Abstract

The need for education is increasing and getting more complex along the time for it is a crucial need to prepare better human resources. Currently, higher education is attended by adult learners who are not only study but also work in the industry since the competition in the workplace is getting harder in this globalization era which implicitly requires English proficiency of the workers. Those who work while study must have a motivation either intrinsic or extrinsic to pursue higher education. Thus, this study aims to investigate the effect of academic motivation on RPL program students’ English proficiency test score. This study employed a descriptive quantitative method involving 27 RPL program students majoring in Pharmacy. Data obtained from the Academic Motivation Scale and students’ TOEIC scores were analyzed quantitatively using simple linear regression technique with the help of SPSS 22.0. This study found that even though the data were normal and linear, academic motivation had no effect on the students’ English proficiency test scores. This might happen because there are way more complex factors that influence academic achievement or academic performance in the results of English proficiency test.

Abstract

In this digital era, the emergence of technology for language instruction is unquestionable. Technology helps students learn a target language more quickly, easily, and happily than traditional methods. The non-English department requires extra inspiration, motivation, and a unique approach. As an ICT platform, Padlet is regarded as a creative medium for English learning. This study provides light on how the padlet application can be used to assist and motivate non-English Department students to learn English. This study utilized a quantitative methodology with a sample of 38 people. These participants were all first-year non-English Department Mandailing Natal, STAIN Mandailing Natal Sumatera Utara. The PIAUD (early childhood Islamic education) department had 19 participants, while the Perbankan Syariah (Islamic banking) department had 19 students. For data collection, the researcher utilized a questionnaire. The questionnaires collect baseline information regarding the use of padlet as an innovative medium for English learning. This study found that the majority of students (80%) believe padlet to be a suitable and dynamic medium for learning English, and students are motivated to study English. Abstract

This study tells about the story as an English lecturer of non-English program at STAI Darul Ulum Kandangan. This study aims to investigate the challenges of becoming an English lecturer of non-English program in private institution and strategies in facing these challenges when the writer becomes an English lecturer. The study uses qualitative research in the form of autobiography narrative inquiry. This study shows that there are many challenges being an English lecturer in a private institution that are the challenges before entering to the classroom such as making preparation of a lesson plan for one semester, material and media, in the classroom such as facing the various students, and outside of the classroom such as doing research and dedicating him/herself for the society and the strategies that the writer used in solving these challenges. I hope that this study will be a good consideration for the next lecturer in the future.
