Abstract

The rhetorical project of Muhammad al-Ṣāmil, which called Balāghat Ahl al-Sunnah comes in the field of purifying Islamic knowledge from extraneous impurities and deviations. We discuss the foundations of this project and its cognitive practices as a discourse that can be analyzed according to approaches to discourse analysis, especially Foucault and Fairclough approaches, to arrive at a critical evaluation of the issue and its consequences. In the end, we reached the following results: First, the project is merely a transfer of “subjectivity” from the subjectivity of the theologians (mutakallimīn) to the subjectivity of those who reject the theological thought (‘ilm al-kalām); Secondly, the project is, in fact, a rhetorical practice through which authoritarian practices are carried out to exclude others and deconstruct their authority. Third, the support of the official educational institution for the project suggests ideological support as a policy by the state institution that funds it, and this means directing the knowledge path in a politically and ideologically biased direction. In sum, it is said that the project started with an ideology critique and ended with ideologized critique.

Abstract

Ali Mustafa Yakub and the Majelis Ulama Indonesia (Indonesian Ulama Council) differed in their interpretation of the Indonesian qibla directon. According to the Indonesian Ulama Council, the qibla of Indonesia faces northwest, whereas Yakub believes it faces west. The Hisab Rukyat Board of the Indonesian Ministry of Religion, the Indonesian Ulama Council, Islamic organizations, and Islamic scholars (ulama) can use this research as a reference when determining the qibla. This study employs Abdul Wahhab Khallaf's takhsis theory in ‘Ilm Uṣūl al-Fiqh. In this investigation, both qualitative and quantitative methodologies were utilized. The Al-Qur'an is interpreted using the thematic interpretation procedure. This study concludes that the majority of the hadiths narrated by Tirmizī (the direction between east and west is the qibla) can be interpreted in light of verse 144 of surah al-Baqarah (turn your face toward the Masjid al-Haram). This takhsis theory classifies the direction of the Indonesian qibla into three categories: general (west), semi-specific (northwest), and special ('ainul Kaaba).

Abstract

This article explores the role of interfaith relations in Indonesian society, with a particular focus on their representation in contemporary Islamic novels. While various programs have been implemented to foster interfaith harmony, the role of literature in promoting such relationships has received less attention. This study highlights the incorporation of interfaith themes within contemporary Islamic novels, where romantic storylines are intertwined with Islamic teachings. Millennials and young people, who constitute a significant portion of the readership, find enjoyment in these narratives and ideologies. The inclusion of interfaith narratives in these novels serves as a countermeasure to the popular "chick lit" genre that employs vulgar language and lacks religious nuances. Employing Ervin Goffman's theory of dramaturgy, the research focuses on the works of Habibburahman El Shirazy and Asma Nadia as representative popular Indonesian Muslim novelists. The findings reveal that Islamist novels have received positive responses from millennial readers, and the elegant delivery of interfaith values contributes to peacebuilding within the context of this generation. Overall, this study emphasizes the promotion of peace and interfaith understanding through the medium of popular Islamic novels, catering to the needs and preferences of the millennial demographic.

Abstract

This article seeks to analyze the concept of wujūd in Islamic philosophy, including the Peripatetic (al-Hikmah al-Masha'iyyah) and Illuminationist (al-Hikmah al-Isyraqiyya) schools. The study employs a discourse analysis approach, using data collected from an analysis of Islamic philosophy literature with a focus on the concept of wujūd in these two schools. The findings of the study show that despite using the same term, the concept of external reality has different meanings in different schools of Islamic philosophy. The Peripatetic school interprets wujūd as the basis of reality, but its extension varies depending on the differences in mahiyyah (essence). The Illuminationist school, on the other hand, interprets wujūd as an addition to external reality, as the fundamental element is mahiyyah. One of the novel contributions of this study is to highlight the sensitivity of the concept of essence in Islamic ontology, as evidenced by the different meanings of wujūd in the two schools of Islamic philosophy. However, both schools agree that wujūd is manifested as a mental reality, a predication for mahiyyah. In mental reality, the fundamental element is mahiyyah.
