Abstract

This study discusses the issue of racism in the Lupine film series on Netflix. Lupine is a two-season series that tells the story of a shrewd thief. This story is based on a famous white people novel in France. However, the director changed the lead character in this series by using black actors. The series was popular on Netflix due to the story and how the director brought a black man as the lead character in a high-level racist country. The main point that tries to be explained in this research is how the issue of racism is distributed through an action film series. The director wants to frame racism in France. This study is a qualitative interpretive study. The data source for this study is a film series titled Lupine, which aired on Netflix in 2021. The data collection method uses documentation studies of the selected sequence. Researchers determined 14 scenes and analyzed the scenes using Charles Sanders Peirce's semiotic model with Peirce's Trichotomy: sign, object, and interpretant. This study indicates an issue of racism that the director wants to represent through scenes showing racist behavior experienced by black people in France. All settings are categorized into indicators of racism which consist of stereotypes based on race, racial discrimination, and racial violence.

Abstract

The development of communication technology allows journalists to publish journalistic content independently through personal accounts on social media and sharing platforms. Independent publication allows journalists to earn additional income exceeding their official salary as journalists in media companies. This practice indicated as entrepreneurial journalism often blurs the boundaries between journalistic and commercial aspects. This study aims to reveal the meaning of entrepreneurial journalism among journalists of mass media companies. This study uses the social construction of technology (SCoT) theory with Alfred Schutz's phenomenological method and a qualitative approach. The study showed that journalists publish news through social media accounts and sharing platforms in various forms and content formats. The journalists practice entrepreneurial journalism because their skills support their passion for mastering technological devices. Besides, they also achieve self-satisfaction from working independently. Journalists regard entrepreneurial journalism as a side job while upholding the journalistic aspect rather than the economic reason. Expectations and opportunities to earn additional income do not attract journalists practicing entrepreneurial journalism to ignore journalistic values and norms. Journalists prioritize creating and publishing quality news content by following the Journalistic Code of Ethics. Entrepreneurial journalism tends to be interpreted by journalists personally as a form of repositioning and self-actualization during social life.

Abstract

Qadiriyyyah Naqsyabandiyyah is a popular tariqa in Indonesia. The tariqa became a sufistic communication medium between humans and God. This article aims to identify the sufistic transcendental communication paradigm in religious activity. Transcendental communication is communication between humans and gods with a Sufistic approach. From a sufism perspective, the tariqa is a massive activity in Indonesian Islam. Sufism desires the cleanliness of the human heart (qalb) and mind (aql) in serving Allah. Human servitude to Allah is a feature of sufistic communication that prioritizes total awareness and obedience. Sufistic and transcendental communication have the same dimension and concept: ubudiyah (worship). One form of the massive sufism movement in the world is the Qadiriyyah Naqsyabandiyyah. This tariqa becomes a testament for humans to communicate with Allah through zikr. This type of research is qualitative. Qualitative research explains descriptively and comprehensively the paradigm of sufistic communication in the Qadiriyah Naqsyabandiyya tariqa. Data is obtained through text documentation that presents papers in scientific journals that raise the theme of sufistic communication, sufism, and tariqa. Data analysis of this study used descriptive analysis. The results of this study show that the tariqa prioritizes vertical communication with Allah. Aql and qalb became the basis of sufistic communication. Thus, zikr and prayer practiced in the tariqa (with murshid’s guidance) bring people closer to Allah.

Abstract

Building character values is highly fundamental for the growth of children. Media is one of the digital platforms for teaching children those values, particularly social roles, beliefs, and other values in society. Through media, children can access any information that attracts their interests. An animated movie is one of the media products most children like. In this study, the author aims to analyze the animated movie, "Pororo, The Little Penguin," which could be used as a teaching technique to teach preschool students about the importance of character values. The author used the qualitative method and applied Mise en Scene theory from Manon de Reeper and Decoding- Encoding approach from Stuart Hall. The study's object was taken from the YouTube channel of Pororo, The Little Penguin, Season 6, Episode 13, titled "We're Sorry, Loopy." The dataset was also derived from the comments on Common Sense Media to find out how the parents or kids react to this animated film, Pororo. Asides from it, the author also took the sources from the literary works and proceedings to support the analysis. The result indicates that the film's episode contains social and educational principles that should be ingrained in students at a young age.

Abstract

This study examines the public reception of reporting on the deradicalization of terrorism on Metro TV. The method to be used is reception analysis from the Stuart Hall model. Reception analysis is an alternative approach to studying audiences and how to interpret messages received from a media; the starting point of this research is the assumption that the meaning contained in mass media is not only found in the text. The subject of this research is civil servants in the Secretariat of the Vice President. The study results show that in the hegemonic-dominant position of acceptance, informants accept and share media values on the issue of radicalism. Informants agree with media statements that show the existence of radicalism in society and threaten the integrity of the Republic of Indonesia. The conflicting evidence is low because several events in Indonesia indicate the existence of activities that are considered radical. Weaker resistance to media messages means a relatively strong media position influencing informants' acceptance of the text. In the position of oppositional acceptance, the informants' political awareness and reactions to the construction of media information, especially the problems of radicalism and intolerance in Indonesia, are not easily influenced by the structure of media information.

Abstract

Being an Atheist is always an unpopular choice in the middle of high religious context society. The stigma and pressure from religious groups forced Atheists in Indonesia to hide their identity in public generally and when taking care of the affairs of state administration. This research utilized Communication Privacy Management and Dramaturgy Theory alongside the phenomenology perspective to reveal how Atheists in Indonesia live their "beliefs" in their not-so-friendly environment. The results showed that they generally presented themselves as religious in front of their family by pretending to practice religious rituals, contributing to their special personal branding for the families. Meanwhile, in other social environments, such as friendship, they could be freer to present themselves as they were, although they still had to manage private information about their Atheist identity.
