Abstract

Abstract: This article aims at knowing the teachers’ perception toward the use of game-based learning in teaching vocabulary for junior high school students. The research design used in this study is descriptive qualitative. One teacher from each three types of junior high school in Malang; private, public, and Islamic junior high school participated in the semi-structured interview. The interview was conducted through online meetings using Google Meet app due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Twelve questions were delivered in Bahasa (Indonesian) to ease the participants to understand and answer it then it was transcript to collect the data. The findings of this study are teachers’ shared positive perception toward the use of game-based learning as vocabulary teaching media. They also agreed that game-based learning is worth to enhance students’ vocabulary since there are more advantages despite the challenges they faced. Keywords: Teaching vocabulary, Game-based learning, teachers’ perceptions

Abstract

Abstract: This study aims to describe the EFL university students’ perception of the use of online learning platform in the covid-19 pandemic and to examine the difference in students’ perception based on gender. The researcher conducted aquantitative using survey design method. The sample of this study was 80 students  consists of 40 males and 40 females students of sixth year of the english education of Universitas Islam Malang. The instrument of this study was an online questionnaire by using a five-likert scale type. It uses to answer the students’ perception of the use of online learning platform. The result of the study showed that the EFL students’ perception of the use of online learning platforms share positive perception. The finding was also showed that there is a significant difference between male and female of the use of online learning platform. Male students’ perspective is more positive than females in the use of online learning platforms.Keywords: students’ perception, online learning platform, gender

Abstract

Abstract: This article aims to describe the vocabulary learning strategies used by high achievers. The research design used in this research is descriptive qualitative. The subjects in this study were fourth semester students who were high achievers in the English Education Department. The subjects in this study were 10 students. To collect data in this study, the researcher using questionnaires to get validity of the data and interviews as supporting instruments. The questionnaire consisted of 25 multiple choices which included 6 kinds of vocabulary learning strategies according to Oxford (1990). The results of this study are high achievers using memory, cognitive, compensation, metacognitive, affective, and social strategy in learning vocabulary. Meanwhile, the strategy most often used by high achievers is the compensation strategy. The researcher offer suggestion as follows: 1) For teacher, this research can provide information related to various strategies in learning vocabulary so that it can be used to improve vocabulary skills in students also it can facilitate the teaching and learning process. 2) For students, the students are suggested to use more strategy in learning vocabulary especially compensation strategy. 3) For readers, this research can help readers to increase knowledge about vocabulary learning strategies. 4) For the other researchers, this research can be a reference and can help other researchers to develop similar research so that it is expected to find new findings from the research conducted.Key words: High achievers, advanced vocabulary, vocabulary learning strategies

Abstract

Abstract: This article gives an overview of a piece of qualitative research conducted at University of Islam Malang. This paper present an attempt to describe students’ perception on EOT program, to look tutees’ perception being taught by peer tutor and to know tutor teaching’s strategy on learning. Five tutors and five tutees in different peer tutoring group were involved. The findings revealed that tutees are comfortable and happy being taught by tutor. Tutors outlined that searching for resources and preparing the materials before teaching, using games as a learning tool, giving different approach are the strategies to help tutees on learning. EOT program provides an effective program to improve English skill and it is valuable to develop teaching skill for tutor. However, time management and incomplete facility are the barriers for tutor and tutee during learning process.Key words: EOT program, peer tutoring, learning English

Abstract

ABSTRACT: Teaching is the main task of the teachers. Therefore, to prepare the students in Teaching they must be trained before they deal with the real situations in the school. Teaching practice program is one of the courses that must be completed by students who majored in education so that when they get involved in the world of work they have experience in teaching.This research entitled “Teaching Practice Program : Pre-service teachers’ voice” aims at (1) Pre –service teacher’s perception towards teaching practice 2) finding out problems Pre –service teachers faced in teaching practice. The partisipants of this research involves 30 EFL students as Pre-service teachers, in the Faculty of Teacher Training and Education, Universitas Islam Malang who have completed their teaching practice program which lasted for about 2 months.This research used a descriptive qualitative approach.  The participants of this research were the sixth semester students of teaching practice program in English Education Department Faculty of Teacher Training and Education University of Islam Malang. In gathering the data, the researcher used instruments namely questionnaire and online interview. The questionnaire and online interview was used to answer the research problems.Based on the results of data analysis, the researcher found that pre-service teachers have perceptions that teaching practice helps them in their teaching, especially in the personal competence, the pedagogical competence, the professional competence and the social competence.  Then, the results also showed that the problems that the Pre-service teachers found during teaching practice program were they felt unconfident since they first faced students in classroom. It makes them difficult to adapt the classroom condition. Lack of learning media in teaching such as LCD, projectors, licensing which is difficult in using the lab causes, not mastering the material, will be given to his students cause less effective learning in the classroom.  Pre-service teacher also have problems in their social relationships, especially with students and teachers.  Keywords: Perception, Teaching Practice Program, Pre-service teachers, 4 teacher’s competencies.

Abstract

Abstract: The current research applied quantitative design in order to compute the numerical data. The research design used correlational design and independent sample t-test. The researcher took 33 students to serve as the sample of the study. The data covered the students’ self-confidence level and their speaking score. The findings of the research indicated that the majority of the students (61%) reached high self-confidence in working on the questionnaire, while the majority of the students (76%) reached the average score in their speaking achievement. According to the correlational results, the data showed that the sig. (2-tailed) was .610 which means it was higher than the significant value (0.05). It could be inferred that there was no significant correlation between self-confidence and speaking achievement. Meanwhile, based on the results of independent sample t-test, the level of significance (p-value) was .000 which means the p-value was lower than the significant value (0.05). It could be concluded that there was a significant difference between the students who have high self-confidence and the students who have low self-confidence in their speaking achievement. In sum, it can be stated that the students who have high self-confidence do not determine they will also achieve high speaking achievement.Keywords: Relationship, Speaking Skill, Self-confidence
