Abstract

Abstract: This study aims to predict the relationship among the use of metacognitive reading strategies, motivation, and reading comprehension ability. Thirty-five university students of second semester especially from English Language Department at University of Islam Malang were shared the questionnaires of Reading strategies and motivation followed by answering a reading test. A quantitative method was used with correlational design. The findings implied the students use different strategies when reading text. PROB (Problem-Solving Strategies) was most frequently used in students’ reading activity. They also had high motivation when reading academic text since they are curious about the contents. In reading comprehension aspect, most of students got low predicate or perform below the average. Pearson product moment and spearman rank correlation in SPSS 25 were used to predict the relationship among the variables. The result showed that metacognitive reading strategies cannot be made to predict the increase of reading comprehension ability. Nevertheless, there is a significant correlation between metacognitive reading strategies and motivation. The findings contradict with the findings of most previous studies. Therefore, more investigations need conducting since there are other factors affecting reading comprehension performance such as students’ linguistic knowledge, and also the appropriateness of strategy used. Keywords: reading, metacognitive reading strategies, reading motivation, reading comprehension

Abstract

Abstract: Reading is fundamental skill for knowledge, character development, learning and academic achievements. In EFL context, reading in English language is beneficial for developing language proficiency. Reading is considered as habitual activity that involves the way in how much people read, how often people read and what do people read. However, many studies show that reading habit in Indonesia is still low. In this case, the current study aims to cover how is the students’ reading habit and what makes high achiever students different in terms of reading habit to the rest of the students. This study carried out using descriptive qualitative research method through semi structured interview. The data collected from 9 students of English department from University of Islam Malang through online with the use of WhatsApp voice note. The data analysed descriptively by analysing theme from interview excerpts to answer the research problems. The result indicates that high achiever students read more consistently and tend to gain information from various sources compared to low and mid achiever students. They also preferred to find their own material instead of being provided and did not affected by difficult reading content unlike low and mid achiever students. Moreover, high achiever students focus on self-development as their reason to read in developing skills and knowledge while low and mid achievers’ motivation mostly driven by assignment. In terms of receiving reading recommendation, low and mid achiever students mostly rely on friends and lecturers unlike high achievers who find additional recommendation in the internet.Key Words: Reading habit, high achievers.

Abstract

Abstract: Reading material in this era of technology can be accessed easily through internet which offer access to information especially for newer generations. The availability of digital reading material in the internet allows the reader to access all kinds of information from around the world, it means that every individual in this world with internet coverage have the same opportunity to gain knowledge. For this reason, the researcher interested in conducting study about the students reading habit in digital setting. This study was implemented using descriptive qualitative method though online questionnaire and semi-structured interviews. The data for this research were collected from 10 students of the English department from the 7th Semester at University of Islam Malang. The data are analyzed using qualitative analysis that consists of data reduction, grouping, coding, and interpretation to get the data as a conclusion. The results show that the students' reading frequency is mostly determined by academic demands and necessity. All the students also preferred digital text due to its practicality, easy to use and availability of the material on the internet, and the students tend to choose lightweight and shorter reading materials. All the students give positive responses due to the convenience and familiarity of using digital text as well as experience in reading digital academic text. However, there are also difficulties encountered by students like visual problems, eyestrain, tiredness and technical issues like taking too long to open, corrupted file, the gap between lecturer and students in reading method and protection in some downloaded digital text.Key Words: Digital reading, habit, English.

Abstract

Abstract: Listening is a basic language skill that is important in receiving oral messages to carry out communication with others more effectively. However, mastering listening especially in the EFL context requires a lot of practice, therefore language learners need to carry out extensive listening practice outside of class activities. Extensive listening can be defined as listening for pleasure that allows learners to receive both comprehensive and enjoyable input. Due to this reason, the researcher is interested in studying EFL students’ extensive listening activities at the university. This study was carried out using descriptive qualitative research methods through questionnaires and semi-structured interviews as an instrument. The questionnaire is used to find 5 suitable participants for the interview from the students of the English department at the University of Islam Malang. The data for this research was collected online through the use of WhatsApp voice notes and video calls. The result of the interview is analyzed using qualitative analysis for more detailed data about extensive listening activities. The result showed that all students have a medium to a high level of perception towards both aspects of extensive listening such as enjoyment and benefit and give positive responses towards six kinds of extensive listening material such as English songs, movies, podcasts, audio, news, and speech. The result also indicated that extensive listening has many benefits, such as providing an enjoyable learning experience and environment, flexibility to be used anywhere anytime, and flexibility to choose material based on learning purpose and needs. Moreover, extensive listening also benefits language skills such as vocabulary, pronunciation, retention, comprehension, authentic material, and more importantly improvement in listening skills. Keywords: Listening Skill, Extensive Listening Activities

Abstract

This study aimed to describe the academic writing challenges faced by students and how students can overcome their challenges. This study used a descriptive qualitative research design. This research was conducted on 55 English Education students in the 6th semester at University of Islam Malang. There were 5 out of 55 students who were interviewed. The purposive sampling was used in this study. In collecting data, the instrument used was the questionnaire and interview. The results showed that the students agreed that they had challenges in all the items of the questionnaire except for the part of writing conclusion which stated that it was neutral. Based on the results of interview, the students’ strategies to overcome their challenges using seven strategies such as brainstorming, reading many articles, using online applications, receiving feedback, writing practice, using the dictionary, editing their work by themselves. In conclusion, they faced challenges in terms of structure, developing ideas, vocabulary, and grammar.

Abstract

Abstract: Reading is the most fundamental skill in term of acquiring information, it allows the reader to obtain knowledge from any parts of the world. Nowadays reading material can be easily obtained through internet, this quick access to information should be able to develop students’ reading interest. Developing reading interest allows the reader to be more literate and improves analytical skill in comprehending text as well as to collect information and academic achievements. Therefore, the researcher interested to study, students’ reading interest in academic purposes. This study was conducted using descriptive qualitative research design to find out the students’ interest in reading related to their academic importance. The participants in this study is 31 students from third semester students at University of Islam Malang and 10 of them were selected for the interview. The questionnaire was analyzed using excel and the interview was analyzed using descriptive qualitative query analysis that consist of data reduction, data management, interpretation and drawing conclusion. The result shows that students’ interest to read, comes from many factors including enjoyment, willingness, consciousness and attention. Moreover, there are many difficulties encountered by the students including boredom, laziness, lack of option and too difficult reading materials as most of the students tend to choose their own reading materials. The result of the study offers solution to improve reading interest such as start reading, finding interesting material that suit their interest instead of just reading learning materials, and motivate themselves to read a lot so eventually reading might become their habit.Key Words: Reading interest, academic purposes.
