Abstract

The objective of this research is to improve students’ achievement in writing descriptive through collaborative writing. This research was conducted at SMP Negeri 28 Medan academic year 2018-2019 as the subject of researcher. The subject of this research consisted of 35 students of the eighth grade. The research was conducted with classroom action research. The research was conducted by dividing into two cycles with 6 meeting for each. The sources of data were qualitative and quantitative. The qualitative data were collected by observation sheets, questionnaires and diary notes. Quantitative data were taken from tests, carried out at the end of every cycle. Based on the result of the data analysis there was an improvement of the result of the students’ achievement in writing descriptive text from each cycle. After doing test on cycle I, there was an improvement of the result of the students’ mean was 72.8 with 24 students who got successful score criteria above 70 or it was 69 % and 11 students who got unsuccessful score criteria above 70 or it was 31 %. Then, an improvement was done in second cycle after reflection in the first cycle, there was an improvement of students’ mean was 77.9 with 31 students who got successful score criteria above 70 or it was 89 % and 4 students who got unsuccessful score criteria above 70 or it was 11 %. In other words, the students’ achievement at writing descriptive text was improved. And based on questionnaire sheets, observation sheets, diary notes, and documentation, it showed that the expression and excitement of the students were also improved.

Abstract

This study deals with the Theme and Rheme in Peterpan novel. The objective of this study was to find out the kinds and the dominant kind of Theme and Rheme in Peterpan novel. This study was conducted by applying descriptive qualitative research design. The data of this study were taken from Peterpan novel chapter I until chapter XVII. It was found that there were 6 kinds of Theme and Rheme in this study, namely: Simple Theme was 11 clauses or 16.41%, Multiple Theme was 9 clauses or 13.43%, Unmarked Simple Theme was 17 clauses or 25.37%, Unmarked Multiple Theme was 18 clauses or 26.86%, Marked Simple Theme was 2 clauses or 2.98%, and Marked Multiple Theme was 10 clauses or 14.92%. It meant that Unmarked Multiple Theme was the dominant kind in this study because Unmarked Multiple Theme was easier to search in each clause and can be understood by the readers.

Abstract

This research was focused only to find metaphor in “A Walk To Remember” novel. The research was conducted by using descriptive qualitative method. The data were collected from chapter 1 until chapter 6 of the novel. The finding of the research showed that there were 50 lines of metaphor which were classified into three types of metaphor, namely structural metaphor (36), orientational metaphor (9), and ontological metaphor (5). The most dominant type of metaphor used in the novel was structural metaphor (36). It means that the point of the novel was a description of imaginary art work of the author as if the events in the novel were literally true and really happening. In addition, the novel itself was a metaphor that providing structure and analogy to real world.

Abstract

This research was to analyze the students’ grammar errors on the use of present tense and past tense in translating Indonesian sentence into English. The aims were to find out what errors were made by the students and what error was the dominant one. The method used was descriptive qualitative. It was conducted at SMP Swasta Dwitunggal Tanjung Morawa in academic year 2018 – 2019. The population was the students of the eighth grade consisted of 3 classes with the total number of population was 138. The sample was the class VIII-3 consisted of 41 students which was obtained through cluster random sampling with lottery technique. The instrument used was a translation test which consisted of 20 items of Indonesian sentence. Through the data analysis, it was obtained that there were four types of errors made by the eighth grade students, namely error of omission (17.22%), error of addition (32.05%), error of miss-formation (34.44%), and error of miss-ordering (12.91%). The most dominant error was error of miss-formation.

Abstract

This research dealt with the analysis of students’ error in translating English narrative text “Story of Lake Toba” into Indonesian. The objective of the research was to find out the types of error and the dominant type of error made by the students in translating the narrative text. The population was all the students of grade X at SMA Teladan Sei Rampah academic year 2018-2019 with the total number students was 40. There were two parallel classes, namely X-IPA2 and X-IPA3. Each class consisted of 20 students. By applying cluster random sampling technique, X-IPA2 was selected to be the sample. The instrument of the research was written test in the form of essay test which was divided into 20 questions in translating. The total errors found was 65 occurrences which was consisted of error of omission = 10 (15.38%), error of addition = 13 (20%), error of misordering = 36 (55.38%), and error of misinformation = 6 (9.23%). Abstract

This study was conducted by using descriptive qualitative design. The objective of this study was to find out the students’ ability in identifying nominal and verbal sentences. The subject of the research was of grade VIII at SMP Teladan Sei Rampah academic year 2018-2019. The total number the subject was 20 students. To obtain data, a grammar test was administered to the students. After the data had been analyzed, it was found that the students were able to identify nominal and verbal sentences in English. Thus, it was concluded that the students’ of grade VIII at SMP Teladan Sei Rampah academic year 2018-2019 were able to identify nominal and verbal sentences in English.

Abstract

This journal discussed the correlation between students’ motivation and their achievement score in English learning for grade VIII students at SMP Teladan Sei Rampah. This study was conducted by using descriptive quantitative research design. The instrument for the data collection was questioner. The population of this study was 20 students. The result of data processing the correlation coefficient number was 0.723 and it was included in the strong category. Thus, it can be concluded that there was a correlation between students’ motivation and learning outcome in English grammar of the grade VIII students and this correlation was positive.

Abstract

This research aimed to find out the effect of Think Talk Write (TTW) Strategy on students’ ability in writing descriptive text. The research was conducted by using experimental research design. The population was the students of grade X consisting of 60 students. The sample was selected by applying cluster random sampling technique. The sample was divided into two groups namely experimental and control groups. Class X-iis consisting of 30 students was the experimental group taught by using Think Talk Write (TTW) Strategy. Class X-mia consisting of 30 students was the control group taught by conventional strategy. The instrument used to collect the data was writing test. The result of the data analysis by applying t-test formula showed that t-obs value was higher than t-table value (t-obs > t-table = 3.747 > 2.660). Based on the finding, Ha was accepted and Ho was rejected. Thus, Think Talk Write (TTW) Strategy significantly affected the students’ ability in writing descriptive text.

Abstract

This study dealt with persuasive strategies in @1000tenda Instagram Post. The objectives of this study were to describe and to find out the dominant technique and strategies of persuasive used in @1000Tenda Instagram Post. This study was conducted by applying descriptive qualitative design. The data were collected from @1000tenda Instagram Post. After the data analyzed, it was found out 6 types of persuasive techniques and 3 types of persuasive strategies used in @1000tenda Instagram Post. The most dominant persuasive techniques used was suggestion and the most dominant persuasive strategies used was phatos.

Abstract

The aims of this study were to find out the types and the dominant type of translation shift on verb phrases used in English-Indonesian translation of Surah Yaseen (Chapter 36). This study was conducted by using descriptive qualitative method. The data were the verb phrases in English-Indonesian translation of Surah Yaseen. The data were collected and analyzed by comparing, classifying, categorizing, describing, calculating, and displaying by using table. The result of this study found there were three types of translation shift on verb phrases in English-Indonesian translation of Surah Yaseen namely: class shift (51.25%), level shift (43.75%), and structure shift (5%). The most dominant type of translation shift used was the class shift.
