Abstract

Mindset plays a significant role in language learners' success. The present investigation examined the mindsets of Indonesian students with respect to their English language learning proficiency, specifically exploring whether such proficiency is attributable solely to innate talent or whether it requires individual effort. The primary objective of this study is to ascertain whether the mindset of individuals towards learning English is characterized by a growth orientation, which is influenced by effort, or a fixed orientation, which is influenced by talent. Additionally, the study seeks to explore the potential impact of this mindset on the motivation of individuals to study English. A sample of 150 university students from various academic disciplines was surveyed to gather data. The present investigation utilized a mindset survey, which was administered through the completion of a questionnaire and subjected to quantitative analysis. Based on the data, it can be inferred that students hold the belief that exerting effort is of greater significance than possessing innate talent when acquiring proficiency in the English language. This encompasses the capacity to endure critique and surmount obstacles and challenges. The present study characterizes the students’ attitude towards English as exhibiting a positive trend of progressing and developing, which is expected to yield enduring advantages for their English learning. They understand the significance of acquiring English proficiency for future employment opportunities and the diverse range of potential applications in their daily routines.

This research is considered important and feasible to do because it is an effort to convey social criticism to the government and related parties on poverty which is the most common social problem often faced by society. This research is a descriptive qualitative research and applies the sociological theory of literature put forward by Laurenseon and Swingewood (1972) to understand and evaluate literary works by considering social aspects. The finding of this study indicates various types of social problems in the novel stem from one problem, namely poverty, both material and moral poverty.

Abstract

Behavior is a series of causes and effects of the stimulus and response. The response occurs as a result of the given stimulus. In this regard, this study aims to dissect changes in the behavior of the major characters through stimulus and responses that occur in Ayu Utami's novel Saman. This research is a qualitative descriptive study with a literary psychology approach supported by Skinner's theory of behaviorism. According to Skinner, the relationship between stimulus and response occurs through interaction with the environment, which then causes changes in behavior. The data collection technique used in this research is library study. The data analysis technique in this research is descriptive qualitative which begins with data analysis, description of the classification results, and conclusions. The results show that the major characters in this novel experience behavioral changes through the perspective of stimulus and response related to two points of discussion: parental advice and love. In one case heeding parental advice brings good to others and in another disaster; so is love, one runs with risk and the other goes smoothly.

Abstract

This study presents the sociolinguistic study on lexical variations of the agricultural lexicon “plow”. The study aims to elaborate on how the lexical variations are constructed morphologically and also explain how sociolinguistic factors affect those variations. The study is conducted by means of descriptive qualitative method.  The data for this study were extracted from a register of the agricultural corpus that was created by recording and transcribing the farmers’ conversations in Bandung Regency. The findings show that the lexical variations for ‘wuluku’ or “plow” in Bandung Regency are dominated by the agricultural lexicons that are related to agricultural tools and other agricultural activities. Morphologically, in the speakers’ daily utterances, the variations for lexicons “plow” have been used attached to the prefixes di- and N- that function to create a verb. From the sociolinguistics view, it also appears that some variations come from adopting the Indonesian lexicon as the result of bilingual/multilingualism in the community.

Abstract

Literary works are created from human feelings; the emotions are written through words and give aesthetic value to the audience. A short story is a short form of narrative literature that works similarly to a novel but is not longer than a novel and the plot of the story is simpler and it can be finished in one sitting. A short story is not simply built by ‘words’, there are components or elements that build the story until the end. Recognizing and identifying the structure of a short story is important; it is one of the ways to show appreciation for the literature and help people understand the implied meaning in it. In this article, the findings are conducted through intrinsic elements analysis of the selected short story entitled “The Oval Portrait” by Edgar Alan Poe. The story is analyzed in digital form and it is taken from a website on the internet. The descriptive qualitative method is used in the article to help interpret the elements found in the story. The results show that there are four significant intrinsic elements in the short story: plot, character, setting and narrative perspective.
