Abstract

Vegetables and fruit consumption of Indonesian population increased from 70 kcal/ capita/day in 1999 to 95 kcal/capitalday in 2007. That covered only about 58% in 1999, and 79% in 2007, of 120 kcal/capitalday minimum daily requirement. Therefore some efforts are needed to increase people~ vegetables and fruits consumption, according to Desirable Dietary Pattern. This paper aims to explain the pattern and behaviour of vegetable and fruit consumption in Indonesia and to explore understanding on knowledge and attitudes underlying that pattern and behaviour. The effort needed to increase the vegetables and fruit consumption includes not only infrastructures development to increase availability of vegetables and fruit, but also some efforts to increase people knowledge and awareness on the importance of vegetables and fruit consumption, by conducting intensive socialization and promotion. Analysis in this paper is based on secondary macro data from National Social Economic Survey (Susenas) and also primary (micro) data collected during a series of case studies conducted in Lampung and East Nusa Tenggara (N'IT) provinces, in 2003 to 2006 and further in depth study in 2008.Keyword: Vegetable, fruit, consumption, balanced dietary intake, knowledge and practice.

Abstract

Although SBY-JK's government has been sharpern in responding to the demand for basic education, nevertherless, the utilization of schooVmadrasah's autonomy for accummating money from the community as an in-put, mostly in secondary level, was lacking in accountability and public political participation and tending to excarcerbate social gap in education. Therefore, issues on out-put, public accountability and widening the chance of those who have not enough financial supports are becoming great challanges in the future. Accordingly, government's policy on these issues need to be delivered through an eduquate system.

Abstract

Local elections (pilkada) have become a political phenomenon which presumably may impact other sectors, including the employment and labour sector. This sector is one of the attractive commodities to be sold by the head of government, thus vulnerable to the interests of certain parties. Economic rationale is all too often used by the electoral candidate through promises to provide employment, and making it easier to attract sympathy from the unemployed. This paper presents the results of the study about the impact of the election on the employment transition. The analysed impact is the change in the employment sector one year before the election (t-1) until the year in which election was hold (t). This study analyzes the 2010 population census data with a multinomial logit (MNL) analysis approach. Empirical results show that district elections have a positive and significant effect on the transition from unemployment to working in the informal and formal sectors. While individuals who have previously worked in the formal sector tend to survive in the sector. On the other hand, it turns out that the district elections did not have a significant impact on individuals who previously worked in the informal sector

Abstract

Government, international agencies, civic society, and media organizations in Indonesia have communicated climate change to people. The examples are communication campaigns focusing on “green” activities, such as bike to work, car-free days, and energy-efficient buildings. One simple question arises in the practice: could these types of communication reach and provide benefits for the most vulnerable group? This paper offers an overview of urban poor audience needs of information, particularly on what media they use, who they talk to and trust, and how they would like Information delivered to them. As an exercise in crafting messages, women in urban poor will be put as the priority audience. This group falls into the struggling segment (41%). They are experiencing the most impact and cannot take much action. The struggling is willing to make changes, but lack of information and support prevents them from taking action. By understanding this sort of information, it will support delivering effective climate change adaptation messages. The methods included in this research are in-depth interviews, focus group discussion, and survey to 928 urban poor in Indonesia.

Abstract

The coastal areas of Indonesia are rich of natural resources. However, the resources have not been utilized optimally due to several factors, including the low quality of human resources. People who live in coastal areas generally live with low economic conditions as indicated by high incidence of poverty in this region. The economic activity of population who lives in coastal areas, particularly fishermen, depends on the utilization of the natural resources with low technology and limitation of capital. To improve the quality of human resources and reduce poverty in coastal areas, various community empowerment programs have been conducted. This article aims to examine the achievement of community empowerment programs and its challenge to achieve the program goals in Mapur Island, one of coastal area in Bintan Regency. The data used for this study are baseline studies of socio-economic aspects of coral reefs in Mapur Village conducted by PPK-LIPI in 2005 and 2015. The results shows that after a decade of community development programs implemented in the island of Mapur, the economic conditions of the population has improved as indicated by the increase of household income. Sources of income for the population also become more varying since economic opportunities open up more in the field of trade, services and transportation as a result of the development programs in coastal areas. However, the condition of human resources as indicated by educational level has not achieved the expected results. The education level of the population does not show significant changes over a decade. School dropout rates are quite high and the majority of the population only completed elementary school.

Abstract

This article discusses temporary migrants and its impact on slums area in Surabaya. The influx of temporary migrants to Surabaya is more likely to be regarded as negative, instead of positive impacts. This is because tempora1y migrants mostly engage in the informal sector and live in slums and squatters. Most tempora1y migranrs come to Surabaya in search of work to improve their life. They tend to ignore the regulation of population administration (especially related to identity C(lrd oftemporwy population in the city, namely KIPEM) as well as settlement regulation (live in squatters). The influx of temporary migrcmts to slums and squatters is a reality that cannot be ignored To prohibit theft ow of temporary migrants coming to the city through 'close polic,y' is difficult to be established, because the policy opposed to human rights. Therefore, the policy needed is to give them a room the city. However, the city government has to implement the population and settlement regulation strictly and provide them with easily access to public facilities.Keyword: Population mobility, Temporary migrant, Slum and squatter, Population regristration

Abstract

Households should small and but financially strong, especially to deal with a crisis where most families face a reduction in income but relatively constant expenditure. To maintain the standard of living, they need a buffer, measured from net wealth, i.e. total value of assets deducted by debts. There is no justification for how small the family size should be. For most households, higher net wealth is achieved when they have smaller household size, while only the poorest and richest households can get benefits from additional household members. However, we should also aware of the pseudo-increase of net wealth, i.e. households obtain an increasing net wealth because of additional household members but unable to push them to higher decile.

Abstract

In the Province of East Java, the agricultural sector contributes the largest in employment, while its contribution to GDP is the lowest. On the other hand, the processing industry sector contributes the lowest in employment but its contribution to GDP is higher than the agricultural sector. Thereby it is important to study the productivity of both sectors. This study aims to examine the effect of sectoral attractiveness, individual characteristics and suitability ofjob options on the productivity of workers in the agricultural sector and manufacturing industry in East Java. Analysis of the data using a structural equation model (Structural Equation Modeling/SEM) and AMOS (Structural Analysis of Moment) application program. The study shows that the sectoral attractiveness and individual characteristics significantly influence the productivity of workers in both agriculture and manufacturing industry. But as an intermediate variable, the suitability ofjob options has no significant effect on workers' productivity. Thus, the effects of- sectoral attractiveness and individual characteristics on - workers productivity are direct. Keywords: the sectoral attractiveness, individual characteristics, suitability of job options, and labor productivity.
