Abstract

Background : Malaria is still a major problem, both in international and national scale. Erythrocytes containing Plasmodium sp. will stimulate the release of Th1 (T helper-1) and release monocytes and macrophages to perform phagocytosis and produce tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-α). The release of iNOS and free radicals would increase the expression of adhesion molecules such as ICAM-1, VCAM-1, CD36, and P-selectin. Research shows that IL- 10 can inhibit the production of TNF - α and IL - 1. TNF-α and ICAM - 1 play a role in the occurrence of cerebral malaria. Bangle (Zingiber cassumunar Roxb.) has a lot of potentials to be utilized as a complementary therapy to prevent the complications of malaria. Objective : This study aims to find the ability of Bangle (Zingiber cassumunar Roxb.) extract as an immunostimulant which would be used as a complementary therapy for standard malaria treatment. Methods : A number of 25 mice Balb/C males were divided into 5 groups, stimulated with methanol fractions of Bangle extract for 14 consecutive days before infected with Plasmodium berghei. All groups were examined for parasite daily, until day 7 post-positive malaria, referring to Artemisinindose regimen administered orally 0.04 mg/g bw/day for 7 days. Results : This study proves that the administration of Artemisinin combined with methanol fraction of Bangle extract provides better results to inhibit ICAM-1 gene expression in malaria-infected mice compared to single-therapy Artemisinin or methanol fraction of bangle extract. Conclusion : The combination of artemisinin and methanol fraction of Bangle extract can inhibit ICAM-1 gene expression in malaria-infected mice better compared to without the combination.

Abstract

Abstract This research was conducted aiming to find out whether Asmaul Husna dhikr could be using a treatment to enhance self-control among alcohol abusers. There were 18 alcohol abusers age between 18 to 40 years old as subject divided into two groups. The research used quasi-experimental method with nonrandomized pretest-posttest-control group design, comparing the conditions before and after treatment between two groups. Self-control was measured by The Brief Self Control Scale (BSCS) adapted from Tangney, Baumister, and Boone (2004) scale, which self-discipline, deliberate, healthy habits, work ethic and reliability as self-control aspects. The experimental group participated in asmaul husna dhikr activities for about 2 weeks. The result showed significant differences in self-control score between experimental group and control group, by its significant level showing p = 0.001 (p < 0.05). Thus, asmaul husna dhikr could be an effective treatment for enhancing self-control among alcohol abusers.

Abstract

Spiritual healing, also known as healing through prayer and meditation, has been widely studied by various scholars from different religions including Islam, Hindu, Buddhism and Christianity. The term spiritual medicine is increasingly popular with increasing mental disorders, degenerative diseases, metabolic, cancer and social illness such as drug abuse. Religions of Islam, Hinduism, Buddhism and Christianity have almost the same tradition in the spiritual aspect to create purity of self and inner peace through the practice of worship or prayer based on spiritual meditation. The application of spiritual medicine is mostly done to reduce stress and anxiety due to illness suffered by the patient. Spiritual medicine is commonly used to peace building, study self-control, anger management, empathy, affection, calmness, and also to sharpen brain activity and increase well being. Spirituality refers to the process of improvement done with the aim to restore humans to the true figure as a God creation and have the correct perception about the true image of god based on the holy book of the Qur'an, Torah, gospel and the main figure of world religions such as the Buddha and prophet of Muhammad PBUH. All religions teach the need to ask the Creator to be healthy, prosperous and free from the sufferings of illness. The benefits of spiritual medicine depend on the quality, intensity and frequency or quantity of practices or methods that are practiced by each religious believer.

Abstract

Background: The Prevalence of LBP in Indonesia continues to increase, while the exact cause cannot be identified. The facts show that most of LBP is caused by occupational health problems rather than organic diseases, which one of them is the habit of wearing high-heeled shoes. Besides having an aesthetic function, high-heeled shoes also give negative effects on health. Objective: To evaluate the association between the usage and duration of high heels with LBP, as well as evaluating disability due to LBP in female salespersonMethods: The study used analytic observational study with cross-sectional design that includes 123 sales promotion girls in one of department stores, Cengkareng, West Jakarta which was carried out from November to December 2015. The data was collected through the interview which includes characteristics of the subjects, complaint history of low back pain (LBP), measurement of heel heights, and anthropometry data. The intensity of pain is assessed by Visual Analogue Scale, whilst the degree of disability is assessed by using Oswestry Low Back Pain Disability Questionnaire. Data analysis is performed by using Fisher’s test with a significance level p<0.05 software SPSS for Windows version 21.Results: The majority of 20 to 25-year-old sales promotion girls with a normal nutritional status wear 5-7 cm-high-heeled shoes for more than one year. About 68% of them complain of low back pain (LBP), where 11% of subjects were obtained with suspected disability due to LBP complaint. The heel heights is not correlated with LPB complaints, but the working period of sales promotion girls is (p=0.000).Conclusion: There is no correlation between high heel shoes with low back pain. There is a relationship between the working period with low back pain.

Abstract

Fatal Complications and high amputation rate were reported in popliteal artery rupture cases. Diagnosis delay and revascularization failure within 6 hour of Golden Period are related to amputation and death, even when specialist intervention is available. We report a patient with popliteal artery rupture and compartment syndrome, which was successfully underwent artery repair surgery after 42 hours of delayed revascularization. This case illustrates that delayed revascularization might produce an acceptable outcome in a particular circumstance.

Abstract

Background : Stroke can lead into long-term disabilities which may affect stroke survivors' quality of life (QOL). The importance of stroke survivors' QOL is still getting little attention. Objective : To know stroke survivors' QOL and the risk factors associate with, i.e.:sociodemographic, activity daily living, cognitive, and depression.Methodology : This cross-sectional study was conducted in April-October 2014 at neurology clinic Dr.Sardjito Hospital, Yogyakarta. Subjects' criteria were minimal four weeks after the first stroke incident and came with their primary caregiver. Subjects were interviewed about their sociodemographic condition and were given WHOQOL-BREF, Mini Mental State Examination (MMSE), and Beck Depression Inventory (BDI) questionnaires. Meanwhile, their caregiver was interviewed with Barthel Index (BI) questionnaire. Bivariate chi-square and logistic regression analysis was done. Results : There were 64 subjects analyzed. QOL domain affected the most is physical, while the least is environment. Bivariate analysis found not working after stroke and higher BDI score associate with lower WHOQOL-BREF physical (r=9.286, p<0.01 and r=5.361, p<0.05) and psychological (r=3.935, p<0.05 and r=14.527, p<0.001) domain. No risk factor associates with WHOQOL-BREF social relationship domain. Higher BDI score associates with lower WHOQOL-BREF environment domain (r=5.861, p<0.05). Regression analysis shows older age (p<0,05) and not working after stroke (p<0,01) are risk factors for lower WHOQOL-BREF physical domain, while higher BDI score is risk factor for lower WHOQOL-BREF psychological (p<0,01) and environment (p<0,05) domain. Conclusions : Older age and not working after stroke incident are risk factors for physical domain of QOL. Depression is risk factor for psychological and environment domain of QOL.
