Abstract

Periodontal disease is an inflammatory response due to bacterial infection of the supporting tissues of the teeth. Porphyromonas gingivalis is a gram-negative anaerobic bacterium associated with periodontal disease. An adjunctive therapy to mechanical pe-riodontal therapy is the use of antibiotics, although long-term use can cause some hypersensitivity effects, toxic reactions. Many bacteria are resistant to antibiotics, so in this study Gracilaria extract was chosen as an additional therapy to reduce the effects of resistance to antibiotics. extract as an additional therapy to reduce the effects of such resistance. Gracilaria has carotene con-tent which has very important biological functions as an antioxidant, and immunostimulator that can prevent disease, anti-inflamma-tory, anti-stress, anti-aging, and skin protection from ultraviolet light. ultraviolet rays. Gracilaria also has the ability to capture free radicals. Gracilaria contains antibacterial bioactive compounds, namely alkaloids, flavonoids, and steroids that can inhibit the growth of P.aeruginosa and Staphylococcus. This paper explores the effectiveness of Gracilaria sp in the treatment of periodontitis.

Abstract

To determine the description of oral hygiene and knowledge level and the relationship between knowledge level and oral hygie-ne with periodontal status of diabetes mellitus (DM) patients at Lampa Health Centre, Duampanua, Pinrang. Samples were de-termined based on inclusion criteria, namely outpatients diagnosed with type 1 or 2 DM aged ≥8 years, and willing to become re-search subjects. At the initial stage, knowledge about the relationship between DM and oral health was measured using a question-naire. The implementation of activities began with DHE using leaflets and banner stands, plaque control using disclosing agents and initial therapy in the form of scaling root planing in people with DM who experience periodontal disease. Oral hygiene status was assessed using OHI-S and periodontal disease status was assessed using Periodontal Diseases Index. The relationship between knowledge level and OHI-S and periodontal status was analysed using Kolmogorof Smirnof test (p<0.05). Patients with poor GDS/GDP scores had poor OHI-S status and poor periodontal status. All study subjects had problems in their supporting tissues, 50% gingivitis and 50% periodontitis. It is concluded that there is a relationship between the level of knowledge with OHI-S status and periodontal status in DM patients at Puskesmas Lampa, Duampanua, Pinrang.

Abstract

Impaction occurs due to a mismatch between the size and shape of the teeth and the jaw. Generally, teeth that often experience impaction are posterior teeth, although anterior teeth can also experience impaction, but rarely found. This study was intended to determine the prevalence of tooth impaction on radiographs in the Radiology Department of RSGMP Hasanuddin University in 2023. This descriptive observational study used a total sampling design whose population was all panoramic radiographs of pa-tients with impacted teeth from medical report data in 2023. A total of 530 samples had impaction, 390 (73.5%) third molar im-paction, 50 (9.43%) premolar impaction, and 95 (17.93%) canine impaction. It was concluded that the more common impacted tooth in Unhas RSGMP in 2023 was the lower third molar.

Abstract

Flat ridge condition makes difficult to have a retentive complete denture. This complication can be overcome by the use of com-pound impression material because it can produce denture bearing area moulds. This article discusses flat ridge impression using compound in a case of mandibular edentulus. A 60-year-old man came to the RSGM with complaints of difficulty chewing food due to the loss of all upper and lower jaw teeth and a flat ridge on the lower jaw. The patient wanted to make a comfortable denture. In this case, type 1 compound moulding material was used for the initial moulding. This material is reversible and can be modified to obtain more accurate details. The use of compound materials using the mucocompression moulding technique can print the parts of the lower jaw that move for the expansion of the denture well so that a moulding result is obtained that can provide support for making a denture. It is concluded that the use of compound materials in moulding mandibular edentulous flat ridge can produce a stable and retentive complete denture.

Abstract

This article aims to compare the tensile strength of coated bovine amniotic membrane (BAM) and human amniotic membrane (HAM) to assess the suitability of BAM as an alternative to HAM for periodontal guided tissue regeneration (GTR). Freeze-dried BAM (FDBAM) and freeze-dried HAM (FDHAM) were used as samples. The tensile strength of FDBAM and FDHAM was tested with an elongation rate of 10 mm/min. Five samples of each type of material coated with 2, 4, 6, 8, and 10 layers were tested. Data were statistically analysed (α=0.05). Tensile strength tests showed that FDBAM had consistently higher tensile strength (p<0.05) compared to FDHAM in all layers measured. The increase in tensile strength of the amniotic membrane was not proportional to the increase in number of layers for both FDBAM and FDHAM. The highest tensile strength of FDBAM was found in the 6-layer sample, and the lowest in the 10-layer. The highest tensile strength of FDHAM was found in the 4-layer, and the lowest in the 2-layer sample. It is concluded that FDBAM has a higher tensile strength compared to FDHAM. The tensile strengths of FDBAM and FDHAM fulfil the minimum criteria for GTR membranes. FDBAM can be considered as a replacement for FDHAM as a mem-brane in periodontal GTRs because tensile strength is a very important factor.

Abstract

This case report describes the frenectomy procedure on the maxillary labial frenulum and its effect on the success of diastema closure orthodontic treatment. A 21-year-old male presented to the Periodontia Department of Hasanuddin University Dental and Oral Teaching Hospital for frenectomy. The patient complained of superior labial frenulum extending to palatine, diastema centralis, and was referred for frenectomy with conventional technique. The conventional technique involved engaging the fre-nulum using a hemostat inserted into the vestibule, and incisions were placed on the upper and lower surfaces of the hemostat followed by suturing the wound and closing it with a periodontal pack. It was concluded that frenectomy using the conventional technique was effective in closing the maxillary central diastema.

Abstract

Postoperative surgical removal of large ameloblastoma tumours results in large mandibular defects that can affect the quality of life. This article reports prosthodontic aspects of rehabilitation in patients with rare giant ameloblastoma. After the surgical pro-cedure, prosthodontic treatment was performed by a prosthodontist. An 18-year-old male was referred to the prosthodontics clinic from an oral surgeon and the patient complained of difficulty chewing food due to the loss of almost all mandibular teeth after undergoing surgical removal of ameloblastoma. The patient received prosthodontic treatment with the use of obturators that rehabilitated the defect to improve his quality of life as it could help restore masticatory, speech, and aesthetic functions due to mandibular tooth loss. It was concluded that prosthodontic rehabilitation helped to improve the patient's quality of life.

Abstract

Radicular cysts are one of the most common types of cysts that occur in the jawbone, which in the maxilla, may invade into the sinuses. The CBCT radiographs make it easier for dentists to evaluate the boundaries and extension of the cyst lesion. This case report analyses the expansion of a radicular cyst into the maxillary sinus area causing maxillary sinusitis. A 58-year-old man com-plained of gingival swelling of the left maxilla that occurred in the area of the retained root of tooth 23, and extended to the right maxillary sinus. After CBCT-3D scanning, an osteolytic lesion was found at the periapical area of teeth 22 and 23, which extend-ed to the maxillary alveolar bone and caused perforation at the base of the left maxillary sinus with hyperpigmented appearance along the sinus base on radiographs. The patient underwent cyst enucleation, fistulectomy, sinus washing, and multiple tooth extractions. Biopsy of the lesion showed the character of a radicular cyst. It was concluded that CBCT imaging clearly showed the extension of the maxillary radicular cyst lesion to the maxillary sinus to support an appropriate treatment plan.
