Abstract

Abstract. Portfolio is method which is alternatively can be used to assess students’ ability in English. This study, therefore, aimed to investigate the usefulness of using portfolios as assessment tools in Basic Speaking lesson in higher education. The data were two lecturers who are teaching Basic Speaking in English Education Department. The data were then analyzed qualitatively since this study observe the natural phenomena happen in English language teaching and interview was also used to obtain more information both from students and lecturers. The results revealed several things, such as portfolios provide students to see their own strengths and weaknesses when they produced the tasks, also provide students to look at closer their own learning within a unique way and hereafter as their critical self-analysis, and last but not least, it provides many information both from the students as their language learning process and lecturers enable to impersonate the process of teaching.

Abstract

Abstract. In teaching language, a teacher needs to apply a certain approach, method, and technique or strategy in order to get the good result in teaching. This study is aimed to know how the Guessing Games through Pictures can motivate students to improve their speaking skill in class XI-IPS.1 and XI-IPS.2 in odd semester at 2019/2020. The Methodology of the study is a classroom action research. The method is chosen because the writer is quite sad and concerned to find the fact that the students’ speaking skill is really poor. The data involved four aspects for their speaking skill. They are fluency, pronunciation, vocabulary and grammar. While students communicative competence also covered four aspects. They are the student ability in raising question, ability in giving responses, ability in giving explanation and ability in giving description. Rubric of the students speaking score and the form of the students’ demonstrated competence were used to record their both speaking skill and demonstrated competence. While the student active participation and motivation was scored by using the form of checklist. The score or the data was analyzed from cycle to cycle to make sure whether there was progress or not. The result of the study showed that based on the finding of the data from two cycles there was an increase in almost all aspects in students speaking skill and the students’ activeness in joining the process of learning in class. The data obtained show very significant progress although the result of first stage with 2 cycles is that the students did not achieve the criteria of success because their average score was only 61.32. But the score is much better than the result before implementing the method that is only 41.36. Then the result of stage 2 with 2 cycles has proved that most of the students have achieved the criteria of success for the average score gained by the students was 76.55. Pronunciation was the most difficult aspect in students speaking skill. This was quite logic since aspect of pronunciation in the students speaking skill and aspect of describing in students demonstrated competence were the most difficult and complicated problem faced during the speaking classroom activities.

Abstract

Teaching English as a second or foreign language wants variation and creative thinking of the teacher so as to create the category additional joyful and relaxed that creates students additional eager and fascinated by connection the category. Kahoot that's designed as a mixture of ICT use in education of grammatical and the right sentences and tences. This study was conceived in qualitative study, data on the use of Kahoot online software in English classrooms were collected from several related literature. This present study took some previous study which demonstrated the effectiveness of students using video as a learning medium, particularly EFL classes. Furthermore, the teacher must also be able to deliver good material using Kahoot online application as a model. In addition, teachers must have a step-by-step plan of what the teacher must do during teaching and learning before using this online application as a teaching medium. This study has been assumed by many academics around the world that teaching English using media such as kahoot. This study was done in the 3th semester of students in English Department of Universitas Qomaruddin that the students are consist of 31 students.

Abstract

Doing academic presentation is a requirement in Speaking class for the fourth semester students in English Language and Teaching Program. Students not only focus on the materials for the presentation, but also prepare their performance in front of the audience. As the goal of presentation is to share information to their classmates, they are demanded to present effectively so their audience understand what they would like inform in the presentation. 19 presenters performed, and metadiscourse markers of their spoken words were analyzed. It is found that the highest usage is in engagement markers (46.54%), hedges (21.24%), self-mentions (19.33%), boosters (11.93%), and attitude markers (0.95). The results show that all speakers utilize metadiscourse markers (using Hyland’s classification) and each speaker has their style in utilizing these markers in organizing their ideas.

Abstract

In this present globalization Era, teaching English with the goal as a tool for communication is necessary. In line with it, MTs Al Karimi 1, however, has commitment to create students to be able to use English as a tool for communication in everyday life. Due to the reason, this research has been conducted. This study aimed to develop English speaking materials and solve the problem during teaching and learning English for the seventh grader of Islamic High School. The study conducted in MTs Al Karimi 1 Gresik. The design of this study was Research and Development (R&D). The detail procedure of each step is elaborated in the procedure of the development. The researcher conduct this study with the following procedure: 1) identifying the problem; 2) reviewing the problem into the theory; 3) conducting need assessment and needs analysis; 4) gathering materials; 5) writing manuscript; 6) verifying to the expert; 7) revising; 8) validating to the experts. The result in this development was the supplementary English-speaking text book for the seventh grader of Islamic high school. The supplementary book contained the attractive cover, preface, table of contents, book mapping, colorful pictures and photos, good coherent and illustration. It has nine chapters with the topics which were chosen under the consideration of the students’ need. The strength of this product is on the basic common useful expressions, these basic common useful expressions are also translated to Indonesia equivalent since the students’ level of English proficiency is in intermediate level. By that way, the students are motivated and are easy to use the developed materials both inside and outside the classroom.

Abstract

This research is CAR (Classroom Action Research) conducted in SMP Negeri 1 Lamongan. This research uses picture aided learning startegy to improve students’ writing ability. The subjects of this study are the 28 (twenty eight) students from grade VII. The research was conducted in year 2018-2019. The results shows that picture series-aided learning can improve students’ writing ability. Their average scores increase from 56.86 into 77.87 (21.01 increase points), that can be elaborated as follows: 10.43 points increase, from 20.86 into 31.29, for content; 5.28 points increase, from 11.79 into 17.07, for language; and 5.29 points increase, from 24.21 into 29.50, for organization.
