Abstract

This study aimed to find the personality development of the main character in Alice in Borderland TV series, Ryohei Arisu. This research objective can further be detailed into explaining Arisu’s experiences that affect his personality, analyzing Arisu’s specific goals which lead his personality to develop, explaining how Arisu’s personality develops from the beginning until the end of the series, and  showing how Arisu's personality development changes after he is transported to the Borderland. Hurlock’s (1974) Theory of Personality Development was used to find out how and why Arisu's personality develops and changes. According to the theory, there are several conditions that are responsible for a personality change, e.g.: changes in the environment, changes in social pressure, and changes in self-concept. The result of the analysis shows that Arisu's selfish, lazy, unconfident, and physically weak personality develops into confident, witty, reflexive, and incredibly responsive characters. Aside from that,  Arisu also has a new sense of determination by which he wants to live his life to the fullest and carries on his friends.

Abstract

The existence of local and vernacular languages in Indonesian of more than six hundreds needs to be defend. It can be done by fostering high loyalty to keep using the language, especially the mother tongue (vernacular) amid the strike of more popular languages. The phenomena of language extinction in the future, such as the decrease in the number of active speakers, the reduction of certain language use, and the ignorance to the mother tongue have become a big problem nowadays. One solution in language preservation is through lexicography or ilm al-shina'ah al-mu'jamiyah or dirasah mu'jamiyah. Lexicography is the art and technique of compiling a dictionary by selecting words to uptake (dakhil), defining word meanings, discussing the completeness of the dictionary components, and giving other information to provide a correct and easy-to-understand meaning of vocabulary. Compiling a dictionary is one of efforts in maintaining the existence of both Indonesian and vernacular language, like Gayo language. Aside from that, arranging Indonesian-Gayo-English-Arabic lexicography, will also help position Indonesian language among global languages. In addition, more Indonesian people may also be able to master second or foreign languages as a vehicle for learning science and modern technology.

This study aimed at describing the nationalism concept behind the history of poetry writing of two poets from different exponents, namely Exponent 45 and Exponent 70. The focus of this study lied in the viewpoints of the two poets towards nationalism meanings reflected in their poems. The method applied in this study was descriptive-comparative by using comparative literature approach. The results show that in the poem Diponegoro that was written by Chairil Anwar, nationalism is seen as an effort of the country to liberate its people from colonialism. Meanwhile, in the poem Tanah Air Mata, a work of Sutardji Calzoum Bachri, nationalism is viewed as the manifestation of people’s love to their country in order to defend the independence of their nation and state.

Abstract

This study aimed at describing the intertextuality of assertive speech acts performed by Ophelia, the main character of the drama entitled The Tragedy of Hamlet: Prince of Denmark and the movie entitled Ophelia. There were three theories underlying this research, namely assertive speech act theory from Searle (1979), intertextuality theory from Genette (1997), and the collaborative oriented theory from Maltz & Bolker (1982). This research employed descriptive-qualitative method since the data are in the forms of texts and the objective was describing phenomena. The main instrument of this research was the researcher themselves with referential sources, data sheets, and word processor as some of the supporting instruments. The data were taken from the script of the drama and the movie and collected by documentation and validated through investigator triangulation by involving an expert in linguistics. The collected data were then analyzed by the process of reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing as well as verification. The results showed that informing act, implicit intertextuality, and criticizing other people are the most frequent categories appearing in the dialogues.
