Abstract

This paper tried to know the different forms of violence against children during the Corona pandemic in Bangladesh from 2020 to mid-2021. As we have already experienced this catastrophic and lives losing pandemic situation across the world wherein the people of Bangladesh have been uniquely facing this live losing situation since 2020. World Health Organization has warned people to adopt different precautionary measures like 20-second hand washing, wearing a mask, maintaining physical and social distance, isolation, quarantine, taking immediate treatment, and vaccination. The real situation is that many countries have failed to take these measures and lost a huge number of lives. In spite of those situations, many developed countries have taken precautionary measures to prevent mass transmission of the Covid-19 virus. But unfortunately, many socio-economic problems like violence against children and women have been aroused during this pandemic situation while governments have given more concentration on Covid-19 prevention, e.g., isolation, quarantine, awareness of social measures, and vaccination. However, this paper found that various types of violence have increased during this pandemic situation, such as domestic violence against children, movement of the children, and domestic corporal violence. Moreover, this paper found weaknesses in the existing legal protections for children to prevent violence against children.

Abstract

Non-native English speakers, venturing abroad to work as English teachers, have drastically grown in number. In the United Arab Emirates, a country that regards English as a vital aspect of progress and sustainability and a home to more than 200 nationalities, Filipino and Indian teachers have found their platform to practice their profession, while facing the reality that such a country openly prefers to hire native speakers over non-native ones. Hence, this study was conducted to explore the lived experiences of 12 non-native English speakers (six Filipinos and six Indians) in the context of working as English language teachers in the UAE. Responses, collected through in-depth interviews, were analyzed to shed light on the overarching question. Findings revealed that informants came to the UAE to earn a bigger salary, grow personally and professionally, and enhance their communication skills. Furthermore, issues and challenges experienced by these teachers were clustered into personal matters (homesickness, new environment adjustments, and language barriers) and professional matters (preference for native speakers, curriculum adjustment, classroom environment, and teacher-parent connection). Data also unraveled the coping mechanisms of the informants: recalling motivations, building connections, utilizing various teaching approaches, and practicing cultural sensitivity. Finally, this study reflected the insights of the teachers, categorized in themes of unlimited learning, native vs. non-native speakers’ salary difference, uninterested learners, and the importance of understanding the work contract. Based on the findings, implications on administrative and pedagogical practices were explicated, leading to recommendations for future research on the phenomenon of teacher migration.

Abstract

Previous studies on computer-mediated communication have investigated the use of WhatsApp groups for health education, health communication, and behavior change, but no empirical study had documented the experiences of Cesarean Section (CS) mothers on their use of WhatsApp groups for health education, information seeking and postpartum healing. This study identifies the post-CS goals of mothers who joined Csection Mum Community WhatsApp group, examines the extent to which the group’s activities satisfied those goals, investigates why they felt safe disclosing their personal health information in the group and explores the role of interpersonal empathic communication on their postpartum healing. Using Online Focus Group Discussion (OFGD) to collect data from twenty-seven CS mothers, and guided by some propositions of uses and gratifications, social penetration theories, and empathic model, the findings revealed that the WhatsApp group satisfied the mothers’ informational, educational, experiential learning and social support needs. Their affinity with the group’s activities influenced their spontaneous self-disclosure in the group. It was also found that interpersonal empathic communication improved the postpartum depression healing process of the mothers. It, therefore, recommends that hospitals (that operate on patients) empower adult mental health nurses or clinical psychiatrists to engage CS mothers and their caregivers (family members, spouses, etc.) in psycho-education, especially empathic communication, before discharging the mothers.

Abstract

Lesbian is one of the global issues in gender relations and sexual relations. On the one hand, it threatens the existence of social order, and on the other, it becomes a space for human rights struggle for the homosexual community. Therefore, this research aims to determine the construction process of the lesbian community in Kendari City. This research uses a qualitative descriptive method with data collection techniques, namely interviews and documentation. The study showed that lesbian behavior in Kendari City did not occur naturally but resulted from social construction in three moments: externalization, objectivation, and internalization. The moment of externalization is expressed mentally and physically in the form of homosexual relationships with fellow women with the same sexual orientation. The expression of lesbians in everyday life then experiences habituation in the form of community as an objective social world. Furthermore, the re-absorption (internalization) of the objective world into subjective consciousness through social media (Facebook) and personal socialization.

Abstract

Most Filipinos spend their time learning the English language in schools, given the mandate of the government. Hence, English is used as a medium of instruction in many higher education institutions in the Philippines. Despite its prevalence, many Filipinos, including college students, are still anxious when utilizing it in communication. In research undertakings, little is being discussed about this type of language anxiety in the Philippine context. To bridge this research gap, the aim of this study, hence, is to explore the English language anxiety among Filipino college students in state universities and colleges in Metro Manila, Philippines. Data were obtained from 37 college students through purposive sampling. Then, the data were analyzed using thematic analysis. Four themes emerged, namely: (1) lack of language skills, (2) personal insecurities, (3) judgment of others, and (4) negative influences on performance and being. Students are recommended to work on their problems related to English language skills and make ways to improve such as through practicing, listening open-mindedly to constructive criticism, and building self-esteem. College teachers, meanwhile, are advised to foster a psychologically safe atmosphere where mistakes are seen as a learning opportunity, refrain from using deprecating comments to students, and undertake planned and meaningful class sessions.

Abstract

The outbreak of the virus during this pandemic gave so many struggles in the different countries around the world which also shook the world economy. Universities are also affected since the outbreak started which brought changes to the way students live while they are pursuing their degrees in college. This study explored the psychological problems encountered by college students amid the pandemic. The study used descriptive phenomenology as its research design. The researcher invited nine students to participate in the study using purposive sampling. As part of the ethical considerations, the researcher used code names to hide the identity of the participants. Colazzi’s method of analysis was used by the researcher to identify the themes. This study revealed four themes related to students’ psychological problems which are Intense Power of Stress and Pressure, Battling with the spirits of Anxiety and Depression, Living in the Shadow of Death, and Fear of Uncertainty in Life. Based on the findings, the researcher recommends that the universities must actively guide their students by having mental health webinars, and most especially the guidance counselors must follow up with those students who are struggling mentally. The instructors must also give the utmost leniency to help the students cope with the adversities brought by this pandemic. Future researchers may also consider studying the challenges of students academically and their coping mechanisms.

Abstract

Interest will make someone selective in responding to or living a message. People will only pay attention to stimuli that have to do with their interests. The executive and legislative interests are power. The problem raised is that the achievement of power can be achieved by establishing effective communication. Collapsed communication between the executive and the legislature tends to lead to conflicts in the economy and politics. Based on this phenomenon, the author raises the issue of the occurrence of political economy communication conflicts between the two regional institutions. This research was conducted in Aceh, the approach used was qualitative using objective-subjective barrier theory, conflict theory, communication, communication conflict, and political economy. This study aims to determine the problems that arise in the political economy conflict. This research was conducted using observation and interview techniques. Furthermore, the data were analyzed descriptively. The results of this study are: prejudice is a factor in communication conflict. The lack of transparency and the governor's reluctance to sit down with members of the Aceh legislature to discuss regional and financial policies are considered by the council as a strategy by the governor to take advantage of the unilateral use of the budget.

Abstract

This article aims to get in-depth information regarding the condition of capitalization and social formation in the Grand Mall Maros. This research uses a descriptive qualitative approach to exploring information about the involvement of all stakeholders in the development and construction of Grand Mall Maros. The results showed that building the basic structure of social cohesion to prevent social conflicts is a source of unequal control of urban space. This social reality must still be followed by an improvement in the quality of social life, especially for local communities, which ideally becomes a subordination of social formations in urban space.
