Abstract

Depression is a mood disorder commonly experienced by the elderly. Elderly who evaluate their past experiences as failure, guilt, anger, discontent and desperation will usually fall into depression. Number of depression found in elderly women tends to be higher in comparison to that of the elderly men. Elderly living in nursing houses tend to experience depression more than ones who live with the family. The aim of this study was to observe the effect of reminiscence group therapy in reducing depression experienced by the elderly women who live in nursing houses. Study conducted on a group of eight elderly women living in SA Nursing House, Jakarta. Method used is a Quasi Experimental Research with one-group pre-post design. Measuring tools used are Modified Mini Mental State Test (3ms) for the selection of participants with mild or moderate dementia category, and Geriatric Depression Scale - Short Form (GDS-SF) to determine the level of depression of the participants before and after reminiscence group therapy. The results showed that the reminiscence group therapy was successfully implemented and effective in reducing the rate of depression in the group of elderly women living in SA Nursing House, Jakarta. This is evident from a decrease in depression scores and a decrease in the number of symptoms of depression in participants that were measured by using a GDS-SF after the implementation of reminiscence group therapy.

Abstract

This paper addresses the mental decline and dementia of patients suffering from brain disorders. The most common of these neurological illnesses is Alzheimer’s disease, characterized by a progressive atrophy of cortical brain areas. Alzheimer’s disease accounts by far for the largest part of all dementias and is presently one of the most serious disorders, causing an immense burden on patients and society. Vascular dementia is noticed when the brain’s supply of blood is disrupted by strokes or other vessel pathologies and just as in Alzheimer’s this leads to cortical atrophy with almost identical symptoms. Since the distinction between Alzheimer’s and vascular dementia is a gradual one, mixed pathologies are rather common. Rarer causes of dementia are frontotemporal dementia, with pathologies mainly in frontal and temporal brain regions, Parkinson’s disease with atrophy in basal ganglia which leads to motor disturbances and at times to mental decline, Lewy body dementia caused by abnormal deposits in the brain resulting in considerable damages of neural cells, and Huntington’s disease, a genetic disorder with widely dispersed brain atrophy characterized by mixed Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s symptoms. Presently, for the most part the cease of the progressive course of all these disorders is not possible. The last two disorders mentioned in this paper are normal pressure hydrocephalus, with a reduced absorption of ventricular fluid, and Korsakoff’s syndrome, caused by a deficiency of vitamin B1. In normal pressure hydrocephalus a brain shunt may reverse the pathological symptoms, while a vitamin B1 diet could improve the symptoms of Korsakoff’s syndrome. Diagnosis, symptoms and pathologies of all disorders are presented in this paper.

Having support from the closest people, especially the family, is important. Mothers and daughters have the closest relationship in the family. The deep and personal relationship between mother and daughter may result in such unique difficulties for the mother when she finds out that her daughter is a homosexual. The purpose of this research is to describe the acceptance process of a mother who is facing a daughter with homosexual orientation. The researcher will also discuss other factors that weigh in the acceptance process. This research applies a qualitative approach with two participants, who are mothers with lesbian biological daughters and have already found out about their daughter’s sexual orientation. This research finds out that each participant experienced different dynamics of acceptance process towards her daughter sexual orientation. Generally, a mother begins her acceptance process with the denial phase. The next phases could differ, and several phases could be experienced at the same time. Factors that being consideration in the acceptance process depends on the life condition, values they believe in, and also mother’s personality. Aside from the acceptance of the sexual orientation, this research finds out that a mother tends to keep the good relationship with her daughter, even though she still could not accept the daughter’s sexual orientation.
