Abstract

This study is a test of Confucian social learning theory’s ability to influence negative behavioral outcomes among young people. Material relating to learning from different social environments and the attendant behavioral outcomes was filtered out of an assortment of Confucian texts, forming a limited Confucian social learning theory. Gang activity variables, representing levels of learned immorality within a community, from the NLSY97, were tested by delinquency and substance use outcome variables. The data was attained from the initial wave of responses from the NLSY97, with a sample of 8,985 people from the United States between the ages of 12-16. Confucian theory was supported by this examination, even after controlling for several variables including gender, ethnicity, age, household income, parent education, etc. The more gang activity (or immorality) within an environment, the greater the probability that one will be delinquent and engage in substance use. The more gang activity (or immorality) among close relatives or friends (people who are imitated or in near proximity), the greater the probability that one will be delinquent and engage in substance use. The more days gunshots are heard in a neighborhood per week (or serious immorality within a neighborhood), the greater the probability that one will be delinquent. This study attempts to bridge the gap between Confucian theory and modern criminological data, adding support to Confucian social learning theory.

Abstract

This research study concentrates on the insight of students & teachers about code-switching at the intermediate level in Pakistan. It is evident that Pakistani classrooms are culturally diverse & teachers used to practice from one language to another to enable their students to stand on their toes. This research corroborated through the qualitative method that code-switching is an ultra-practical technique for mixed ability students at intermediate level. Code-switching not only takes place among students but also among educators to unclog the learning process. Nonetheless, not many have looked at it from the students' perspective in response to what they think about their teacher’s code-switching in Pakistan. Therefore, the researcher took this opportunity to look into pupils' insight about code-switching. The semi- structured interview was collected from five intermediate students & five lecturers of a well-known private college in Karachi, Pakistan. The findings of the study indicate that students show a keen interest in learning the concepts when the teacher does code-switching during his lecture. Thus, this study suggests that code-switching is an effective teaching strategy when teaching intermediate students in Pakistani scenarios.

Abstract

This work endeavours to examine the notion of public sphere as a preamble to the idea of public discourse and the inherent role of public deliberations within democratic societies. It also intends to probe as to how the need of civil society emerged within public sphere. Or, what can be the reasons that have warranted the shift of civil society from private to public and the kind of wide-ranging implications in such a shift? On the outset, this work will seek to understand the notion of public sphere (mode of Democracy) as originally conceived within socio-political conditions which influenced the processes of public opinion formation. Such an understanding of public sphere will be helpful to develop the changing notion of public sphere and civil society which is not merely limited to neo-liberal tradition. Consequently, this work also intends to analyze certain other relevant concepts such as rationality, radical form of democratic attitude, autonomy, freedom, human rights etc where public sphere has become an act of agent as discursive discourse and are related to the idea of civil society through the history of ideas in the philosophical writings of Jurgen Habermas.

Abstract

The role of diaspora for a long time now has been seen from a negative perspective. They are usually seen as sponsors of conflict and terrorist activities in their homeland. However, there is a growing recognition that sees diaspora groups in a more positive light, that is playing a vital role in national development, integration, and peacebuilding. The paper aims to examine the role of the Nigerian diaspora in peacebuilding processes in Nigeria. Basing itself within the theoretical framework of transnationalism, the paper finds that they play certain roles of lobbying and advocacy, network and partnership, discussion and awareness, conflict mediation and negotiation, remittances, investment, and social development. However, playing these roles have become very daunting due to challenges such as lack of adequate fund, poor communication, lack of voting rights, fragmentation inter alia. The paper concludes that diaspora can contribute effectively to the peacebuilding of the nation so long as they maintain constant contact with their home country and recommended that peacebuilding of any nation is a national responsibility for all its citizens, home and abroad.  The government must create a safe, peaceful, and conducive environment for an effective and diaspora involvement in all peacebuilding processes of the nation.

Abstract

The perception of Muslims and Islam has changed after the attacks on the World Trade Center on September 11th 2001. Muslims have been projected as essential and natural-born terrorists. Thus, authors have taken this projection and reflected it into their works. John Updike, in his novel Terrorist, has done the same. He has portrayed two characters, a Muslim and a Jew. The contrast between the two characters reinforces the Islamophobic concerns of Western audience, in general, and ,American audience, in particular. Through lexical choices, narration technique, motifs and symbolism, Updike manages to further cast away the Muslim character from his society. Therefore, this research paper examines the Islamophobic, Orientalist aspects represented in Updike's Terrorist, through the comparison made between the .Egyptian-American, Muslim Ahmad, and the American, Jewish Levy.

Abstract

Theatre and its appurtenances can project events, problems and issues of society. Its hegemony consists in performances and varied possibilities of expression with great propensity to awaken social consciousness stimulate emotions, and provide certain 'experiences' to invent a 'new' future. This paper takes a look at one of such experiences through a critical appraisal of the stage performance of Ahmed Yerima's Trials of Oba Ovonramwen as presented at the Chinua Achebe Arts Theatre, University of Calabar. Invoking Elizabeth Wessling’s Writing History as a Prophet, this paper argues that the political perspective of the narrator or writer conditions the many versions of history. The politics and poetics of performance as established by Augusto Boal in many of his works suggest that history need not be written by the oppressor alone but can be subject to the re-writing and re-interpretation of the “vanquished”. In the case of Ahmed Yerima’s Trials of Oba Ovonramwen, the interpretation of history is both a creative and critical process in which the act of narration itself becomes a “symbolic” one through which past misrepresentations can be subject to critiques and re-readings. In addition to revisiting the version of this episode of “British Punitive Expedition” to the Benin Kingdom in 1897, this paper submits that through performance the oppressed can not only recuperate his/her history but also re-inscribe the correct(ed) version into the annals of global politics and archival repository.

Abstract

Over the past decade, and particularly since the September 11th terrorist attack in the United State, the Muslim community in most parts of the world has experienced an increased level of social and religious scrutiny. This unfortunate incident has fundamentally changed the way the mostly dominated Muslim society views Muslims, especially Muslim women who wear the veil or hijab in public. Muslim women have experienced various instances of discrimination including people trying to remove their hijab, and/or name-calling. A unique aspect of Muslim women in Nigeria is that they not only confront the stigma of gender, race, ethnicity, and religion but that which is attached to Islamic dress as well. Despite some of these problems, however, the experiences of Muslim women all over the world remain one of the least researched topics in sociology. The purpose of this work is to explore the controversies surrounding the hijab in Nigeria.
