Abstract

The purpose of the study are; (1) to find out the human values in Hancock’s The Blind Side movie, and (2) To find out which human values in Hancock’s The Blind Side movie reflected to character building in indonesia. The descriptive qualitative design was used in this study to make a clear explanation about human values reflect in this movie. The main isntruments such as script and video file of the movie. And also, flow model method by Miles and Huberman was used in this study to analyze the data. The results of this study were: (1) in the script of this movie reflected there only five kinds of human values aspects reflected in this movie. They are individual values, family values, professional value, moral values and spiritual values. Researcher found that there are four kinds of individual value, eight kinds in family values, one kind of professional value, six kinds of moral values, and one kind of spiritual values. (2) from those five human values aspects, and only five values that refer to character building in Indonesia are honesty, tolerance, hard work, love peace and social care. Meanwhile, character building honesty, tolerance and hard work found in family values. Character building love peace and social care found in moral values

Abstract

The study intended to find out students’ difficulties and the factors influencing learning poetry. The researcher tried to find the difficulties that affected the students at the Faculty of Cultural Science Mulawarman University during the learning process. The student's difficulties in learning caused by many factors, such as the facility as assisted learning, the materials or textbook, teaching methods, learning resources, and from the students themselves. The design of this study was descriptive quantitative. It conducted to determine the value of independent variables without making a comparison with other variables. The population of the study was English literature students in the academic year 2017/2018. The researcher took 50 students from the population as samples in this study. The data of this study were collected by using the checklist questionnaire and interview. Based on the result of this study, it was found that the students were having difficulties in understanding the figurative languages, analyzing the words and elements, interpreting the meaning of the poem, reciting and writing the poem. The difficulties were faced by the students in learning poetry influenced by several factors. They were the difficulties in students’ literary competence (23%), teaching methods (21%), students’ references (20%), learning resources (19%), and the learning materials or textbooks (17%). To summarize this study appeared to claim that the English literature students were having difficulties and influenced by several factors in learning poetry. This study intended to examine the difficulties and the factors that influenced the students as a consideration to determine an effective teaching and learning poetry.

Abstract

Watching movie, especially English movie is very useful for students who are learning English because not only as something enjoyable and entertainment, but also as a motivation for learning English. The purpose of this research was to find out whether there is any significant effect of using English movie in teaching simple present tense to seventh grade student of SMP Plus Melati Samarinda or not. The design of this study was pre-experimental design consisting of one group pre-test and post-test by selecting 23 students as sample. The research instrument was simple present test in multiple choice forms. In analyzing the data, the researcher used the Mean score and the paired sample t-test by using program SPSS 0.21. The t-test was used to measure the hypotheses testing. The findings of this research showed that (1) the total score of pre-test was 1216 with mean score 52.87 which was categorized as poor (2) the total score of Posttest was 1488 with mean score 64.70 which was categorized as fair. From the result of the pre-test and posttest we can see that there was significant difference between teaching simple present before and after using English movie as a media. (3) From the Hypotheses Testing of Paired sample T-test using SPSS program, it showed that the value sig. (2-tailed) < α or 0.000 < 0.05. The value sig. (2-taliled) was higher than the value of 0.05. It means that the Null Hypothesis (Ho) was rejected and the Alternative Hypotheses (Ha) was accepted. It means that there was a significant effect of using English movie in teaching simple present tense to seventh grade students of SMP Plus Melati Samarinda. Based on the result of this research, it can be inferred that there was a significant effect of using English movie in teaching simple present tense.

Abstract

This study analyzed the characterization and idiosyncrasy in Ernest Hemingway’s selected short stories. The researcher chooses Ernest Hemingway’s selected short stories because of its famous literary works that makes the researcher interested to know the story is about. The purpose of this study are to find out the types of characterization and the idiosyncrasy used in Ernest Hemingway’s selected short stories. This study used content analysis approach by Elo and Kyngas (2007), Kirscbaum’s theory of characterization and theory of stylistic and idiosyncrasy by Leech and Short (2007). Besides, the researcher also used other theories such as, Abid, Denzin & Lincoln, Miles & Huberman, Mack, et al, Reams to support the concepts. The data were collected by identifying 10 Ernest Hemingway’s selected short stories that contain types of characterization and then found the idiosyncrasy in Ernest Hemingways selected short stories. The findings of this study shows Ernest Hemingway used indirect characterization to present the characters in the stories. There are 27 quotations of 10 selected short stories that shows it. The researcher also had found the idiosyncrasy through stylistic concept of Ernest Hemingway. There are structural and lexical points. The researcher found ‘it was’ to stress the object pronoun and ‘there’ to stress the subject that included in structural point. The researcher also found ‘and’ to start the sentences, an animal to represent the main problem, and verbal irony as his figure of speech. In this study, the suggestions are directed to the students in the English Department, who are interested in the literary study, particularly of the characterization and the idiosyncrasy in the short stories. This research can be a source to support the study of literature such as characterization, the idiosyncrasy, Ernest Hemingway, and to conduct research in the same field.

Abstract

Textbooks are a kind of resource that is often used in the teaching and learning processes in schools by instructors and students. In EFL English textbooks, gender equality becomes a sign of gender discrimination. Consequently, this study assessed the extent to which both sexes were portrayed equally in junior high school English textbooks. The goal of this study is to ascertain how gender is portrayed in EFL textbooks in terms of family responsibilities and employment. To establish the gendering of their dialogues in EFL textbooks. To define the EFL textbook's qualities as determined by junior high schools. To answer the research question, the content analysis method is applied in this research. Each page of the EFL textbook was analyzed to find six aspects. These aspects consist of the six aspects analyzed in the textbook are pictures of women or men, women or men mentioned, roles, games, models, and names of men or boy. The result of this study indicate that in representing gender roles in the EFL textbook “When English Rings a Bell”, the researcher found the results of the overall analysis of the number of female roles more than male roles, namely for the pictures mentioned of gender names, occupation roles, roles domestic, predominantly female play, the roles models conveyed al lead to female characters as seen in the EFL English textbook “When English Rings A Bell”. After conducting the analysis, it can be concluded that the EFL English Textbook contains different levels of gender bias in the exercises in each chapter. Men are dominant in two categories, namely work, and activities. Meanwhile, women only have a dominant number in the visibility category. Overall, textbook authors have tried to promote gender equality in textbooks. Men are still dominant in textbooks. The textbooks in this study still contain issues of gender bias. So it is hoped that it can be revised so that gender representation in all textbooks will be represented equally

Abstract

In English language learning, textbooks play a crucial role since they provide knowledge about the English language and interrelated cultures. In Indonesia, the majority of schools are using textbooks which published by the Ministry of Education and Culture of Indonesia. Therefore, this study aimed to find how the English textbooks for high school represent Indonesian cultural diversity and how does the teacher perceived Indonesian cultural diversity presented in English textbooks. Those three English textbooks were published by the Ministry of Education and Culture of Indonesia. The design of this study was qualitative study that attempted to reveal the cultural categories in English textbooks. According to Yuen (2011) there are four cultural categories, Product, Person, Practice, and Perspective. In order to answer questions of the study, the researcher did content analysis. Regarding to cultural categories, this study found that in English textbook for 10th grade, Product dominated the cultural content with 50% or 78 appearances. Then, in English textbook for 11th, Person was the cultural categories that appeared most with 58% or 25 appearances. Lastly, English textbook for 12th grade also presented Person as the most cultural categories that appeared with 57% or 54 appearances. On the subject of perception of teacher toward Indonesian cultural diversity presented in English textbooks, this study also found that the teacher thought the cultural content in English textbook which published by the Ministry of Education and Culture of Indonesia still not enough to represent all Indonesian cultures. However, she agreed that those content are educated enough for the students

Abstract

This study analyzes the types and functions used by Boris Johnson in his speech about COVID-19 pandemic. In education, this can help students to learn how to express something in English. The researcher uses five speeches that was conducted by Boris Johnson from 23 March 2020 to 31 October 2020. The researcher uses content analysis method on qualitative approach to describe and analyze the illocutionary act performed by Boris Johnson and then classifies them according to Searle’s theory of illocutionary act. The result is that Boris has performed 160 representatives illocutionary act, 48 directives, 54 comissives, 49 expressives, and 14 declaratives. As for the illocutionary act performed by Boris, he has performed 158 collaborative function, 118 convivial function, 46 competitive, and just 2 conflictive.

Abstract

Class Struggle in Bong Joon-ho’s Film Parasite: An Analysis by Using Marxist Theory. Class struggle is the continual conflict between the capitalist and working classes for economic and political power. In this study, the researcher will analyze the class struggle in Bong Joon-ho’s film Parasite by using Marxist theory. This study will be using descriptive qualitative research as its design. The purposes of this study are: 1) to find out the portrayal of social condition of the lower class in Bong Joon-ho’s film Parasite; 2) to find out the classification of social class in Bong Joonho’s film Parasite; 3) to find out the impacts of the class struggle toward the upper class and lower class in Bong Joon-ho’s film Parasite; 4) to find out if there is any specific behavior that the upper class frequently do to the lower class in the Bong Joon-ho’s film Parasite. The data in this study will be analyzed by using Miles and Huberman’s theory, which consists of three flows of activity: data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing/verification. The result of this study shows that Bong Joon-ho’s film Parasite portrays the social condition of the lower class as the working class for the proletariat. In this film, the classification of social class is divided into two classes: the lower class, which is the Kim family and the upper class, which is the Park family. The impacts of class struggle that happened in this film are the Kim family’s jealousy and desire to infiltrate and creep into the Park family’s house, which resulted greed and violence. There is also a specific behaviorthat the upper class frequently do to the lower class in this film, which is the upper class’ act of being annoyed by the lower class’ smell.

Abstract

This study investigates linguistic impoliteness found in Joe Biden’s Instagram comment section through the analysis of impoliteness strategies proposed by Jonathan Culpeper. The present study aims at examining the types of impoliteness strategies used by commenters in Joe Biden Instagram comment section. The study uses descriptive qualitative method. The data gathered by using documentary technique, in which only the data that support research question are taken. Findings showed that there are four out five types of impoliteness strategies that used by commenters in Joe Biden’s Instagram comment section. Furthermore, there were some functions of impoliteness that the researcher found; coercive impoliteness, affective impoliteness, and entertaining impoliteness. The result showed that the commenter demonstrated the expression of wrath and dissapointment. The advantages of using online communication and ability to exercise their power eventhough they were in a lower social status also contributed to the emergence of impolite act. But, the lack of feedback from the target regarding the impolite comment on his Instagram post make this study less detailed. In short, it is recommended to investigate more comprehensively the impoliteness strategies in a case where the target showed clear response toward the impoliteness act

Abstract

Motivation is an important element in learning, especially in writing. It can affect the achievement of learning. This study is conducted to analyze the correlation between students’ motivation and achievement in writing. The purposes of this study are : (1) to find out the level of writing motivation of the sixth semester students of English Department of Mulawarman University. (2) to find out the level of writing achievement of the sixth semester students of English Department of Mulawarman University. (3) to find out whether there is a correlation between writing motivation and writing achievement of the sixth semester students of English Department of Mulawarman University. The researcher utilized a correlational design in this study. The population of this study was taken from the sixth semester students of English Department, whereas this study used 25 students as the sample. The instruments of this study were Academic Writing Motivation Questionnaire and score documentation of Writing. This study used an analysis of Pearson Product Moment correlation to find out the result of hypotheses. There were three result of this study. First, based on the calculation of Academic Writing Motivation questionnaire, it was shown that the level of writing motivation of the sixth semester students of English Department of Mulawarman University was in low category. Second, the analysis of writing score documentation shown that the level of students’ writing achievement of the sixth semester of English Department of Mulawarman University was in low category. Third, based on the data ofwriting motivation and writing achievement, it was shown that r value is .902 with a significance value of .000 < 0.05, so Ho is rejected and Ha is accepted. It was assumed that writing motivation and writing achievement have a relationship.
