Abstract

This qualitative case study explores the experiences of teachers who are responsible for teaching adolescents with intellectual disability about sexuality education at a secondary school in a special education programme in semi-rural Sarawak. The study investigates the teaching approaches to teach cognitive and social-behavioural aspects of sexuality education. It also documents challenges in teaching adolescents with intellectual disability about sexuality education. Findings revealed that cognitively, the adolescents’ comprehension and memory are greatly aided by the use of concrete materials, modelling strategy, and constant repetition; attention and focus in class are obtained by the use of multimedia and storytelling approach; and interestingly, the understanding about sexuality is affected by the language used in content delivery and classroom dialogue. In the social-behavioural aspect, the findings revealed the importance of teachers and students’ comfort when talking about sexuality, mixed gender classes, peer guidance, and the adolescents’ intrapersonal intelligence. All these aspects are key in ensuring that the adolescents are able to reach an understanding and acceptance towards learning about sexuality education. The study also discovered that limitation of teaching materials, the adolescents’ unsupervised usage of the technology, and the sensitivity of sexuality education within the local home setting are among the main challenges faced by the teachers in teaching about sexuality education. The study also uncovered how the adolescents’ limited mental capabilities particularly in the social-behavioural domain has resulted in the adolescents displaying tendencies toward sexually risky behaviours which in turn, exposed them to sexually risky situations.

Abstract

Politeness is an essential part in human communication. It plays a pivotal role in establishing and maintaining good relationships and social harmony. It is reflected by linguistic and non-linguistic behavior through which we indicate that we take others’ feelings of how they should be treated into account. The present study investigated the application of politeness strategies through the linguistic behaviour of twelve Malay English as a second language (MSE) undergraduate students when refusing their higher status interlocutor’s scholarship offer to pursue their studies at an overseas university. Selection of participants was based on a purposive sampling and on the students’ MUET results. The study examined how these students employed politeness strategies as they struggled to find an equilibrium between defending their stance of not accepting the scholarship and at the same time maintaining civility towards a persistent university officer. Data on refusal interactions between the students and the university officer were obtained through an open role-play which were transcribed, classified into semantic refusal strategies, categorized into the types of sequence orders of the strategies and finally classified according to Brown and Levinson’s politeness strategies. The repertoire of MSE refusal strategies reveals positive politeness to be dominant followed by bald-on-record while negative politeness was employed minimally. Using a combination of these three types of politeness, the MSE refusal interactions show variation of politeness ranging from less to more polite. The study revealed that the degree of politeness depend very much on participants’ effort to adapt to the context of situation. The variation of strategies which reflect different degree of politeness generated by the study would be useful as pragmatic input. This input could be utilized by English language teachers to raise pragmatic awareness and to develop their students’ ability to use socially appropriate language for the situation they encounter.

Abstract

Nusaniwe Student Association (IKAMAPENUSA) in Ambon City is an organization formed on the initiative of several educational figures from Negeri Nusaniwe (in Ambon City; the village is referred to as Negeri) with the aim of helping to develop the role of students in developing themselves, both in terms of academics and organizations. Observing the dynamics of plagiarism among students, the Stimulus Community Partnership Program (PKMS) team from Indonesia Christian University (UKIM) of Maluku, Ambon, took the initiative to approach IKAMAPENUSA to discuss issues related to their assignments as students. From the results of the discussion, it appears that there are a lot of problems they face, for example: (1) Lack of direction from teachers and lecturers related to the tasks assigned; (2) Lack of knowledge on how to look for good, well-categorized scientific literature; (3) lack of mastery of paraphrasing techniques; (4) lack of mastery of scientific writing techniques required by universities and schools; (5) Lack of mastery of technology related to quotations and bibliography such as Mendeley. The output of this activity has been published in Mimbar Rakyat News electronic mass media (http://mimbarrakyatnews.com/tim-pkms-ukim-gelar-penulisan-karya-ilmiah-bebas-plagiat-2/), and the video of activities has been uploaded to YouTube channel of UKIM TV (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tg-Cqn0-zao).
