Abstract

Speaking is a means of social interaction. Through language, someone can share ideas and thoughts to the hearer. This interaction process needs an understanding between the speaker and the hearer. The speaker should understand the concept of face in social interaction so that the communication process can run well. The object of this research is George Yule’s concept of face. This concept is about self-image that should be taken into account by the hearer. Face will be constructed differently based on the situations. The analysis uses descriptive qualitative method.  Qualitative method provides a lot of data from the social community. Then, the data are constructed in a theme that has meaning and is easily understood. The knowledge of face concept in social interaction helps us to see hearers’ thought and direction of the talk even though without any words stated.

Abstract

The instructional problem in writing was students’ low skills, especially in expository writing. Even, low writing skills was also influenced by students’ motivation and conventional learning media. Thus, it was necessary to use different instructional media so that students’ writing ability and motivation improved . It was an action research . It used verbal and nonverbal data analysis . Verbal data were in the form of questionnaires, interviews, and questions while the nonverbal data were in the form of an observation sheet containing students’ learning interest, students’ determination of learning, etc . The learning evaluation was taken through tests and the other . The result showed that students’ learning outcomes increased from cycle 1 with an average score of 64.05 in sufficient category to cycle 2 with an average score of 78.05 in good category. The student skill improvement in expository writing increased 14.00. In cycle 1, the level of students’ participation in the activity was 75% and in cycle 2 students’ participation was 96 .43% . The evaluation of teacher performance observation during the learning process in cycle 1 was 65% and in cycle 2 was 95%. In conclusion, the expository writing skills and students’ motivation increased in the learning using blog and constructivism approach .

Abstract

This study aims to determine the influence of (1) reading interest, (2) reading motivation, and (3) reading motivation and interest on short story writing skills. This is a quantitative research and uses correlational analysis. The data collection is analyzed using inferential and descriptive statistics. The result shows there is positive and significant influence of reading interest, reading motivation, reading interest and motivation on short story writing skills.

Abstract

                                                        AbstrakKajian ini berfokus pada masalah unsur-unsur yang berfungsi untuk mengontruksikan teks paragraf argumentasi bahasa Jawa. Hal ini dilakukan dengan tujuan untuk memerikan retorika tekstual dalam argumentasi itu. Retorika tekstual ialah bagaimana penulis mengontruksi teks argumentasi dengan bahasa. Argumentasi merupakan bentuk-bentuk retorika yang digunakan dalam tulisan ilmiah dan berusaha untuk membuktikan kebenaran suatu pokok persoalan. Makalah ini akanmembicarakan retorika tekstual argumentasi bahasa Jawa. Untuk menjabarkan hal itu digunakan metode agih dengan teknik Bagi Unsur Langsung (BUL) dengan teknik ganti, lesap, substitusi, dan baca markah. Pada kajian teks argumentasi ini ditemukan empat prinsip retorika tekstual, yaitu (1) prinsip prosesibilitas, (2) prinsip kejelasan, (3) prinsip ekonomi, dan (4) prinsip ekspresivitas. Keempat prinsip retorika tekstual itu dapat memperlihatkan bahwa paragraf argumerntasi memilikiciri khas yang berbeda dengan paragraf lainnya. Terdeskripsinya keempat prinsip itu dapat bermanfaat bagi pembinaan dan penyuluhan kebahasaan.Kata kunci: wacana, paragraf, argumentasi, retorika tekstua.                                                             AbstractThis research focuses on problems of functional elements that are used to construct texts of Javanese argumentative paragraphs. It is conducted to describe textual rhetoric on those arguments. Textual rhetoric is how writer uses language to construct argumentative texts. Argumentation is rhetoric forms used in scientific writings and it tries to prove the truth on a main problem. This paper will discuss about textual rhetoric of Javanese argumentation. It uses distributive method with Bagi Unsur Langsung (BUL), substitution, omission, and marking reading techniques. The result shows that there are four textual rhetorical principles, (1) processibility,(2) clarity, (3) economy, and (4) expressivity. Those four textual rhetorical principles show that argumentative paragraphs have different characteristics from the others. Those principles are beneficial for language cultivation and elucidation.Keywords: discourse, paragraph, argumentation, textual rhetoric

                                                  AbstrakFungsi utama bahasa adalah sebagai alat komunikasi. Sebagai bahasa kelompok, bahasa berfungsi sebagai alat komunikasi dan interaksi sehari-hari dalam kelompok itu. Pembelajaran bahasa sangat berkaitan erat dengan latar sosial dan budaya. Pembelajaran bahasa tidak hanya menghasilkan sebuah penguasaan pengetahuan, tetapi juga memiliki makna yang berkualitas. Selain itu, bahasa  adalah dasar kebudayaan dan bahasa adalah sebagian kebudayaan. Bahasa, masyarakat, danbudaya merupakan trilogi yang tidak dapat dipisahkan sehingga latar sosial (masyarakat) sangat penting dalam pembelajaran bahasa. Pembelajaran budaya kedua merupakan proses penciptaan makna dalam kontak dengan budaya lain sebagai pengalaman yang melekat pada diri pebelajar dalam pembelajaran lintas budaya. Latar sosial budaya mampu menciptakan kesadaran budaya dalam pembelajaran bahasa kedua. Contextual Teaching and Learning (CTL) ditawarkan sebagai sebuah pendekatan holistik terhadap pendidikan yang dapat digunakan oleh semua siswa, baik yang sangat berbakat maupun siswa yang mengalami kesulitan belajar.Kata kunci: latar sosial dan kultural, pembelajaran bahasa                                                    AbstractThe main function of language is as a means of communication. As a language used in a society, language is used as means of daily communication and interaction in the society. Language learning is closely related tosocial and cultural settings and create not only knowledge acquisition but also qualified meaning. In addition,language is a foundation and a part of a culture. Language, society, and culture are inseparable trylogy that makes social setting (society) so crucial in language learning. Second cultural learning is a process of meaning creation to other cultures as an experience for learners in a cross cultural learning. Social and cultural settingscould create cultural awareness in the second cultural learning. Contextual Teaching and Learning (CTL) is recommended as a holystic approach to education that works for all students, either the talented ones or the ones with learning problems.Key words: social and cultural settings, language learning
