Abstract

The paper discusses the rich philosophical thoughts of Michel Foucault, a 20th century French thinker and intellectual, from his early works (oeuvres) through his later works, which appeared shortly before his death. The writer presents Foucault’s many discourses on different topics and problems that reach its final project in the stylization of the self. This “self” should be built up continually, and this self and life should be re-evaluated or valorized throughout life. It is clear then that there is no stable subject or self. Instead it is always unstable that needs to be valorized on and on. Life is likely a work of art. Foucault also claims that the one who is able to care of him/herself will also be able to care for others.

Memory is also the foundation of identity in both personal and social levels. Collective self image of a society is formed by its collective memory and interpretation of events in the past. However, with the development of information and communication technology, collective memory experiences crisis. It changes to a mere technical information without meaning. Abstract

In building and managing the order of life in a Nation, human being needs to own as well as to implement the ethics value. Ethics is neither a rule nor social norms that must be followed by human being. Instead, it is more emphasizing critically to the orientation of life so that he or she is free from the shackles of inauthentic consciousness. In addition, it must be realized that human being has the nature in building its relationality in order to accomplish the order of life. The implementation is started from the smallest group (family) which eventually will end up and gives full shape to the largest group (Nation). One of the most important components to bring out the relationality is to raise the awareness of the concept “I and Thou”, in which also simultaneously set in motion the virtues of friendship and dialogue. However, it is undeniable that human being also has a tendency to act arbitrarily. Therefore, it needs a collective agreement by habituating each individual to engage in dialogue and act fairly in order to build relationality for the sake of the order of life.

Abstract

Faced with today’s situation, celibacy may be regarded as a less attractive and less meaningful choice of life. Most people choose a way of life that can promise material benefits and give self-gratification in this world. Celibacy as a way of loving radically and uniquely is a response to the difficulty of integrating sexuality in some priests and over the incomplete understanding of sexuality in the present situation. Celibacy is a life choice that shows personal maturity, including growing affective maturity and sexual integration. Sexuality is not understood only in matters relating to the genital organs and actions to gain pleasure. Sexuality is again seen as a gift from God that must be seen as part of the wholeness of the human self to be able to love oneself and others, develop themselves, and support life together. In addition, celibacy is a testimony to meaningful solitude in relation to oneself, others, and God
