Abstract

Shipping and storage of measles serum specimens from fields to the reference laboratory must consider the cold chain in order to maintain the stability of immunoglobulin M (IgM) in serum. Meanwhile, to maintain the cold chain needs special handling. This study aimed to determine the use of filter paper as an alternative in shipping and storage of specimens. This experimental study used measles positive serum received at the National Measles Laboratory Center for Biomedical and Basic Technology of Health from January until March 2011. There were three groups of sample. Each group consisted of 9 specimens. The effects of temperature and storage period on the stability of measles IgM of dried serum spots (DSS) stored in 4ºC and 25ºC for one, three, six, nine, twelve, and five teen days were tested at the National Measles Laboratory Center for Biomedical and Basic Technology of Health from July until December 2011. The stability of measles IgM of DSS that were stored at 4ºC and 25ºC temperature showed no significant difference (p = 0.316) compared to the serums stored at a temperature of 4ºC in the measurements on the third day. Dried serum spots can not be used as sample alternative for detection of measles virus-spesific immunoglobulin M

Abstract

Pharmaceutical care is patient oriented pharmacy practice that required other healthcare to optimize drug therapy. In the management of diabetes mellitus indicators was established as a target in pharmaceutical care. The purpose of this paper is to evaluate pharmaceutical care program, in order to optimize clinical result and quality of life of the patient diabetes mellitus, and to identify indicators in pharmaceutical care program for patient diabetes mellitus as well. Research of the impact of pharmaceutical care program for diabetes mellitus patient have been done in other countries. The results showed that diabetes mellitus indicators in patients managed with pharmaceutical care program were better than those without that program applied. All patients with intervention of pharmaceutical care program can control clinical result such as blood glucose, blood presure, level of HbA1C, HDL, LDL and total cholesterol. The patient’s quality of life with intervention had improved compare to those without intervention. Indicators to evaluate pharmaceutical care program have changed from clinical indicators only to clinical plus quality of life indicators. Pharmaceutical care program was useful to improve clinical result and quality of life of diabetic patient. Quality of life indicators could be added to evaluate pharmaceutical care program. Pharmaceutical care program brings about positif impact for patient, provider, pharmacist and economic aspect as well.

Abstract

Hepatitis remains a serious global health problem because of the potential impact to morbidity and mortality. Prevalence of hepatitis patients in Indonesia either by viral infection or noninfection increases rapidly. The high cost of treatment hepatitis resulted in the switch in the use medicinal plants to cope with this disease. Several types of medicinal plants were proven to be antihepatitis such as meniran, temulawak, mengkudu and pegagan. The objective of this paper is to provide scientific information study of medicinal plants useful as antihepatitis and their development prospect. The method used in this study is to review the relevant scientific articles in international and national journals. Based on reference studies it has been reported that meniran, temulawak, mengkudu and pegagan have a great potential and prospective as antihepatitis drugs. The important challenge in development of medicinal plants is a constant quality as well as, continuous supply of raw materials and effect assured.

Abstract

Complex coacervation system of gelatin solution of 1% and acacia gum of 1% could be developed for encapsulation of bio-active materials. The system had been developed to measured optimum pH of coacervate formation, coaservate recovery, viscosity and density of the solution sistem for predicting its membran thickness on covering the bio-active materials. Results showed that using turbidity measurement, pH of the system could recovery of the coacervate of the sistem was 3,5 and the dried coacervate recoveri was 81±4%. The mixture of gelatin solution of 1% and gum acacia solution of 1% were measured for density and viscosity and the results were 1,0876 ± 0,0045 g/ml and 0,986±0,025 mPa.s, respectively. This physical characteristics could be used for calculating membran thickness for certain bio-active material to be coated

Abstract

There are habits to reuse cooking oil that for main reason of cost saving. Reusing cooking oil might be problem for health. This research aimed to study the number of peroxide number, acid value, free fatty acid, and water content of light and dark brown reused cooking oil. The quality of oil were compared to The National Standard of Indonesia (SNI 01-3741-2002) Edible Oil Quality. Peroxide number was determined by iodometric methods, free fatty acid level and acid value by alkali titration (KOH/NaOH), and water content by gravimetric methods. The oil sample were light and dark brown reused cooking oil and new packaged oil. The oil that, use as standard reference, was new packaged oil. Each oil was analyzed three times. Reuse cooking oil was got from food vendor in Bogor. The results showed that the mean of peroxide number, acid value, free fatty acid level and water content of the black colour of reused cooking oil were 7.89 O2/100g; 1.46 mg KOH/g; 0.64% and 0.61% w/w respectively. The brown colour oil were 5.15 O2/100g; 0.94 mg KOH/g; 0.41% and 0.79% w/w respectively. These light and dark brown reused cooking oils did not comply with SNI 01-3741-2002, therefore they are not suitable to be used for cooking.
