Abstract

Sspatial forestry data are inexorably needed to support the reforestation activities. By using multi-temporal data, reforestation activities can be identified and detected. To accomplish the purpose, this research used Landsat TM data acquired in 1990 and 1995. Remotely sensed data and Geographic Information System (GIS) are methods that can be applied together, to monitor as well as analyze data swiftly and accurately. This research used remotely sensed data to collect land cover features in given area. Geographic Information System is used to capture and to analyse reforestation data. The expected outcome is GIS based forest management strategy making.

Abstract

Planting trials of Shorea spp. have been conducted outside their natural distributional range. Initially it was planted in Haurbentes Experimental Garden (1940) at Jasinga, West Java. This research is intended to get information about growth of all of Shorea's variety that have been planted at 1984, 1988 and 1992 at the location, so we can select the species that suitable to be explored. From each of them, we take four sample plots. The size of the sample plot is 50 m x 50 m or about 0,25 ha. The results of the trial showed that Shorea spp. stand was flowering and giving a good seed harvest.  It was also shown that the biggest growth species is Shorea leprosula Miq., namely 30,65 cm (total height) and 19,88 m (diameter) at 13 years old. The averages of the height and diameter growth are 0,49-0,66 m and 0,48-0,64 cm per 6 month at 9 years old. The species that are suggested to be explored at the location are S. leprosula Miq., S. stenoptera Burck, S. stenoptera Burck forma and S. pinanga Scheff.

Abstract

Biotic component composition of silvofishery using cannal-pond pattern was elucidated in this study. This pattern is the combination between fishpond canal and mangrove vegetation growing in the center.  Sampling method was conducted in the four fish ponds with different variation of mangrove vegetation composition, such as Avicennia marina monoculture, Rhizophora mucronata monoculture, regularly mixed Rhizophora mucronata and Avicennia marina, and randomly mixed Rhizophora mucronata and Avicennia marina.  The research results showed that empang parit (fish pond) having a randomly mixed R. mucronata and A. marina give the most suitable habitat for the terrestrial fauna and aquatic biota as a feeding and breeding areas.

Abstract

Determining the stem volume of a tree, both a standing or felled tree, has long been a chronic problem for foresters, whereas, the need for an accurate estimate of wood volume is becoming more important. The use of Brereton’s formula in Indonesia, nowadays, was based solely on practical consideration in obtaining the data which comprise diameter of the large and small ends of logs; and logs length. However, the relative accuracy of this formula in comparison with other formulae still needs to be tested.  The result of this study by using 499 logs in PT Siak Raya Timber (Riau Province) showed that Centroid and Newton’s formulae have the best performance (seen from bias, accuracy and precision) for estimating the log volume of meranti in Sumatera. Bias of both formulae is around zero and very small, therefore it could be neglected. Huber’s formula tends to underestimate the volume, but it has still better performance than Brereton’s, Smalian’s and Bruce’s formulae. Brereton’s and Smalian’s formulae tend to overestimate the volume, whereas Bruce’s formula tends to underestimate. Deviation of errors for Brereton’s is consistently smaller than Smalian’s, and for Bruce’s is the largest one. But, precision for Brereton’s, Smalian’s and Bruce’s formulae are nearly the same.

Abstract

The research area is an upper watershed and is a land culture for the peasant its self. Then in the plan of land management have to participate the social economic life of community in this area. The alternative plan of land management based on the erosion prediction (A) and to enable erosion (T).  The land management and the techniques of land conservation have to arranged if A value more high then T value. This problem happened because the negative impact of land changes. These values must be manipulated in order to A value less than T value.  The selection of CP value have to less then and equal with the T/RKLS ratio or the CP maximum value. The must of part of area research have A value more high then T value and plan alternative is rice field, dry field and mixed field with system tumpang sari, agro tourism and protection forest areas.

Abstract

Rhizophora apiculata (bakau) and Bruguiera gymnorrhiza (tumu) in are commercial export species of mangrove forest. Both species are the dominant species in mangrove forest at HPH PT. Bina Lestari I (Gaung and Mandah River Forest Complexs), Riau Province.  To ensure a continuous production of wood, detailed knowledge about standing stock obtained through inventories is needed. To facilitate and improve the reliability of inventories, volume table is indispensable.  The results represent mensurational study on 100 purposive selected sample trees, 50 samples for each species. Two models are developed, in which, bakau used a volume/diameter function (tariffs),while the other (tumu) used volume/diameter/height function to estimate the volume of individual trees. The dveloped tariffs of bakau is : V = 0.000107152 D 2.4; while the tariffs of tumu is : V = 0.000134896 D1.61 T, where V is volume from the base of tree up to diameter limit 7 cm outside bark and without root/shrunk; D is Diameter outside bark at 20 cm over the root/shrunk; and H is Total tree height.
