Abstract

Although many scholars have conducted studies on Language Learning Strategies (LLS) around the world, this issue is still new in the context of English for Medical Purposes (EMP), especially as used by Indonesian pharmacy students. Further, a majority of those previous studies have been conducted using exclusively quantitative research. In response to these empirical and methodological gaps, the current research adopts a qualitative case study to examine the LLS used by Indonesian pharmacy students, as guided by Oxford’s (1990) LLS theory. This study utilized in-depth interviews to gather information from participants. The thematic analysis of the semi-structured interviews presented five major strategies used by learners: engaging in social interaction, enriching their vocabulary, using web based language learning, practicing through online platforms, and employing fun learning. Findings demonstrate that most of their learning strategies involve employing online platforms.

Abstract

This article tried to shed some light on how a radiology resident experienced challenges in using English during his study. Employing narrative inquiry, the data were collected from semi-structured interviews with a radiology resident currently studying at a state university in Indonesia. Meaningful experiences and insights were highlighted and elaborated. They were also discussed and corresponded with previous studies or existing theories. Understanding English textbooks with unfamiliar words made him spend longer time to understand English written materials. He was also required to publish articles in reputable journals and present papers in scientific forums. Meanwhile, he didn't have enough time due to his busy schedule at the hospital. He pointed out that basic English knowledge might helpful in the beginning, but once it got into specialty field of radiology there were many new terms to learn. Besides, willingness to learn English with fellow residents and from supporting tools were essential for success. He found some online tools very beneficial to make his work much easier and faster. However, those tools were still limited in some aspects and face-to-face learning activity was still needed. It implies the need for ESP learning design for busy residents which accommodates digital tools optimization and practical academic purposes.

Virtual Flipped Classroom (VFC) is a learning model that is suitable to be applied during the Covid-19 pandemic where the learning activities are mostly conducted online. The VFC in this study combines synchronous and asynchronous learning by using Schoology as the Learning Management System (LMS) and Zoom as the means to facilitate direct interaction between the lecturer and the students. This model was implemented to improve the student's motivation in learning English even in the pandemic situation. The objective of this study is to investigate the implementation of the VFC learning model to improve students’ motivation to learn. It is a qualitative study conducting action research. The participants were 47 students. The data were gathered by observation, sharing questionnaires, and interviews. The data were analyzed qualitatively, while the statistical data were used to support the qualitative data. The results showed that most of the students were motivated to learn English even though it was during the situation of pandemic Covid-19. They said that this model improves the students’ creativity, autonomous learning, and responsibility to have a self-learning process that motivated them in learning English

Abstract

Designing an English Syllabus for architecture students is important to match what they are studying at the university and their future job later. Through the syllabus, lecturers are aware of the mapping between learning outcomes, materials, teaching methods, and assessment and most importantly what students need in the future. English instruction for architecture students is included as English for Specific Purposes. In this circumstance, the lecturers must provide students with the students needs in their field, as outlined in the syllabus. To meet these requirements, the researchers conducted a Research and Development to develop an English Syllabus for Architecture students adapted from Borg and Gall (2003) including (1) needs analysis, (2) writing the product, (3) validating the product, (4) revising the product and (5) final product. Meanwhile, Language Program Development (LPD) by Yalden (1987) is chosen as the model of syllabus development. Thirty three architecture students, three architecture lecturers, and three architecture professional workers as alumni and stakeholder were involved. They were given a questionnaire, an interview, and a validation sheet to collect and triangulate the data. Then, the syllabus was developed, validated, and revised. The results showed that the syllabus of English for Architecture Students has been developed as an integrated syllabus, and it is feasible to use.

Abstract

The use of technology in education plays a vital role in language assessment. The change in educational adjustment during the COVID-19 period requires teachers to use technology in learning. The teachers need to know the effect of students' achievement and students' perceptions in using online assessment tools. This research aimed to investigate the students' improvement of reading comprehension and students' perception of Socrative as an online formative assessment. This study applied a quasi-experimental design and a closed questionnaire to collect data. Two classes consisted of 32 students (16 students in the control class; 16 students in the experimental class) who participated in this study in SMA Negeri 1 Cepiring, Central Java, Indonesia. The collected data were then analyzed quantitatively using SPSS 23. The result showed that Socrative effectively improves the students' reading comprehension. Socrative is effective as an alternative online formative assessment in improving the students' reading comprehension compared to the paper-based formative assessment. Another result revealed positive perceptions of Socrative as an online formative assessment for improving students' reading comprehension. They claimed that Socrative brings a new atmosphere and innovative formative assessment process that helps improve students' reading comprehension. For facts, Socrative can be considered as an innovative and effective online formative assessment that is worthed to apply by the english teachers or educators.

Abstract

This study focuses on Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono's speech, the President of Indonesia from 2004 – 2014, who gave a speech about wire-tapping. This research project chooses this speech because, in recent days, wire-tapping, which Australia does, is famous. Moreover, the president at that time, Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono, was one of the wire-tapped victims. It was hot news for Indonesian at that time. On November 2013, SBY gave a speech about his action regarding this wiretapping. Thus, this paper analyzes the commissive speech act and its function. To explain the text clearly, a pragmatic analysis will be employed. This approach is used because the study intends to see the function of commissive speech acts beyond the text; therefore, some information will be scientifically proved regarding the act and its functions. This analysis is based on (Searle, 1969). The result of the study is expected to reveal the aforementioned intended information.
