Immanuel Kant membangun filsafat kritisnya untuk menjawab pandangan skeptis David Hume mengenai kepastian pengetahuan manusia dan mencoba mendamaikan dua pendekatan yang berbeda terhadap pengetahuan dan tindakan, yakni rasionalisme dan empirisme. Dalam karyanya berjudul Aenesidemus, Gottlob Ernst Schulze mempertanyakan klaim Kant bahwa skeptisisme Hume telah terjawab melalui filsafat kritisnya. Artikel ini pertama-tama membahas teks Aenesidemus dengan memberikan perhatian khusus pada kritik Schulze terhadap pandangan Karl Leonhard Reinhold mengenai ‘fakultas’ representasi dan kegagalan Kant dalam membedakan antara sebab dan syarat pengetahuan. Dalam tanggapannya terhadap karya Schulze ini, Fichte memperlihatkan kesalahpahaman Schulze atas pokok-pokok penting dalam filsafat kritis sekaligus menunjukkan arah filsafat kritis yang hendak ditempuhnya sendiri. Di satu sisi, filsafat kritis memang menuai polemik dengan berbagai kritik dan tanggapan yang mengubah arah filsafat Barat sendiri. Akan tetapi, di sisi lain, seluruh rangkaian peristiwa ini justru memperlihatkan sebuah dialog dalam filsafat sendiri sebagai usaha untuk menemukan fondasi kuat dan mantap atas klaim-klaimnya. Dialog ini menunjukkan keterbukaan filsafat terhadap berbagai bentuk kebenaran yang terus menerus disingkapkan. The Second Vatican Council has its own resonance which has impacted not only the Roman Catholic Church but other Churches also, indeed the world as a whole. This was the conviction of Pope John XXIII when he announced his idea for a Universal Council. He wished to place the Church within the rapidly changing modern world. One change is in attitudes towards other religions which has opened the path towards dialogue. Now, 50 years later, can the council still speak to us about Church renewal and unity? We note progress in Indonesia such as dialogue between religions and religious convictions, the ecumenical movement which has spread, for instance through the acceptance of a common translation of the Bible. Experience of encountering and being together with friends of a number of other religious traditions has contributed to changing the way one thinks, speaks and acts. This occurs only when there is a sincere readiness to open oneself to the other while at the same time acknowledging and appreciating plurality in the human family. In the Christian Church, both Catholic and Protestant, this can be understood as a result of the Second Vatican Council. In the context of Indonesia, and more specifically in Jogyakarta and in NTT Province, ecumenical relations between Catholics and Protestants indicate a desire for renewal (aggiornamento) in our common life. This is clear in collaboration between institutes of higher education, such as studying theology together, the use of a common Bible, acceptance of the deuterokanonika, meditation in common, and so forth. The Second Vatican Council is not just an important moment in the history of the Catholic Church, but for all Christian Churches. The conciliar moment was an integral part of verbum dei, a divine statement, which was not only spoken to the Catholic Church but to the entire Body of Christ, including the Protestant Churches. This essay highlights a number of issues regarding the impact the council has had on the renewal of Protestant Churches, in particular the Protestant Church in Timor (GMIT) including our understanding of the Church’s mission, ecumenical relations, the development of contextual theology, and also about the place and role of women in the Church. Gaudium et Spes is a revolutionary document of Vatican II which can still inspire the Church now and in the future. This document is revolutionary in the sense that it deals with problems, issues and ideas that had never before become the agenda of any Council in the Catholic Church. Gaudium et Spes concretizes what John XXIII named aggiornamento, a process of contextualising the Christian heritage, through which the Church opens itself up to the modern world. This document is also revolutionary because it is entirely a product of the conciliar process of the Council itself. This article presents the process of drafting the document and discusses some issues that are relevant for the Church today and in the future. The reform of the liturgy is to be “marked by the gong of tradition and the spirit of genuine renewal”. This “motto” of liturgical renewal reminds us of the importance of being aware that both tradition and our contemporary situation need to be experienced together in our celebrations. The purpose of the liturgical renewal by the Second Vatican Council, was not renewal for the sake of renewal itself, but rather so that celebrations produced by such reform are meaningful for the active participation of the people of God. To achieve this ideal, judicious considerations need to be taken regarding tradition and contemporary developments. One important fruit of the analysis of the Second Vatican Council is that active participation should become ever wider and deeper in our liturgical celebrations. Participation that is both active and conscious whether physically, together with the whole rich genius of the culture, or spiritually, is a part of the richness of grace for which we should indeed thank God. The presence of Sacrosanctum concilium invites all social levels and classes to participate actively and consciously in sacrificial celebrations and in the Lord’s Supper. To recall the 50th anniversary of the Second Vatican Council, in the first place the author describes the basic texture of the council, namely its spirit of renewal and dialogue and its emphasis upon the church as the people of God. Then follows a brief response to the event itself leading to questions that remain open, mentioning some four groups of issues that were not settled by the council. The next section looks at some limitations in councilar teaching which made implementation difficult in the post-counciliar period. These include the non-awareness of the council participants of the need for legally binding decree, and the way in which, time and again, mutually contradictory statements are placed side by side in the documents without any attempt to relate the two contrary directions implied. By making use of these two weaknesses, the Roman Curia in particular has tried to neutralise a number of reforms, among others, by recentralising the decision making processes of the Catholic Church. One challenge we face 50 years after the council was openned, is to implement the principle of subsidiarity as well and as intensive as possible, and to recall the most fundamental principle in the Catholic Church, namely that each one must follow their conscience. Therefore, in openness to the gospel and conscious of the signs of the times, the struggle for renewal should take place in constructive non-obedience to efforts for restoration being undertaken in a number of quarters.
