic year 2021/2022 using the pre-experimental method. This was research with One Group Pretest-Posttest design. Sample selection using Purposive Sampling. The instruments were a vocabulary test in the pretest and posttest to measure students’ achievement in the learning process during treatments. The hypothesis was tested using Parametric Paired Sample T-Test. Paired Sample T-Test showed that the average students score in Pretest and Posttest. This is evidenced by the results of the average score of students. The average score in the Pretest was 53,12 and the average score in the posttest was 72,81. The results show the posttest was higher than the Pretest value. This shows that there was a significant difference in the students' vocabulary mastery at the pretest and posttest. Other than that, the value of N Gains both pre-test and post-test showed 0.42 is categorized as Normal. In addition, the paired sample t-test test results showed that -t-test (-7.010) is smaller than -t-table (-2.060). Based on the test results, the researchers concluded that the use of Augmented Reality media was proven to be effective in enhancing vocabulary comprehension learning outcomes in describing animals in the seventh grade of SMP Negeri 7 Tarakan

Abstract

This research aimed to find out whether there was any significant difference in English National Examination results by considering school status, school accreditation, major, gender, and students’ achievement. This research employed a causal-comparative design. The sample of this research was 1,728 students of Senior High Schools in Nunukan regency in the 2018/2019 academic year. Based on the results of data analysis, it was found that (1) the students in public schools were better than those in private schools, (2) the school accreditations did not give any differences in the English National Examination results where the schools with lower accreditation apparently had better English National examination results, (3) the students in natural science were better than those in social science, (4) the female students were better than male students, and (5) the English national examination results were in a low category. The students who got higher scores in English National Examination would acquire higher scores in National Examination (NUN).

Abstract

The purpose of this study is to describe how teachers adapt both verbal and nonverbal communication, as well as the effects of these two types of communication on students' motivation to learn English. This study analyzed the instructors' verbal and nonverbal communication in the English classroom using the framework of teachers' talk developed by Sinclair and Brazil (1985) and Wang and Loewen (2015). Transcripts of lessons and video recordings of teachers' behavior were used to collect data. Procedures for data analysis involve organizing and prepping the data, coding, summarizing, and interpreting the data using the teachers' utterances and behaviors as the unit of analysis. Initial analysis results were looked at using data source triangulation and focused group discussion to validate the findings. The research revealed that questioning was the most common form of verbal communication among teachers, while hand gestures and facial expressions were the most common forms of non-verbal communication. Questions are the most inspirational instructors' verbal communication, and facial expressions are the most inspirational teachers' non-verbal communication.

Abstract

The purpose of this study was to describe the seventh-ninth grade students' learning motivation in mastering English speaking skills. The sample in this study were 27 seventh grade students. The material to be used in this study is qualitative material related to data that motivates seventh-ninth grade students to master English speaking skills. The data analysis used is: Qualitative Descriptive Analysis. As for the results of this study, the learning motivation of seventh-ninth grade students regarding the mastery of speaking skills (speaking) almost half of the students already have motivation. It can be seen from the results of the answers to the questionnaire filled out by the respondents that almost half of these students have motivation. Based on this research, some relevant learning implications and useful motivations are recommended to increase students' learning motivation in English.

Abstract

The objective of this research was obtain empirical evidence from the distribution of Higher order thinking skills based on the revised edition of Bloom’s Taxonomy on multiple choices questions in reading test items in reading skill at English department 2018.This research was conducting by using content analysis method, because the researcher identifies the specific characters of the material in reading multiple choices questions in reading test items. This research uses qualitative data because the data is in the form of words. The object of this research was the reading multiple choices in reading test items at English department 2018. The data was collected through several instruments, namely the exercises sheet of reading test items, interview, checklist table and Bloom’s taxonomy guidelines. The result of this research showed that, the higher order thinking skills in reading skill at English department obtained 11 out of 25 questions in reading multiple choices (44%) while the lower order thinking questions obtained 14 of 25 reading multiple choices questions (56%). The result of the distribution of higher order thinking skills were : analyze skills get the highest distribution, 6 of 25 multiple choices questions in reading test items (24%), evaluating skills get 4 out of 25 questions in reading test items (16%), create skills get 1 out of 25 questions in reading test items (4%). Overall, it concluded that the distribution of the higher order thinking skills is lower than lower order thinking skills.
