Abstract

This Research and Development (R&D) aimed to develop as a learning media using the assessment from the experts and determine the students' response to the Speaking Textbook in improving speaking ability. It was conducted using the ADDIE model (Analysis, Design, Development, Implementation, and Evaluation. The result obtained from the small group, field test and 5 phase of the ADDIE model. Assessing the reliability of the speaking module showed the following: 1) The Content expert gave percentage 83% which means developed the content gets "Good" category. 2) The Design expert gave percentage 71,4% which means developed the design gets “Good” category. 3) The language expert gave percentage 80% which means developed the language gets “Good” category.4) The field test questionnaires students responses in the second semester of English Department gave percentage 83,235% which means the speaking module gets "Very Positive" category. 5) The small group showed the responses from students were good responses. Based on the result, it presents that the speaking materials based on communicative language teaching (CLT) module can be learned attractively and interestingly.

Abstract

Reading in one of essensial ways in developing our knowledge. Reading involves many complex skills that have to come together in order to the reader to be successful. One of them is Contextual Teaching Learning (CTL). Evaluation is the proses of scoring in the education field or concernig that related to education activity. The main objective of the research is to develop English materials for reading skill based on CTL. The design of this research is developmental research. The researcher uses formative research. The researcher uses readability and implementability to know whether the prototype was applicable or not. Expert review give suggestion to improve the material, and the researcher also uses the information from one-to-one to improve the product. It is to get the second prototype. In small group, the researcher got a good response, but there are some revise needed. It is to get the third prototype. And the last is field test, in this step the researcher still needs to revise the prototype. It is to get the final prototype. It is concluded that CTL can be used to develop reading material. In field test, the researcher got a good response from the students. It means that this prototype is successful, and it can be applied in the first semester of Civil Engineering Students at Muhammadiyah University of Metro.

Abstract

The purpose of this study is to improve students’ vocabulary by using JOOX application. In the Pre-Test result, the students who got score ≥ 13 were 21.88%, otherwise 79.12% were under achievement students. Then, the students who got score ≥ 13 in Post-Test 1 were 81.25% while 19.75% student got score < 13. Furthermore, in Post-Test 2 result all the students (100%) got score ≥ 13. The use of the JOOX application media in teaching and learning process can improve the students’ activity in the classroom, the students’ activities in cycle 1 were categorize into fair category. The students’ activities was 66% (get score 33 of the 50 maximal score). Then, in cycle 2 it could be seen that the students’ activities were categorize into good category. The students’ activities was 80% (get score 40 of the 50 maximal score). It is indicated that the students’ vocabulary mastery could improve significantly after the treatment applied in the teaching and learning process.

Abstract

This research aims to find out what the product of English materials at tenth grade of SMA N 1 Metro and to know the experts’ validation and students’ acceptability on Android-based English materials. The type of this research is Research and Development. The researcher uses ADDIE model. The subjects are 32 students in X IPS 2 class. The data collecting technique is using questionnaire and interview. The data analysis technique is descriptive analysis. The result indicates that (1) the validation of material expert I on android-based English material in content aspect obtained a total score of 94 and aspect of language obtained a total score of 96 is in a very good category. Furthermore, the result of expert II in content aspect obtained a total score of 92 and aspect of language obtained a total score of 88 is in a very good category; (2) the validation of media expert I in view aspect obtained a total score of 93 and aspect of presentation obtained a total score of 100 is in a very good category. Whereas the result of expert II in view aspect obtained a total score of 83 and aspect of presentation obtained a total score of 95 is in a very good category; (3) the students’ responses on android-based English material is in a very good category with the percentage of 96%. It can be concluded that Android-based English material is very easily to use at SMAN 1 Metro. The researcher recommends for the next researcher to develop Android-based English material with other design.

Abstract

This research is to examine the extent of the EFL teachers’ perceive and describe their perceptions on the changes in the 2013 curriculum at junior high schools in Martapura. This research uses a survey design with techniques used to collect data are questionnaires and documentation. In this research, random simple sampling is used and the number of respondents are 17 EFL teachers at junior high schools in Martapura. The result of this research has found that EFL teachers’ indicates positive about the 2013 curriculum. The extent of the EFL teachers’ perceive on the changes in the 2013 curriculum in the highest percentage is EFL teachers’ perceive in learning resources and education facilities that have 92,4%, the medium percentage is student centered learning that have 83,5%, and the low percentage is evaluation and assessment that have 76,8%. Appropriate with the low percentage in evaluation and assessment, it was also found that EFL teachers’ has perception that they still lack with the assessment system in the 2013 curriculum.

Abstract

This article informs how to use Smart Fingers technique in teaching English tenses. The Smart Fingers technique is a new teaching English tenses technique which   will help teachers or students to learn and master 16 English tenses fast due to its simplicity in its implementing. Meanwhile, tense itself is a part of grammar material that is often avoided by several English learners as it is very complicated lesson. In fact, English sentences used in daily activity and especially academic field consist of tenses. Thus, smart fingers technique becomes an alternative technique to overcome that problem. The use of this technique is so simple, just need fingers of hands. This article also discusses the kinds, functions of Smart Fingers and their achievement indicators. There are five kinds of Smart Fingers technique, namely Smart Fingers (SF) ”Memorizing Tenses”, SF “Naming Tenses”, SF “Auxiliary Verbs”, SF “Verbs vs To Be”, SF “Smart Short Tenses”. Each kind of Smart Fingers technique has different functions and achievement indicators.

Abstract

The purpose of this research is to find out teaching method used by teacher in teaching pronunciation and to discover the strength and weakness of the method used in teaching pronunciation to EFL students at SMP Negeri 1 Martapura Timur. The researcher used qualitative descriptive as research design. A teacher and several students were interviewed. It was found that the teacher used Audio-lingual Method to teach pronunciation. The repetition drill as the technique was chosen. Weakness of this repetition technique made students get bored easily. It is not necessary to have sophisticated equipment to teach pronunciation. Teacher as role model for students is also effective.

Abstract

The purpose of the research is to know if the textbook of senior high school 'Pathway to English' textbook is in accordance with syllabus of Curriculum 2013. To accomplish the result of this research, the researcher used descriptive method and content analysis. The researcher used documentary analysis as technique for collecting data and documentary checklist as research tool. There are some steps for describe and analyses the data, those are: the first step is taking the data from “Pathway to English” textbook and syllabus of Curriculum 2013, the second step is to define criteria of speaking material in “Pathway to English” textbook to syllabus of Curriculum 2013, and the last step are matching, describing and analyzing the speaking material in “Pathway to English” textbook to Curriculum 2013 syllabus. The findings of this research find if speaking materials in “Pathway to English” textbook is in accordance with syllabus of Curriculum 2013. “Pathway to English” textbook is still suitable and it can be used by teacher as references in the classroom. Based on the checklist analysis, the calculation of indicator the percentage of similarity between the materials of speaking in “Pathway to English” textbook is 78% and for the difference from putting material and the given vocabulary is 22%.

Abstract

In language teaching, media is one of the tools that very useful to support its successful teaching. In teaching pronunciation, the students need to give additional information how to pronounce words. One of the ways is by using Youtube pronunciation videos. By using Youtube pronunciation videos, the students will get more input and knowledge how to pronounce words from the native. The objective of this research is to know whether there is a significant influence of watching Youtube pronunciation videos towards students’ pronunciation ability. There were two variables in this research, the independent variable (X) was Youtube Pronunciation videos and dependent variable (Y) was the students’ pronunciation ability. The research method used was experimental design. The researchers dealt with two classes, they were an experimental class and a control class. In the experimental class, the researchers used Youtube pronunciation videos, whereas in control class the researchers did not use any media. Each class received the same pre-test and post-test. The population of this research was the second year students of MAN 1 Model Bandar Lampung. The samples of this research were two classes consisting of 90 students. In collecting the data, the researchers used reading aloud test as the instrument.After doing the data analysis, it was found that there is a significant influence of using videos towards students’ pronunciation ability. It can be seen from the result of the T test that T-observed was 5.34615, and the result of T-critical was 1.67. It means that T-observed was higher than T-critical (T-observed> T-critical). Therefore, the hypothesis is accepted. This result means that there is significant influence of watching Youtube pronunciation videos towards students’ pronunciation ability.

Abstract

One of the components in English that is very important in understanding when someone is communicating each other is vocabulary. The vocabulary is used to express the ideas. This research was aimed to find out the influence of using word search ultimate game in learning English for student's vocabulary mastery in the 5th of Muhammadiyah Elementary School of Metro. The research was conducted by quantitative methods. The population of the research consisted of 235 students. The research divided into two groups, those are 24 students as the experimental group and 24 students as the control group, the total of the sample consist of 48 students. The research used cluster random sampling technique and an analysis by using t-test formula. The instruments of this research were pre-test and post-test. The result of analysis was indicated that the value of t obtained (6.961) was higher than that of t table (2.06) at the significance level 0.05 and the significance (0.000) was lower than 0.05). It means that there was significant influence toward student’s vocabulary mastery using word search ultimate game of the fifth grade students of Muhammadiyah Elementary School of Metro.
