Abstract

All of the students that have different learning style learn in listening class include the visuals students. This research investigates: how the visual students learn in listening class at the third-semester students of IAIN Madura (Previously STAIN Pamekasan) and what kind of difficulties faced by visual students in listening class and what factors that make the visual students difficult to comprehend the material in listening class. This is qualitative research. The researcher obtained the data through observation, interview and documentation. The results of this research are the visual students in listening class like doodle and some of them like movies. The difficulties faced by the visual students in listening class are: difficult to answer the question directly and difficult to concentrate when they listened the material. The most factor that makes the visual students difficult to comprehend the material because the situation is crowded. From this research, it is also found that not all of the visual students in listening class like watch movies have a problem or difficult with the verbal or oral instruction, they loss their concentration and can learn in the noise or crowded situation of listening class.

Abstract

The number of English textbooks facilitates the students in their reading comprehension process because it will help them easier in comprehending the text and increasing the student?s knowledge. This research investigates about what are the advantages of numbers of English textbooks in student?s reading comprehension at the third semester of TBI IAIN Madura (Formerly STAIN Pamekasan) and how do the numbers of English textbooks help in student?s reading comprehension. 10 students are observed. The study was conducted using narrative qualitative research. The data are gotten from observation, interview, and documentation. The result of this research shows that there were four advantages of numbers of English textbooks in student?s reading comprehension, they are as a source of knowledge, as the references, as a training to have better thinking, and as pleasure. And how the numbers of English textbooks help in student?s reading comprehension, most of the students realize that by reading several books, it helps them easier in comprehending the text, reaching higher levels of thought, add up new vocabularies, understanding reading text easily.

Abstract

Syntax is the branch of linguistics that described the sentence structure, songs are composed by a collection of phrases and sentences are also interested to be studied through syntax. This research aims to describe the sentence structure through a tree diagram and to find the sentence structure appears in two Adele?s song, especially in writing a descriptive text. This research employs a descriptive qualitative method. Two kinds of data collection were used to collect the data, those are observation and documentation. In observation, the researcher did something such as listening to the songs ?Someone Like You? and ?Don?t You Remember? and listening to the songs again focusing on the lyrics. In the documentation, analyzing the lyrics from each song and writing down all the lyrics of two songs to be analyzed use tree diagram. Having analyzed the data, then, finally found sixty forms of the structure of the two Adele?s songs. From the two of Adele?s songs used as the samples in this thesis, grammatical sentence mostly appears rather than an ungrammatical sentence. Through the discussion, the researcher also found the substandard English words, such as Ain?t, you?d, I?ll, you?re, didn?t, couldn?t, isn?t.

Abstract

English is not a core curriculum for elementary school based on the new Curriculum (2013 Curriculum). However, SDN Kowel 3 Pamekasan, is an elementary school that has implemented the 2013 curriculum since 2013 and has taught English to their students. This research tries to analyze about how does the English teacher formulate the strategy in English teaching-learning and how is the implementation of it while English is not one of Core Curriculum in 2013 Curriculum at the fourth grade of SDN Kowel 3 Pamekasan. This research is qualitative descriptive research. Interview, observation, and documentation were utilized to collect the data. The result shows that the English teacher used the previous curriculum, School-Based Curriculum (SBC), as the basis of the English teaching-learning process when the subject is not in the 2013 curriculum. In this case, the school changes the position of English from an extra curriculum into a local curriculum. Moreover, the English teacher develops the lesson plan from the English material book following School-Based Curriculum format which is different from the lesson plan format of 2013 Curriculum. While the implementation is the English teacher commonly used Audio Lingual Method (ALM) through repetition drill at the beginning of the class.

Abstract

The brain is divided into two nearly symmetrical halves, the right, and the left hemisphere. Left hemisphere handles all of analytical, logical matters, and language skill. On the contrary, art objects such as music, imagination, and colors handled by the right one. This research investigated whether there is a significant difference between right hemisphere dominance students and left one in multiple choice of English test. The researcher used ex-post facto research. The population is 294 of first-grade students. The simple random sampling technique used to select 40 students (20 right hemisphere dominance students and 20 left one). In gaining the data, three instruments have been used namely questionnaire, test, and documentation. The data were analyzed using independent t-test. The result revealed that there is a significant difference between right hemisphere dominance students and left one at the first grade MAN 2 of Pamekasan in multiple choice of English test (2.16 > 2.03; Significance level 5%, df = 35). Left brain dominance students are better in multiple choice of English test because language skill is placed on the left hemisphere. It also notified that differ hemisphere dominance students give different effect to the students? achievement in English testing, especially multiple-choice test.

Abstract

Many students get difficulties in speaking English because of a weak soft skill they have, such as motivation, creativity, and self-confidence. Therefore, lecturers? role in inserting soft skill in teaching speaking is essential because learning success is influenced more by soft skill than Intellectual Quotient. This study discussed kinds of soft skills inserted by lecturers in teaching speaking, the ways of lecturers insert them, and how those soft skills help students speak English. This study used qualitative approach by descriptive research design. The data are obtained from English lecturers and TBI students at the third semester of STAIN Pamekasan, period 2014/2015 by observation, field note, interview, and documentation. The results revealed that there are kinds of soft skills inserted by the lecturers, such as self-perceptions, motivation, perseverance, metacognition, social skill, and creativity. Whereas, the ways lecturers insert them are by using classroom discussion, reward, telling story, teacher talk, ordering students to perform drama, microteaching, asking students to use name tag, and sometimes lecturers use the same way in the next meeting if the previous materials have not finished. Those soft skills contribute to the students? speaking skill, such as making them more communicative, more interactive, and used more various language.

Abstract

Students' different intelligence affect different academic achievement, speaking skill as one of the required skills that have to be mastered by students must also be influenced by students' intelligence. This study was mainly purposed to investigate whether there is a significant difference between interpersonal students and intrapersonal students on their English speaking skills. This study uses Ex-post facto or causal-comparative with a quantitative research approach. The population was 216 students of all third-semester students of English Teaching Learning Program of STAIN Pamekasan, the sample of 50 students (25 interpersonal students and 25 intrapersonal students) were taken away by using stratified random sampling. Two research instruments were utilized. The questionnaire was spread out to identify the students' intelligence, while documentation was used to know the result of the summative test of English speaking skills. The research result reveals there is a significant difference between interpersonal students and intrapersonal students in the third semester of the English Teaching Learning Program of STAIN Pamekasan on their English speaking skills. The t-value of 3.86 is significantly higher than the t-table (significant level 5%) that is only 2.01. (3.86 > 2.01; Level of significance 5%, df = 50). Interpersonal students are better on English speaking skills because they have special characteristics, such as love to interact, have good communication skills, strong empathy, and good sociability. They are usually outgoing and also easily adaptable make them quick to learn.

Abstract

The novel "Totto Chan: The Little Girl at the Window" is a novel in which some parts of its story reflect the concept of education that is unique and different. The concept of education in this novel related to an educational value according to Paulo Freire?s perspective. Therefore, this research is mainly purposed to search about what are the educational values found in "Totto Chan: The Little Girl at the Window"? and how educational values appear in "Totto Chan: The Little Girl at the Window" based on Paulo Freire?s perspective? This research is a qualitative one by using the content analysis method. Two data sources were chosen, the primary data source is the novel its-self and the secondary data are books, literature, official websites, and other relevant materials. In general, the result found 52 educational values contained in the novel, and 28 educational values based on Paulo Freire?s perspective. Those are divided into 6 points: liberating education, pedagogy of the oppressed, dialogic education, the concept of conscientization, contextual education and critical education. Through this research, it is expected that teachers can implement the positive things that exist in this study and in the novels at school and also encourage students? interest in literature.

Abstract

The Holy Qur?an is guidance to live, some of its meaning can be inserted into the lyric of the song, such as Raef?s song lyrics. Three research focuses are proposed, i.e how are the lexical meaning, how are the contextual meanings, and what are the Holy Qur?an values consists of Raef?s song lyric in The Path album. This study is a library. The data sources are Raef?s song lyric of The Path album which consists of 12 lyrics of songs, and the Holy Qur'an values. The finding revealed that in the lexical analysis, the meaning of a word is varied, for example, the keyword of "words" in Peace and Blessing lexically means languages, utterances, promises, signals, and teachings. And contextually, the intended meaning of it is sunnah, then from those meanings, it will relate to the Holy Qur'an value which supports the lyric of song, namely an-Nur (24): 54 which contains the value of Sunnah and the obligation to follow sunnah of Rasulullah, and it relates to the lyric of song when it also talks about the same thing. That kind of findings is also similar to the other analysis in all Raef?s song lyrics of The Path album

Abstract

Comprehending English text is still one of the focuses on the English teaching-learning process in Indonesia. However, students? ability to comprehend English reading text is various. Some theories mentioned that reading comprehension of the students is influenced by students' learning styles. This research is to compare reading comprehension between visual and kinesthetic learners at the eleventh-grade students of SMA Negeri 2 Pamekasan. This study used a quantitative approach with a causal-comparative design. The population of this research was 320 eleventh grade students with the sample was taken were 48 students or 15% of the population. The data were collected using Sensory Learning Style Questionnaire to divide students based on their learning style and Reading Comprehension test to measure students' reading comprehension. The obtained data were analyzed by using the independent t-test to compare the significant difference between visual and kinesthetic learners. The statistical analysis was computed using SPSS 16. The result proved that obtained t-value was lower than t-table with significant 5% and 1% (1.084 < 2.06 and 1.084 < 2.79) which showed that the achievement of reading comprehension of visual students was same as kinesthetic learners at the eleventh-grade students of SMA Negeri 2 Pamekasan
