Abstract

This research aims to determine the implementation of extensive reading in teaching reading comprehension as well as to determine students’ perceptions of the use of extensive reading in teaching reading comprehension. In this study, the researcher used a qualitative case study design where the source of the research data was class IX of SMPN 1 Pangale, from the 25 students in class IX, the researcher took 5 students’ to be interviewed in the research sample using random sampling. The researcher collected data using observation and interview instruments. Observations were made to find out the formulation of the problem regarding the implementation of extensive reading in teaching reading comprehension. Whereas, the interview was conducted to determine the formulation of theproblem regarding students’ perceptions of the use of extensive reading in teaching reading comprehension. After achieving this research, the researcher concluded that the implementation of extensive reading in teaching reading comprehension has a good effect on the students’ reading comprehension. It could be seen from the steps or methods taken such as the teacher starting with greetings, praying, checking the attendance list, and conveying an outline of the scope of the material. Then the teacher gave a text according to the students’ abilities and desires such as narrative text. Next, asked students to read the text and then asked students to find out the extent of students reading comprehension. As it is known that many students were active when answering the questions of the English text. After that, the teaching-learning process ended by concluding and giving assignments to students. While the results of interviews of the students’ perceptions regarding the used of extensive reading in teaching reading comprehension have a good effect because most class IX students of SMPN 1 Pangale enjoy the learning-teaching process. This could be seen from the results of the interviews: First, most of the students agreed that extensive reading was effective to be applied in teaching reading comprehension. Second, increase students’ interest in reading and increase students’ knowledge of vocabulary. Third, extensive reading could increase students’ motivation to reading. Abstract

The purposes of this study were to determine the types of errors that Senior High School students make in pronouncing words silent letters and the causes that influence students to make errors in pronouncing words containing silent letters. The approach used in this research was qualitative descriptive. The research subject chosen by using purposive sampling technique were class XI students at SMA Negeri 1 Campalagian in the 2022/2023 academic year. The data were collected by test and interview, then analyzed it by using analytical technique of Miles and Huberman, namely by reducing data, displaying data and drawing conclusion/verification. The results of this study indicated that the types of errors made by students in pronouncing words containing silent letters exist two, Pre-systematic errors and Systematic errors. The results of this study also showed that the causes that influence students in made errors were the lack of experience of students in learning English, pronunciation viewed as one of difficult subject, influenced by the mother tongue and students learning model. From the results of this study, it can be concluded that there are still many students who made errors in pronouncing words that contain silent letters and do not understand how to pronounce the sounds of these words correctly. Abstract

This research aimed at developing Insurance and Budgeting Organization English Material for students of Management Department at STIE YPUP, Makassar. The research design used in this study was Research and Development (R&D). The development model used was ISD model. It consisted of three phases: needs analysis, instructional design, implementation, and evaluation. T Types of data obtained in this study were quantitative and qualitative data. The instruments used in this research were questionnaire and observation sheet for two experts. In this research, two experts were involved in order to validate the product. There were three systematic aspects that they validated of the product: Materials Systematic Organization, Systematic English Teaching and Systematic Content of English. The development of English materials includes conceptual map, goals, materials sequence, English material and worksheet, and additional task. The product was tried out to the first semester of students of management department at STIE YPUP. Therefore, the result indicated that based on the experts’ judgment as well as try-out design result, the developed ELT materials were applicable to be taught at the first semester of students of management department as topics in English for them.

Abstract

This study aims to prove the difference in talk dominance between the male group and the female group in English Education Department batch 2019 at UIN Alauddin Makassar.Moreover, this study was conducted to know the factors that cause the occurrence of talk dominance in the English Education Department batch 2019 at UIN Alauddin Makassar. This study used a qualitative descriptive design to prove whether there is talk dominance between the male group and the female group in the English Education Department batch 2019 at UIN Alauddin Makassar,. The data were taken from classroom observations via Zoom application when the students were discussing. The data were analyzed based on the theory of Kaharuddin and Ismail (2017:146) in which there were four stages: collection, identification, classification, and explanation. To find out the factors that led to the talk dominance, the researcher made questions on Google form and distributed them to 42 students of the English Education Department batch 2019 at UIN Alauddin Makassar. The result showed that there were 88 sentences produced by the students (male and female). There were 25 sentences produced by the male group and 63 by the female group. There it can be concluded that women's groups dominated the discussion. Furthermore, the factors for the occurrence of talk dominance were; intelligence factors, learning motivation factors, learning strategy factors, learning facilities, teacher responses, and the influence of friends. Abstract

The objective of this research was to find out the level effectiveness of using Story Pyramid Strategy to the reading comprehension advancement. The quasi-experimental method research design is used to carry out this research. There are experimental and control class. The experimental class consists of 20 students and the controlled class consists of 20 students. The Story Pyramid Strategy was applied in the experimental class as a treatment to train students in reading narrative text. The instrument used in this research is a test in multiple choices. The researchers used a pre-test as an instrument before conducting the treatment of Story Pyramid Strategy and a post-test as an instrument after conducting the treatment of Story Pyramid Strategy. The result of this research after conducting the treatment of Story Pyramid Strategy in the experimental class shows there was an advancement in students’ reading comprehension in reading narrative text. The Story Pyramid Strategy enables the students summarize the most important parts of text and got the detail and specific information. Story Pyramid also made students more active and creative in learning process. The researcher found that the use of story pyramid strategy to help the students understand the text and got the detail and specific information especially in narrative text.
