Abstract

Angle is one of the concepts from the field of geometry that is important for students to learn because there are basic concepts of geometry that can be used in other fields of mathematics and everyday life. Students still experience learning obstacles in angle concepts. This study aimed to identify learning obstacles experienced by Islamic junior high school students in angle concepts. The research method used is a qualitative method with a phenomenological approach. The samples in this study were 8-grade students and mathematics teachers from one of the Islamic junior high schools in Bandung district, Indonesia. The results show that students experience learning obstacles, and can be concluded as follows, (1) instrumental ontogenic obstacles, caused by students not being used to facing difficult problems; (2) conceptsual ontogenic obstacles, caused by low mastery of prerequisite concepts; (3) psychological ontogenic obstacles, caused by low student interest in learning; (4) epistemological obstacles, caused by low mastery of angle concepts.

Abstract

This study aimed to determine the effectiveness of using the STEM approach in learning direct electric circuits to achieve high school students' scientific and practical thinking skills. This research is a quasi-experimental method. This study used two class groups, namely the experimental class and the control class, with the experimental class being the class group that received the STEM learning treatment. In contrast, the control class was the class group that only received the immediate learning model treatment. The research design uses a non-equivalent control group design. The research was carried out in the even semester of 2021-2022 and the place of this research was one of the schools in Serang City, Banten province. The sample consisted of two classes; one class was given the learning treatment with the STEM approach, which served as the experimental class, and the other class received no therapy and functioned as the control class. Each course has 40 students, including 20 male and 20 female students. The average age of students is 17 years. The instrument used in this study was in the form of 10 essay questions. This question covered electric current circuit material with indicators of scientific thinking ability and practice. The instrument used in this study was in the form of 10 essay questions. The N-gain result in the experimental class was 0.67, while the control class was 0.46. The N-Gain results of the two types show the same category, namely the good category. However, the N-gain results from the experimental class show a value greater than 21% than the control class. These results prove that learning electric circuits using STEM is more effective than learning directly. The implications of this research are 1) It can foster an understanding of the relationship between the concept of electric circuits with practical skills in assembling electric current circuits, 2) Arouse students' curiosity and activate creative imagination and critical thinking, 3) Help students to understand and experiment with the scientific process.

Abstract

Chemistry is considered one of the most difficult subjects for college students. Process Oriented Guided Inquiry Learning activities are a student-centered teaching-learning strategy used in classrooms to improve students' academic performance. This study investigates the effectiveness of POGIL activities in teaching Chemistry in the two sections of Bachelor of Industrial Technology (BIT) students enrolled in Chemistry for the first semester of 2022-2023 to determine the academic performance, motivational orientation, and self-regulated learning strategies before and after the intervention. We administered the examination on Stoichiometry and Chemical Equations and Motivated Strategies for Learning Questionnaires before and after the intervention. BIT 1B had the POGIL activities for Stoichiometry, while BIT 1A had the traditional lecture on the same topic. For the second topic, chemical equation, the intervention was switched. BIT 1A had the POGIL activities, while BIT 1B had the traditional lecture. The result showed that most respondents were male since Industrial Technology is a male-dominated course. A significant difference was observed between the post-test scores of the students exposed to POGIL activities and traditional lectures. A significant difference was also observed in the motivational orientation and self-regulated learning strategies after exposure to POGIL activities. Students in a POGIL class perform better than students in a traditional class. It is recommended to use a student-centered teaching strategy such as POGIL, which encourages active learning in teaching Chemistry to improve students' academic performance.

Abstract

This article aimed to describe a combination between Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) learning with religious character while respecting diversity in the story book. This research is part of the research method of designing and developing picture storybooks at the ADDIE model's analysis, design, and development stages. Prototype Design STEM Activity Storybook shows how the picture of project-based learning is implemented. In this storytelling, students can learn how to interact with different tribes, nations, races, and religions to solve environmental problems. In the storybook, there are trigger questions Higher Order Thinking Skills (HOTS) to be discussed in discussions and STEM-Engineering Design Process (EDP). The purpose of developing this book is to illustrate how to combine STEM learning and character education in story books.

Abstract

This study aimed to find out how students 'scientific abilities are using contextual scientific-based learning tools during the Covid 19 pandemic. The method used in this research is descriptive quantitative. This research was conducted by conducting structured observations and questionnaires. In the data collection process, the researcher conducted three different ways of collecting data: the door-to-door system, the home visit system, and conventional learning. The results of students' scientific abilities using contextual scientific-based learning tools with door-to-door data retrieval systems of 81.56%, which are included in the very good category, in the home visit data collection system of 84.06% which are included in the very good category and the system data collection of conventional learning in class by 88% which is included in the very good category. Based on the study's results, it can be concluded that contextual scientific-based learning tools can be very well used in science learning after going through 3 different ways: the door-to-door system, the home visit system, and the conventional one.

Abstract

The study aimed to analyze indigenous scientific knowledge into scientific knowledge through the STEAM approach. Interesting online learning can be done by integrating the local culture of the Plancungan Village. This research uses the Quantitative Descriptive method. Based on research at seven schools in Ponorogo found 83,3% of teachers never used the local culture because teachers know no understands the local culture of the Plancungan village in science material. Respondents were 62 students from Junior High School 1, Junior High School 2, and Junior High School 3. 37,74% of students know this local culture. The value of local culture is contained in the process of making pottery, namely character, aesthetic, historical, and environmental values. STEAM analysis, including science on the process of making pottery, requires a tool in the form of a turntable called "Perabot". This turntable is a form of Simple Plane. Simple Planes are tools that can facilitate human work. The math is in the Mechanical Advantage of the "Perabot" which can be calculated by dividing the wheel's radius by the axle's radius. Engineering on the body has the greatest ratio of volume to overall proportion. The moth is smaller than the neck, which is adapted to its function. Traditional pottery-burning technology uses a field stove with husk, straw, and bamboo as fuel. The art of pottery can be seen in form, color, and function. STEAM analysis on the pottery-making process can increase students' interest in science. The student's interest in learning science obtained an average N-gain of 0.70 with high criteria. The resulting STEAM analysis can also be applied to e-modules, e-learning, e-books, etc.

Abstract

21st-century skills are important for students to be equipped to face the challenges of the 21st century. So it needs an appropriate approach to be able to provide resources that are by the demands of the 21st century. This study aimed to determine the influence of STEM approaches in science learning to improve students' 21st-century skills and determine the indicators of STEM elements in science learning. The method used in this study is a literature study or a study of research results from several journals. The instrument used is a Paper Classification Form (PCF) table. The data were analyzed using percentages and descriptive calculations. The study results showed that n methods are often used in STEM approaches to improve century skills by using a STEM approach only, followed by a combination of various learning models such as inquiry, PBL, and PjBL. K21st century skills most often studied are students' critical thinking skills. Indicator of STEM approaches in science learning includes Science, which is related to natural symptoms and observation; technology is related to the use of tools; Engineering is related to designing to make solutions; and Mathematics is related to linkage analysis. The STEM approach is very influential in improving students' 21st-century skills: communication, creativity, critical thinking, and collaboration.
