EL2J = English Language and Literature Journal publishes articles on literature, language, and language teaching from various perspectives, covering both literary and fieldwork studies. The journal puts emphasis on aspects related to language studies, with special reference to culture, literature, linguistics, and language teaching. This journal always places English language and literature in the central focus of academic inquiry and invites any comprehensive observation with various dimensions in the country. The journal, serving as a forum for the study of literature, language, and language teaching, supports studies of particular themes and interdisciplinary studies in relation to the subjects. It has become a medium of exchange of ideas and research findings from various traditions of learning that have interacted in a scholarly manner.

Abstract

This research investigated existential presupposition in the Slogan of Y.O.U the Simplicity lips products. The research refered to describe the data that was gotten through the website advertisement. The purposes of this research were (1) finding the functions of existential presupposition in the slogan and (2) finding the factors on how the consumers were interested in the product through the slogans. In the analysis of the data, the writer used descriptive qualitative method. The method was suitable to interpret the problems which were raised by the writer. This research used the theory of Liping Ge to analyse the function of existential presupposition. And also used the theory of Denton to analyse the function of slogan.

Abstract

This writer discussed Covid-19 broadcast. The aims of this writer helped societies and increase understanding of lexicons in Covid-19 broadcast. The writer took the data from January 16th till 26th 2021 that is presented by a journalist in CNN Indonesia.com news. This writer took the data from the video and took the script. There were nineteen data to analyze to be lexicons in Covid19. The writer used qualitative descriptive method to explain the existence of a phenomenon that occurs in societies. The writer took qualitative descriptive research using stylistic style analysis because the writer described lexicons in Covid-19 broadcast. This writer analyzed stylistic style of microstructure of discourse proposed by Van Dijk. The stylistic styles data was used when the journalist conveyed lexicons in Covid-19 broadcast. The lexicons on the text gave the explanation of what was a response the societies after they had known about lexicons in Covid-19. The result of this research was to find out lexicons in Covid-19 broadcast. Thus, increasing insight is for the societies. The writer concluded that lexicons in Covid-19 were very beneficial for the societies to avoid or prevent Covid-19.

Abstract

This study is conducted to analyze the syntactic ambiguity in business headlines on the news of The New York Times. This study aimed at explaining: (1) the ambiguity in the tree diagram. (2) The suitability of the headlines with the content of the news in The New York Times. The data source is the online news in The New York Times. The data are collected by (1)Opening the Google Chrome app, (2) Accessing the official website https://nytimes.com, (3) Choosing the column "business", (4) Collecting headlines via copy and paste and screenshotting news content in a word document, (5) Writing the ten data of headlines into the table, (6) Coding the data, while the procedure of data analysis are: (1) Reading the headlines, (2) Drawing the tree diagrams, (3) Describing the meaning, (3) Interpreting the data, (4) Drawing conclusion. In this research, the writer concluded that ambiguous headlines are represented in tree diagrams based on syntax categories, namely parts of speech and phrases. Also, there are nine news headlines that are in accordance with the news content and one headline that is not in accordance with the news content.

Abstract

This study aim to identify the utterances that contain conversational implicature that produce between two characters in Onward movie. In this research the writer analyze the utterances produce by Ian and Barley which contain conversational implicature with the hidden meaning based Grice’s theory. The writer use qualitative method to help while collecting data and analyzing the data. The benefits of used that method in this research is the writer can easily collected the data and analyze the data. The writer use theory from Grice about conversational implicature. The data were collected and analyzed based the maxim and analyze the hidden meaning that produced by Ian and Barley during their conversation in that movie. The result shows that there are fifteen data that contain of conversational implicature found on Onward movie. There are 10 utterances that classified as maxim of quantity, 3 utterances classified as maxim of quality, 1 utterance classified as maxim of manner, and 1 utterance as maxim of relation. The writer also concludes that conversation that occurs in Onward movie contain implied meaning that means Ian, Barley, Bronco, Mom and Ian’s friends always saying the fact, they are answers the question quite informative, relevant with the question and avoid the ambiguity.

Abstract

This research aims to describe the variations of the Rongga language inEast Manggarai, Nusa Tenggara. In this study, found the words in whichused by the Rongga community. They have differences and similarities inspeech, but Rongga language has the same meaning with Waeranalanguage. This occurrence because the location of the both areas is nearso that vocabulary appeared based on different areas in the field lexicon.The research method used in this research is descriptive qualitativemethod and data collection methods using interviews with transcripts andrecording techniques. This research used the theory of dialectology todescribe the variation of Rongga and Waerana language. In this research,found 35 variations of lexicons Rongga and Waerana words.there are 10word verbs, 8 word adjectives, 10 words nouns, 7 words personalpronouns. Therefore, it is very clear that geographical conditions andsocial dialect factors effecting language variations that develop in eachregion.

Abstract

This research is conducted to analyse conceptual metaphor of cancer found in the stories of cancer patients. This research is aimed at explaining: (1) the source domain used to convey cancer, (2) the meaning of conceptual metaphor used by cancer patients to describe their experiences. The researcher uses a descriptive qualitative method. Therefore, this research uses content analysis as the research method. The sources of data are 5 selected stories taken from a Cancer Center Website. The results of this study show that there are three source domains of conceptual metaphors used to convey cancer. The source domains used to convey cancer are journey, blessing, and lesson. The meaning of the conceptual metaphor varies depending on the context and how it is used by the patients. As shown in the results, journey is the most frequently used source domain, with 19 metaphorical expressions, while blessing is the least frequently used source domain, with 7 metaphorical expressions. It is suggested that this research be used as a support or comparison in future research, particularly when discussing conceptual metaphors in communication. Subsequently, this research has benefited cognitive linguistics by identifying conceptual metaphors that exist in one-way communication, in this case, the cancer patients' experiences on a website.

Abstract

This study is conducted to analyze semiotics on meme dealing with skripsi. This study is aimed at explaining the denotative meaning and connotative meaning of each meme of dealing with skripsi. The writer uses a qualitative approach and content analysis as the research method. The sources of data are 5 selected memes taken from internet, such as Instagram, Twitter, Facebook, digital news media and web. The data are collected by searching the meme dealing with skripsi on internet such us Instagram, Facebook, Twitter digital news media and web which contain semiotics, then screenshotting the meme dealing with skripsi, and finally choosing the meme dealing with skripsi to be analyzed, while the procedure of data analysis are first selecting the meme dealing with skripsi that have been collected, then classifying the meme dealing with skripsi, after that describing denotative and connotative meaning of each meme of dealing with skripsi using Roland Barthes’ theory of semiotics and the last is drawing the conclusion. In this research, all meme dealing with skripsi have the denotative and connotative meaning. Most of them are about the difficulties of students in writing skripsi.

Abstract

This study intends to describe five forms of use of deixis by Levinson (1983) in Joe Biden's speech. Aims to determine the types of deixis and interpret the reference meaning of the deixis in Joe Biden's speech. The data used in this study are all taken from the contents of Joe Biden's Speech. The researcher was interested in taking Joe Biden's speech as data because Joe Biden is a world-famous person and a leader of the United States so the contents of his speech will be of interest to the whole world. Data retrieval sources are available in two forms, the first on the official Whitehouse website and the second on YouTube. researchers took data on the Whitehouse website. The research was conducted by applying a qualitative descriptive method in the research. After doing research, as a result, it was found that the five types of deixis, namely person, place, time, discourse, and social deixis were all used in Joe Biden's speech by referring to different objects.

Abstract

The purpose of this study was to find out how high-school students felt about using media platforms for English learning. In this study, Students from SMK Dharma Bahari Surabaya took part. Questionnaires and semi-structured interviews were used as data collection methods in this qualitative study with a case study design. The data from the questionnaire was examined using basic statistical analysis, while the data from the interviews were analyzed using Miles and Huberman's flow model. According to the findings, students in this study use media platforms to learn and improve their English. YouTube is the most popular media platforms platform for learning English, according to them. Furthermore, they indicated that media platforms provide them with English content sources through which they may practice their English abilities, particularly listening, expand their vocabulary, and improve their pronunciation. Furthermore, because media platforms provide a wealth of English content, students can access it whenever and wherever they want. The circumstance provides a stress-free language atmosphere in which students can feel at ease and encouraged to learn English outside of the classroom.

Abstract

This study analyses novel entitled of the novel is “Number” by Rachel Ward. Therefore, the writer is interested to conducting research to know human needs in Rachel Wards Number. By using a psychological approach to analyse psychological problems in Rachel Ward''s novel entitled Number .It is a novel that tells how the psychological aspect of Jem when he knows when someone will die and is related to his love relationship with Spyder who was the accused in the London Eyes bombing, but not Spyder. In this study, the researcher completed the data using a descriptive analysis approach. This qualitative descriptive method was used to analyze and interpret the data, and the information was gathered in the form of words, text, and explanations instead of a number. This approach aims to explain how is human needs Rachel Ward‟s novel “Numbers”In this study, the writer presents data analysis based on five types of Human Needs in Rachel Ward''s novel "Numbers". According to Abraham Maslow''s Hierarchy of Needs, there are five types human needs that is Self Actualization, Esteem, Love/Belonging, Safety, and Physiological. To understand the data collection, Hierarchy of Needs among relationship between Spyder and Jem in the novel most exposed is self actualization which is how big love Jem to Spider and also how love’s Jem to Spyder, the second esteem which is Spyder and Jem try to not hurt their heart each other. They care and respect between them, The third is love/belonging that show they own each other, and The fourth is Safety which expresses for they care for each other. And fifth is physiological that show how they emotion to face their faith.
