Abstract

The changing times due to modernization are affecting people's lives. The amount of information about promiscuous sexual behavior that enters society without social control causes many teenagers to engage in promiscuity, resulting in pregnancies out of wedlock. This often forces them to marry or get Married By Accident. The aim of this research is to find out how families respond to marriages outside of marriage or marriages by accident. The method used in this research is qualitative research with a descriptive approach. Data was obtained through observation, interviews, and documentation. The sampling technique used was purposive sampling. The criteria for informants in this study were teenagers and parents who had accidentally married. The data analysis techniques used in this research are data reduction, data presentation, and drawing conclusions. The results of the research show that there has been a social change in the Simpang Village community. The family's response to getting married accidentally was characterized by anger, disappointment, sadness, and shame due to the family's disgrace. Therefore, the marriage was carried out to remove the shame and responsibility of the man who had impregnated the woman. Social change in the Simpang Village community has led to social functions and dysfunctions. Latent functions are considered as hidden and unexpected functions, and manifest functions are considered as real or expected functions. Marriage by accident has latent or hidden functions, namely eliminating shame, covering family disgrace, preventing slander, and being responsible for the man who has impregnated the woman. Meanwhile, dysfunction is due to social changes caused by marriages due to accidents, such as getting pregnant out of wedlock, which is a family disgrace and has become a taboo thing that has become commonplace in society.

Abstract

McDonaldization is a paradigm that occurs in modern society, shifting from formal rationality to an interest in practicality due to its perceived efficiency. In this context, McDonaldization in education promotes practical elements through the principles of McDonaldization, which are efficiency, predictability, quantification, and control (technology). This study aims to identify the McDonaldization of higher education through the behavior of thesis jockeys in the city of Tanjungpinang. The method used is a descriptive-qualitative approach that examines aspects of the McDonaldization of higher education in the behavior of thesis jockeys in Tanjungpinang, using the snowball technique with seven informants, including jockey service providers, student jockey service users, non-user students, and lecturers. The theoretical foundation used is Postmodern Theory (McDonaldization) by George Ritzer. The study results reveal that the efficiency aspect is the primary reason for Tanjungpinang city students to choose jockey services. In conclusion, the McDonaldization theory is applicable to higher education and influences the behavior of thesis jockeys in Tanjungpinang.

Abstract

The Post-Bauxite Mining Industry in Tembeling-Tanjung Village is managed by an ex-mining tradition, which is a copyrighted and human work of material objects, beliefs, delusions, events, or institutions inherited from one generation to the next, such as customs, arts, and property. This tradition is experienced by every member of the community as something that survives within a certain time. In this era, many traditions are still preserved in generations from ancestors to children and grandchildren in a society. Among the traditions still carried out and maintained by the people of Laboh Village, Senayang District, is the Pasang Bagan/Kelong tradition. This research aims to find out how the tradition of installing bagan/kelong in Laboh Village, Senayang District, Lingga Regency is carried out. The study uses a qualitative descriptive approach with primary data sources from interviews with informants, including traditional leaders, bagang handlers, and the implementing community, using purposive sampling technique. Data collection techniques include observation, interviews, and documentation. Based on the results, it can be seen how the tradition of installing bagan is carried out, where people who want to set up the bagan must ask the handler of the bagan for water and report it. During the process of setting up the bagan, the spell water that has been requested from the bagan handler must be cast on the old stake or the first stake to be caked. Media such as spell water from the bagan handler is an essential requirement in constructing bagan/kelong.

Abstract

The purpose of this research is to specifically describe the social status of the police profession by studying the meaning that the Batak tribe family associates with the police profession in Sungai Langkai Village, Batam City. The theory used in this study is the theory of Symbolic Interactionism by Herbert Blumer. This theory rests on three premises: a) Humans act based on the meanings that things have for them, b) These meanings come from a person's social interaction with others, and c) These meanings are refined during the process of social interaction. In this study, researchers used qualitative methods with a descriptive approach. Data collection was carried out using observation, interviews, and documentation methods. The technique of determining informants was purposive sampling with informant criteria, namely families and sons who work as police officers in Sungai Langkai Village, Batam City, and the number of informants in this study is 10. The data analysis techniques included data reduction, data presentation, and conclusion drawing. The results of this study show that the meaning of the police profession in Batak families is multi-faceted. Firstly, it is seen as a way of continuing the clan. Secondly, it increases the social status of the police officer in the family. Thirdly, it enhances personal integrity in the family. Fourthly, it provides a source of income/salary. Fifthly, the profession serves as a role model in the family. The meaning of the police profession in the Batak family is rooted in the belief that the son who becomes a police officer will continue the clan and carry the family's good name at family events. This meaning is reflected in the profession chosen by the family members who work as police officers.

Abstract

The main problem of this research is to find out the meaning of coins for the people in Tarempa Village, Anambas Regency. In trading activities that occur in people's daily lives, the use of money is the most important thing. For most members of the community, money in any form will be valued and accepted in buying and selling transactions. However, this does not apply to the people of Anambas Regency, including those in Tarempa Village, as they refuse to use coins in their transactions. This study used a qualitative descriptive approach and collected data through interviews, observation, and documentation. The informants were selected using purposive sampling technique based on predetermined criteria. The data obtained were analyzed and conclusions were drawn. The results of the study indicate that people in Tarempa Village interpret coins as a form of money that is worthless, and therefore have no value in everyday transactions. Based on the theory of symbolic interactionism, this meaning can arise because of the exchange of symbols that occur. This act of refusal is the community's response to the given stimulus based on their habit.

Abstract

This study investigates the phenomenon of make-up Sales Promotion Girls (SPGs) in Tanjungpinang City, Riau Islands. These SPGs are commonly found in supermarkets, shops, and crowded areas, promoting various make-up brands. In this current trend, SPGs no longer work alone but instead rely on intermediaries, such as fellow SPGs and friends, to expand their merchandise and reach their sales targets. They collect customers' mobile numbers to promote new products via WhatsApp and distribute brochures while explaining the benefits of their products and offering special discounts. This qualitative descriptive research employed the theory of Fukuyama (2002) and used five informants to investigate the social network of SPGs in Tanjungpinang. The study found that SPGs formed a social network based on family lines, friendships, and fellow SPGs. This network initially served as an economic network and later expanded into a social network, where members cooperate to achieve mutual benefits. The existence of social networks in economic life creates behavioral attachments in interactions or social relations. The informants' values served as rules that must be obeyed to achieve cooperation within the community.

Abstract

This study focuses on the issue of child stunting in Pinang Kencana Village, East Tanjungpinang, Indonesia. One of the main causes of stunting is improper parenting due to a lack of knowledge regarding children's health patterns and weak parenting practices. In addition, there is a lack of supervision from health authorities which results in ineffective handling of stunting cases. The study employs a descriptive qualitative research method and uses Peter L. Berger and Thomas Luckman's theories to understand the social constructs surrounding stunting. The findings suggest that continuous efforts are needed to interpret and cultivate meaning in order to address the issue of stunting.

Abstract

Land conflicts are often encountered in both urban and rural areas, accompanied by their diversity. For example, conflicts between the community and developers from a private company with the initials PT NSA, as well as local governments who participate in supporting the road function conversion that occurred in Sungai Langkai Sub-district, RT002/RW007, Batam City. The land problem resulted in changes in road access function that did not comply with the site plan in that area. This conversion led the community to take various rejection actions to maintain the function of the roadside in accordance with the established land rules for the comfort of their living environment. This study aims to determine the demands made by the community to maintain the function of the roadside. The data collection techniques used in this study were structured interviews, participant observation, and documentation. The sampling technique used was purposive sampling. This study uses Lewis Alfred Coser's theory which views conflicts not only as negative but also positive. The findings of this study describe negative impacts. In addition, conflicts also have positive impacts on community groups in carrying out their demands, such as building stronger solidarity by holding meetings to determine the strategies to be taken and the spirit of the residents to help each other, whether in the form of money, time, or transportation.
