Abstract

In today's digital era, there are a number of social media that can be used as a tool to help writing skills for those who learn English. One of the media is "Edmodo". Edmodo is a social networking based learning platform that is intended for teachers, students and parents. In this study, the researcher integrated Process and Genre-Based Approach with Edmodo as a teaching strategy. The participants are the students from the 2nd semester of English Language at Wijaya Putra University to write a paragraph on Edomodo wall based on the topics designed. The procedure for developing the model applied in this study consisted of: planning, implementing, observing, and reflecting. The research found that 70% of the students support to use Edmodo in writing class while 30% of them gave a neutral opinion. Edmodo as an online media supports the effectiveness of teaching learning process proved by the improvement of the students’ writing skill in which their score increase dramatically. The main barriers of the use of Edmodo is incompatibility of their smartphone applications and confusion of using the application.

Abstract

Focusing on single and multiple post-modification of noun phrase complexity in academic writing, this study adopted Berlage’s (2014) types of single and multiple post-modification of noun phrase to investigate the types and distributionof noun phrase on 15 abstracts of accredited local journal and 15 international journal indexed by Scopus. Subjects, objects, and complements are coded manually and then extracted for noun phrases. The findings revealed that both groups of writers heavily relied on noun phrase involving prepositional phrase in single-post modification and noun phrase involving prepositional phrase(s) and coordination(s) in multiple-post modification. This finding may give contribution to EFL teachers and material developers in order to provide information and materials about NP post modifiers that can be used in academic writing.

Abstract

Abstrak Dalam era perkembangan globalisasi banyak masyarakat yang ingin menjadi wirausaha, sehingga banyak orang yang menciptakan usaha-usaha kecil untuk bisa dikerjakan dirumah tapi tetap mendapatkan penghasilan. Pada saat musim pandemi seperti ini bekerja dari rumah atau bisa disebut dengan istilah Work from Home adalah salah satu solusi yang paling efektif. Salah satu usaha rumahan yang sekarang banyak dilirik oleh masyarakat terutama kaum laki-laki adalah budidaya bibit anggur impor. Adapun yang menjadi mitra Program Pemberdayaan Masyarakat (PPM) ini adalah seorang bapak yang bernama Nanang Adianto bekerja sebagai pegawai swasta yang bertempat tinggal di kelurahan Sememi, kecamatan Benowo, yang memiliki hobi dan komunitas peng-Anggur-an dengan spesifikasi pembudidayaan dan pembibitan benih buah anggur impor. Berdasarkan hasil observasi dan wawancara yang dilakukan tim kepada Mitra, bapak Nanang Adianto tersebut mempunyai semangat dan jiwa untuk berwirausaha. Namun, ada 3 hal masalah utama dari budidaya bibit anggur impor adalah 1) produksi dengan pembibitan yang hanya berhasil sekitar 50 %, 2) pengelolaan keuangan yang tidak rapih terutama terkait laba dan rugi karena keuangan masih tercampur dengan kebutuhan pribadi dan 3) manajemen pemasaran hanya sekitar grup anggur saja belum memaksimalkan teknologi informasi. Metode untuk mengatasi permasalahan atau solusi yang ditawarkan pada mitra ada 3 hal, yaitu 1) pelatihan dan pendampingan mengenai produksi terkait teknik dan tatacara budidaya dapat dilakukan dengan ahlinya baik secara langsung, youtube, workshop via zoom dll, 2) pengelolaan keuangan meggunakan aplikasi “BukuKas” karena lebih sederhana dan mudah digunakan sehingga perkembangan usaha dapat terpantau 3) Pemasaran menggunakan media teknologi informasi meliputi sosial media dan E-commerce. Tujuan dari kegiatan ini adalah untuk memperbaiki perekonomian masyarakat khususnya di masa pandemi serta menghasilkan bibit anggur impor yang berkualitas dan variatif dari bibit, batang, dan buahnya mempunyai nilai ekonomis yang cukup tinggi.

Abstract

This research is conducted to analyse conceptual metaphor of cancer found in the stories of cancer patients. This research is aimed at explaining: (1) the source domain used to convey cancer, (2) the meaning of conceptual metaphor used by cancer patients to describe their experiences. The researcher uses a descriptive qualitative method. Therefore, this research uses content analysis as the research method. The sources of data are 5 selected stories taken from a Cancer Center Website. The results of this study show that there are three source domains of conceptual metaphors used to convey cancer. The source domains used to convey cancer are journey, blessing, and lesson. The meaning of the conceptual metaphor varies depending on the context and how it is used by the patients. As shown in the results, journey is the most frequently used source domain, with 19 metaphorical expressions, while blessing is the least frequently used source domain, with 7 metaphorical expressions. It is suggested that this research be used as a support or comparison in future research, particularly when discussing conceptual metaphors in communication. Subsequently, this research has benefited cognitive linguistics by identifying conceptual metaphors that exist in one-way communication, in this case, the cancer patients' experiences on a website.

Abstract

This study is conducted to analyze semiotics on meme dealing with skripsi. This study is aimed at explaining the denotative meaning and connotative meaning of each meme of dealing with skripsi. The writer uses a qualitative approach and content analysis as the research method. The sources of data are 5 selected memes taken from internet, such as Instagram, Twitter, Facebook, digital news media and web. The data are collected by searching the meme dealing with skripsi on internet such us Instagram, Facebook, Twitter digital news media and web which contain semiotics, then screenshotting the meme dealing with skripsi, and finally choosing the meme dealing with skripsi to be analyzed, while the procedure of data analysis are first selecting the meme dealing with skripsi that have been collected, then classifying the meme dealing with skripsi, after that describing denotative and connotative meaning of each meme of dealing with skripsi using Roland Barthes’ theory of semiotics and the last is drawing the conclusion. In this research, all meme dealing with skripsi have the denotative and connotative meaning. Most of them are about the difficulties of students in writing skripsi.

Abstract

Dimasa pandemi sekarang ini masyarakat harus lebih menjaga kesehatan dan salah satu cara yang bisa dilakukan masyarakat adalah dengan mengkonsumsi sayuran organik. Oleh sebab itu kami bekerjasama dengan Mitra yang bernama Harmiyanto, seorang pegawai swasta yang juga berprofesi sebagai petani di dusun Banyu urip Kota Gresik. Dalam kegiatan bertani mitra membudidayakan tanaman sawi hijau dengan pupuk kimia. Dalam Program Pemberdayaan Masyarakat kali ini, kami selaku tim dosen Universitas Wijaya Putra membantu pembudidayaan tanaman sawi hijau (Brassica juncea. L) secara organik dengan mengganti pupuk kimia yang digunakan menjadi pupuk organik metode JADAM. Ada 3 hal masalah utama mitra. Pertama, budidaya tanaman sawi masih menggunakan pupuk kimia; Kedua, masalah manajemen pemasaran; dan Ketiga, pengelolaan keuangan terkait laba dan rugi. Metode yang ditawarkan pada mitra ada 3 hal, Pelatihan dan pendampingan peningkatan produksi budidaya tanaman sawi dengan menggunakan dan memproduksi pupuk organik dengan menggunakan metode JADAM secara mandiri; Pelatihan dan pendampingan dalam hal Pemasaran menggunakan media teknologi informasi meliputi sosial media dan E-commerce; Pelatihan dan pendampingan pengelolaan keuangan meggunakan aplikasi “BukuKas”. Hasil kegiatan dari PPM ini adalah pertama, mitra dapat menghasilkan pupuk dan pestisida organik secara mandiri yaitu pupuk organik kompos (Jadam Microorganism Solution), pupuk organik cair (Jadam Liquid Fertilizer), dan Pestisida organik berupa JWA (Jadam Wetting Agent) dan JS (Jadam Sulfur). Kedua, mitra mempunyai akun facebook dan tokopedia untuk sarana pemasaran online. Ketiga, mitra mempunyai aplikasi “BukuKas” dan mampu mengelola keuangan secara mandiri sehingga perkembangan usaha dapat terpantau. Tujuan dari kegiatan ini adalah untuk memperbaiki perekonomian mitra khususnya di masa pandemi serta menghasilkan tanaman sawi hijau organik yang sangat bermanfaat untuk menjaga kesehatan untuk masyarakat khususnya di masa pandemi. Kata Kunci: Budidaya sawi hijau, Pertanian organik JADAM, aplikasi keuangan, e-commerce.

Abstract

Language features used by BIPA teachers become one of essential parts during online teaching process. This study incorporated interactive metadiscourse (IMD) proposed by Hyland (2005). It was aimed at describing the functions of the categories and understanding the ways teachers employing IMD markers in BIPA digital classes. The data sources were 4 online BIPA learning videos. Aside from employing a qualitative-descriptive method, this study also used documentation technique and content analysis for collecting and analyzing the data through the process of transcribing the video, coding the data, inputting the data in AntCont 3.4.3, selecting the target words, calculating the occurrences and average, interpreting the data, and drawing conclusion. The results of this study revealed that BIPA teachers incorporated all five categories of IMD markers. The most common IMD markers used are: ok, nah, jadi, lihat, coba, dan karena, kalau,and misalnya. The discourse markers mostly assisted the BIPA teachers to direct students, to point on the slides, to shift from one topic to another, and to express agreements.  The findings of this research are expected to give benefits theoretically for scholars and practically for BIPA teachers in conducting online learning.
