Abstract

This study aims to investigate students’ perception of using canva in writing class. This study used a qualitative descriptive approach and the research adapted questionnaire and also an interview to collect the data with ten students’ at Senior High School Bingin Teluk. The results of this study indicate that the use of Canva in the writing class has a positive impact on the participants. The positive impact is that Canva can increase students' motivation in writing classes, Canva can improve students' abilities in writing classes and Canva can also help students in writing classes. not only the positive impact that students have, but also obstacles in using Canva such as students having to have more time to design programs using Canva, and Canva has a premium account that we should pay for and there are some pictures which will appear and be provided without watermark.

Abstract

This paper aims to discuss vocabulary and cartoon video, and how to teach vocabulary by using cartoon video. Cartoons are designed not only to entertain children, but cartoons can be also used to teach and educate children. In order to find the relationship between cartoon and education, the writer writes a paper which the title is “The Use of Cartoon in Teaching Students Vocabulary”. It has a purpose to help children in learning English, more specifically it aims to improve English vocabulary for children whose age are between seven years old to fourteen years old.The method of the research is quantitative research in design experiment class and control class.The Reseacher could take conclusion that there was a significant between experiment class and control class, The mean of experiment class is greater than the mean of control class ( 77,25> 57,75). on the other hand, the test of hypothesis using t-test formula shows the value of t-test is greater than the value of the t-table. The value of t-test is 3,712 while the value of t-table on t-table in degree of freedom of 38 with level of significant of 0.01 is 2,42. The hypothesis is accepted.Based on the result of this study, it is accepted to be a good information for many teachers espesially English teachers. It is one solution to be used as appropiate method in teaching learning proses. It could be an alternative that could be used in teaching.

Abstract

The research is aimed at exploring the students’ perception on the use of video in learning English language during pandemic. It deploys a qualitative research framework with the instrument used for data collection include, diary and interviews. The participants were a group of English students at a Junior High School in Bogor. The findings show that the students perceived the use of video as an engaging, motivating, and interesting media for their language learning. Their positive perception on the use of video is based on some advantages offered by the video that covers motivation, engagement, flexibility, and operability. The result also affirms video can facilitate students’ language learning during the current Covid-19 pandemic. Therefore, it is suggested that using video is highly recommended in this situation where teaching and learning activities are required to be conducted online.

Abstract

This study investigates in-service English teachers’ voices toward the use of authentic materials in teaching reading and the challenges in using the materials. A narrative inquiry study is employed in which the data were qualitatively collected through interview and documentation process. This study was conducted at one of the Private Junior High Schools in Bogor, Indonesia. An in-service English teacher was chosen as a participant who participated in the process of collecting data through structured interviews by audio recording. The result of this research shows that an in-service English teacher have positive perceptions toward the use of authentic material in teaching reading. Various positive reasons and challenges for the use of authentic materials in the classroom were revealed.

Abstract

This theoretical concept is aimed to investigate how positive discipline is implemented in foreign language classroom and improve students’ self-esteem. As one of forms of classroom management, positive discipline expects long-term discipline planted in the learners’ behavior. There are five principles of positive discipline which can be implemented in language learning; Identifying long-term goals; Providing warmth and structure; Understanding child development; Identifying individual differences; Problem-solving and responding with positive discipline. The implementation of positive discipline which support classroom encouragement and confidence could improve learner’s self-esteem. By implementing the positive discipline, teacher also takes advantages on understanding more about his students’ character. In addition, learner would realize their long-term goal of learning foreign language which motivates them to be more active in the class.

Abstract

The aim of this study is to describe the speech act of advising found in an interactive story telling event in a classroom setting. The speech act of advising is one of the sub type of directive speech act based on Searle’s classification which is different from other subtypes such as suggesting. The data on the speech act were taken first by identifying the interaction occuring as the unit of analysis, then points out the units which show advising. Finally, using the theory of speech act and politeness and considering social and cultural contexts, a description of any aspects related to the speech act of advising was proposed. This study found that advising is not performed directly in story telling. Instead, most of the utterances reflect indirect advices.  Within the framework of intertextuality and the function of story telling in educational context, the writer comes to signify that a storytelling activity enables the teacher performs many kinds of advises delivered in non threatening mode. Comparative study on the effectiveness of indirect advice through story telling and direct advice should be the prospective further study.
