Abstract

Pain is an unpleasant experience that can be a sensory experience that includes time, space and emotions that can be experi-rienced by every individual. One of the drugs used as an analgesic is paracetamol which is non-steroid anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAID) class of drugs. Afrikan leaves (Vernonia amygdalina) were found to have an analgesic effect or relieve pain due to the presence of flavonoids, tannins and saponins. It can be concluded that the bioactive compounds contained in african leaf ex-tract have an analgesic effect. The analgesic effect is obtained from flavonoids which have activity similar to paracetamol, namely inhibiting the formation of inflammatory mediators through inhibition of the cyclooxygenase enzyme.

Abstract

Periodontal abscess is an infection that is located adjacent to the periodontal pockets and can cause damage to the perodontal li-gament and alveolar bone. One of the gram-positive anaerobic bacteria that play a role in abscess formation is Staphylococcus aureus, and can be inhibited by utilising tamarind fruit (Tamarindus indica L.). This study investigated tamarind fruit pulp ex-tract at concentrations of 10%, 50%, and 100% to inhibit the growth of S.aureus bacteria with true experimental in vitro with post-test only control group design. The treatment group was given 10%, 50%, and 100% tamarind fruit flesh extract. Clinda-mycin as positive control and 96% ethanol as negative control. Bacterial inhibition test on tamarind fruit pulp extract showed strong inhibition response at 10% concentration (13.05±2.21 mm, 50% (28.55±0.78 mm), and 100% (20.21±0.21 mm). It is concluded that tamarind fruit pulp extract can inhibit the growth of S.aureus bacteria.

Abstract

Fiber reinforced composite (FRC) resin can improve color stability. The most commonly used fiber in dentistry is E-glass fiber, but dental E-glass fiber has limitations and is expensive. The composition of non-dental E-glass fiber is almost the same but the concentration is different. E-glass fiber is difficult to adhere to composite resin so it requires silane coupling agent as a binder. The difference in color stability of E-glass fiber non dental reinforced composite with or without the addition of silane coupling agent was studied through quantitative research with laboratory experimental method using one group pretest and posttest de-sign. The samples were FRC plates obtained by purposive sampling method, 13 mm in diameter and 2 mm thick, which were divi-ded into 2 groups of E-glass fiber non dental with silane and without silane. The color stability test was carried out by Us-Vis spectrophotometer whose absorbance value and wavelength were calculated to determine the area value of l*a*b* in each sam-ple. Statistical analysis using independent t-test. Significant differences were found between non-dental E-glass fiber with silane and without silane. It was concluded that non-dental E-glass fiber with silane showed better color stability than without silane.

Abstract

Root canal filling is the most important stage in root canal treatment (RCT). Leakage at ⅓ of the tooth root can be affected by the type of cement, leading to RCT failure. This study analyzed leakage at the filling stage using calcium hydroxide (CaOH)2 and zinc oxide eugenol (ZOE) cements. The experimental laboratory study used samples of 16 maxillary central incisor teeth prepared by conventional techniques, divided into two groups and RCT was performed using the single cone technique. The samples were immersed in india ink for 7x24 hours, decalcified until transparent. The ink penetration depth was evaluated by stereo microscopy. As a result, the Ca(OH)2 cement group had 7 samples with a score of 1 and 1 sample with a score of 2. In the ZOE group, there were 5 samples with a score of 5 and 3 samples with a score of 3. The data were analyzed with an inde-pendent t-test to determine the differences between treatments (p<0.013). It was concluded that there was a significant differ-ence between the two cements, namely Ca(OH)2 cement showed better sealing ability than ZOE.

Abstract

Crowdedteethhave a major negative influence on the dentomaxillary system. In addition toaesthetic concerns, which arethe main motivating factor for requesting dentaltreatment, there areother functionalconsequences that canbe factors favoringthe onset anddevelopment ofperiodontaldisease. This articlereportsthe treatmentofsevere crowding anddeepbite withpremolar extraction.A 20-year-old female presented withsevere crowding of the upper and lower anterior teeth. Thepatient complain- edabout facialaesthetics and convexprofile, andhadboth lower first molars extracted about 2 years ago. There was agenitionof the right upper first premolar, deep bite and anterior crossbite. Clinicalexamination showed a Class I relationship forthe teeth and cephalometric measurementsshowed a Class IIskeletal tendency. The left upper first premolar was extracted for anterior crowding correction andoverbitecorrection. Thespace ofthe missing lower first molar was used for correction oflower crowd- ing.A two-step extraction technique was used to correct the patient's verticalplaneandprofile. It is concludedthat upper first premolar extraction is one of the options in the treatment of crowding. Unilateral extraction treatment can be performed to achieve an aesthetically pleasing and functionally stable occlusion.

Abstract

Orthodontic treatment aims to regulate the growth and development of the jaw and teeth. The temporomandibular joint (TMJ) is a hinge joint that connects the upper and lower jaw bones between the temporal bone and the head of the mandibular con-dyle. Orthodontic treatment of patients with a history of restriction of TMJ movement experienced statistically significant re-sults and reduction of TMJ pain. The results of the analysis of 6 journals stated that orthodontic treatment had a significant re-lationship with temporomandibular joint disorders. Orthodontic treatment can cause TMD such as structural disorders of the TMJ and functional disorders. Orthodontic treatment can also help overcome TMD such as reducing pain in the TMJ and pro-viding balance to the occlusion.

Abstract

Public awareness of the importance of orthodontic treatment to correct malocclusion is increasing. Orthodontic treatment like any other medical treatment can pose a risk to the patient, due to errors that occur during treatment. This literature review aimed to determine the errors that can occur during orthodontic treatment and the risks they can pose to patients. Scientific information relevant to the study topic was collected and synthesized into an article. In general, errors can originate from orthodontic treat-ment, including the type of appliance used, the direction and amount of force applied, the skill of the clinician and the length of treatment. Errors can also originate from the patient, namely biological and behavioral factors of the patient. It is concluded that orthodontic treatment errors and patient factors can cause risks to patients during orthodontic treatment, namely periodontal da-mage, pain, root resorption, tooth devitalization, temporomandibular joint disorders, caries, and enamel damage. A good under-standing of treatment procedures, diagnosis and patient informed consent is needed in order to minimize the risks of orthodon-tic treatment that can occur in patients.

Abstract

Infections in the jawbone present many complications to both doctors and patients. One systemic factor that increases the risk of disorders in the oral cavity is sickle cell anemia (SCA). Patients with SCA also have an increased risk of orthopedic mani-festations such as osteomyelitis. Osteomyelitis features vary in their radiographic appearance, which can be panoramic, peri-apical, and occlusal, or additional modalities. This article reviews the radiographs of osteomyelitis in the oral cavity with risk fac-tors such as SCA, using the literature review method. The step is to collect information from several sources from the literature. It was found that panoramic, periapical, and computed tomography (CT) radiographs are the most commonly used radiographs and are able to describe the characteristics of osteomyelitis in SCA patients specifically. It was concluded that the typical pic-ture of CT examination type is associated bone sequestra which is a typical picture of osteomyelitis with SCA. While on pa-noramic and periapical radiographs a diffuse radiolucent picture and bone resorption are found and other radiographic feat-ures can be found in the form of small radiopaque areas and bone infarcts around the apex of the associated teeth.

Abstract

Herpes zoster is a disorder caused by the varicella zoster virus with the characteristics of multiple, painful and unilateral lesi-ons. This case report aims to describe the management of herpes zoster in preventing postherpetic complications in the elderly. A 64-year-old man complained of blisters on his left face and canker sores on the palate and inner cheek for 1 week ago. Two days earlier accompanied by fever 390C. Extraoral examination revealed a hemorrhagic serous crust on the left face, intraoral examination showed multiple ulcers with erosive lesions on the palate, left buccal mucosa and gingiva. The extraoral and in-traoral lesions are unilateral. The working diagnosis of this case was herpes zoster et left orofacial region. The therapy was gi-ven valacyclovir tablets 800mg 5 times/day, NaCl 0.9% compress on the face, and vitamin B complex with zinc. Improve-ment occurred after 1 week of treatment. Appropriate management of herpes zoster in elderly patient can prevent complica-tions of post herpetic neuralgia that most often occur in the elderly.

Abstract

The treatment of vital pulpotomy in primary teeth is more complex than that of permanent teeth, so dentists are expected to be able to choose the right medicament, so as to improve the pulp healing process and not damage the seeds of permanent teeth. Medications commonly used for vital pulpotomy are mineral trioxide aggregate (MTA), formocresol and calcium hydoxide. This literature review discusses the success rate of MTA, formocresol, and Ca(OH)2 as vital pulpotomy medicaments. In this literature review, articles were collected using Google Scholar and Pubmed with the keywords vital pulpotomy, mineral tri-oxide aggregate, formocresol, and calcium hydroxide with the inclusion criteria being articles published in 2013-2021, availa-able in full-text, and written in both Indonesian and English. It was concluded that the success rate of MTA, formocresol, and Ca(OH)2 as vital pulpotomy medicaments was seen clinically and radiographically, and all three materials had a high success rate. However, MTA can be said to have a higher success rate because clinically and radiographically it does not show failure compared to other medicaments.
